Topic: Gibson LPs...Standard, Traditional or Traditional Pro

Hi all,

First time post from a long time lurker.  I'm currently thinking of buying a new Les Paul and was wondering what you guys think.  I had a 96 Standard a few years back and loved it...I believe that model was weight relieved but not chambered.  Of the current stable of new Gibby's which would you choose?  There's little chance I can afford a custom or signature model, so of the three mentioned in the post title which one takes your fancy?

Also, the difference between the Traditional and Traditional Pro...locking tuners and 60s neck on the Pro..what else? Is it true the Pro has a plain top?

What about pickups...57s on the Trad and Trad Pro...Burstbuckers on the Standard right? What's the difference there?  My old 96 standard had the 490 498 combination and I found them a little dark.

Is it still the case that the quality control is a bit dodgy? How safe would you feel ordering online? Ideally I would like to play as many as I could before buying but finding that many LPs in the west of Ireland is kinda impossible.

After some internet research I'm leaning toward a Traditional in Desert Burst but I'd like your opinions also.

If I go ahead with a purchase I'll be plugging my new baby into my Silver Jube combo.....best amp I've ever had (or even played through for that matter)...and I picked it up a year and a half ago for the princely sum of €375 believe it or not big_smile  Actually it was while researching the amp that I found this place and discovered Joe....I'm a big fan now. Hope to see him at the Cork Opera House in December, where my fellow countryman, the late great Rory Gallagher tore it up.

I have the Trad Pro, but in Ebony, so cant comment on whether the top is plain or not.

One thing you missed is that thr Trad Pro have coil spilts, giving you some more tonal options. Although I rarely use them, got a start if I want that sound smile Also I think it is 2 different pickups in it, the 57 and another set whose names escapes me at this moment.

The only quality issue I had was on some of the binding on the neck close to the body, they are a coupple of "burr" like residues where they havent cut it 100%, easily fixed with a calm hand and razor. They are barely perceptible, so I left em in fear of doing damage smile

I have a Traditional Plus and I love it, It has a Classic 57 and a 57+ in the bridge. No Tone pros bridge and no split coils. The Pro has those and the slimmer neck, has a 57 Classic in the neck and a burstbucker in the bridge. Most of the pros I have seen where plan tops, and they are a Guitar Center Exclusive here, though I have seen a couple in mom and pop stores. I liked both guitars a lot but like the Plus a bit more, the neck is a little bigger but not much, to me the Plus sounded better. But you should try as many as you can they all sound different. I did order mine online but that was after I knew what I wanted and was able to find a dealer that had the "Right" guitar.

Only advice I would give you is, whatever you choose, if you're spending that amount of money, don't get it online. You don't really know what your getting. No two guitars are the same and you need to find something you feel comfortable with in terms of playability and sonically. You'll get that sitting in the store and playing it for a while. At least if you don't like it, you can try something else at no cost. If you buy it online and find you don't like it....!!
