Re: New guitar R8
I believe R8 and R9 have the same frets nowadays?
My JB LP and R( are identical at least and the JB is supposed to have a '59 neck (?).
Looks like 6105's to me.

R8's used to have different frets than R9's but NOT anymore. Really, r8 and r9 are the samething except flame top. The neck difference varies so much from guitar to guitar so there is no real consistency. An r9 can be larger than an r8 and vice versa. The only thing I miss with my R8 is a flame top But it's really awesome, I feel satisfied with the tone. My jubilee clone is on it's way, I haven't had a chance to play it through a real amp but it will be great.
So basically, R9 if you wanna pay for the top. That's it. And the serial begins with an 9. I would have gotten an r9 if I had another 2 grand to drop for a flame top
You have to try more than 1 historic at the same time. I was originally set for an ice tea, the store had an washed cherry R8 as well. I tried the ice tea and really liked it, but when I tried the cherry I felt it was much better. Basically, without anything to compare it with you won't be able to tell how good it is.
Looking at them now and they have different frets, both models are VOS and ones 2 yrs old, the just under a year and a half. The 59's are jumbo, 58's medium and no it wasn't re-fretted.

Strange, I checked, and my 2008 R8 and the JB LP really are identical. Also same width as on the 2005 US Strat (Dunlop 6105) but these are a little bit taller and rounder on the top.
I don't know when it last changed, but new ones are the same. Of this I am certain...
The admin on the gibson forum, who works at the custom shop, confirmed the only difference between R8 and R9 is the thinner neck profile and flame top. The frets are the same. Posted on June 9, 2008.

That being said, it is a custom shop, and they will customize guitar for a paying client. So I'm sure it's possible to have a 59 with jumbo frets if the original buyer requested it, or maybe the shop just decided to put jumbos on a few just to confuse us. Anything is possible...
Ok, I stand corrected, after seriously looking this over I have to say thay are the same. They feel much different and by looking the 58's look smaller, and the 59's look larger. Thats the way they feel as well. Cool, learned something new today ...
