He uses a 1971 Marhall 50w with 2x 12 cab and a Fender reverb tank (superior to digital reverb IMHO, but what do I know!!), the 335 is rarely used. he normally uses a 1958 historic black Gibson with Bigsby. The 335 was used as a nod to 9 Below Zero who they were supporting. Lots of people comment on the 335s big sound though.

I too loved the tone of that 335, very cool....covering JB is the ultimate....I'd like to hear what JB would say about the video

It's pretty good.
However, I think it's important to give credit where credit is due. I think it's a bit misleading to simply say Joe Bonamassa's Had To Cry Today/Starship Trooper, IMHO.

Yes Martin - its a great cover of Joe's version, but how is Virgil going to make it his own? We have been having an interesting discussion on the Aynsley Lister forum about covers and the concensus seems to be that you need to make covers your own, as Joe does. I totally agree, like most up and comings Virgils influences are very obvious, remember he is only 17. They do have original tracks, the point of this cover is show he does it well, its not an easy one to do. When your starting out you need to play stuff that catches the audiences attention quickly. Time is on their side, own style takes a while and cannot be just switched on. Tom in particular is a very good songwriter. You will see this very soon

At Virgil's age, I'm sure what he is doing is right. From what I've seen he's playing covers from a variety of artists, and that goes a long way to his education (learning the history of the blues - who played what, and picking it all apart so he can play the songs himself). Mastering the Masters styles is the first step to developing your own (style). Virgil seems to have an insatiable appetite for playing all styles of blues just now, and certain influences will undoubtedly rub off and play a part in the development of his own unique style. I doubt you could name a blues guitarist gigging today who hasn't been through that process. It's obvious at the moment that he just loves going out on stage and tearing it up. It's great that he has the confidence to do that having only just turned seventeen.
It's not going to happen for these guys overnight - remember Virgil's brother Gabriel (drums) is still only 15, and Tom on bass is 16.
Let the kid learn from the Masters for a while, then lets see where he wants to take it.
