Topic: Tuning for Ballad of John Henry?

I know Joe uses a baritone on that, but what tuning is it? In terms of standard tuning, is a perfect fifth (A), a perfect fourth (B), a major third (C), or an octave lower on that track?

Possibly this tuning...

High String to Low String

C#
G#
E
B
F#
B

I Found this tuning in a Guitar Pro transcription that was www.ultimate-guitar.com

Re: Tuning for Ballad of John Henry?

Tune the low string to B and then tune it like a standard from there. So your E strings will be B strings and so on and so forth.

So a fourth? Got it. I'll try it.

Ha, no wonder it sounds so off when I play it.

Does that mean cmadragon's tuning above is wrong?

Re: Tuning for Ballad of John Henry?

Most live versions are in C.      Not B as the Studio version. Ive tuned various standard guitars down to B and C to play BJH but the strings are too slack to get a good clean sound,  And pretty much all the net tabs are terrible !

You said it! I always learn a song by ear, then maybe watch a few videos and am a bit surprised if I see them play it a different way. At least I have the base down and can only move forward from there.
It is essential to train the ear and this is a great, fun way to do it - almost without thinking....say if you jam along with your favourite songs - I just do it with Zep all the time (live stuff) - I have fun and realise after a while how much I have learnt.

Many tabbers (our friend on here, exempt of course) are kids or people who seemingly have immense difficultly in transposing pieces.

At very least - you must check many different sources for one song including a few youtubes - play it yourself and /hear/ if it sounds correct.

Re: Tuning for Ballad of John Henry?

Oh, I have the song down. I can play it in standard tuning, although it's a little different. I just wanted to know what the tuning was, and just mess around with it. Figured it might beef up the sound a little. smile

That's why Joe's bought a cool baritone guitar!

Id of never guessed that !

Re: Tuning for Ballad of John Henry?

Unless the couple of tabs on Ultimate Guitar are (semi-)accurate, is there any chance I can convince someone to tab out the opening riff for me? I don't have Guitar Pro. sad
