Topic: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

I got a video sent to me from a friend. I was very impressed, even my hubby was impressed (no mean feat). Thought I'd pass it on to you guys, see what you think. The bio below is from his web site.
There are eight videos of him taken at the HOB in Atlantic City. The link is to a track called Cannonball.
He is playing four dates in London from the 6th to the 9th Nov. Hubby and I are planning on going down for the gig at the Bull & Butcher in Whetstone, can't wait.
Amazingly this guy is unsigned! Not for long I'm sure. I hear he's going to be supporting Johnny Winter soon, good luck to him.

In the history of rock n roll there is a long tradition of guitarists trading in their jobs as sidemen to become virtuoso frontmen in their own right. Early on Jimi Hendrix played in Little Richards’ band and Eric Clapton worked with numerous groups like John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Cream and Derek and the Dominos before starting his legendary career as a solo artist. Even Stevie Ray Vaughn had a stint as a member of David Bowie’s touring band before going solo. There seems to be something about apprenticing with another artist that brings out the best in some guitar players. After spending years honing their craft it becomes impossible for their unique style and personality to be held back. Such is the case with Billy Walton. Since the age of 15 Walton has plied his craft in the Asbury Park/New Jersey shore music scene--most notably as the guitarist/vocalist for Boccigalupe & the Bad Boys which features Tony Amato a veteran of the Asbury scene since the 70s (the nickname...Boccigalupe was actually given to him by Bruce Springsteen & Little Steven Van Zandt). During his time with Boccigalupe, Walton has played countless gigs in both the United States and Europe and sat in with numerous of rock luminaries including Springsteen, Gary US Bonds and Stevie Ray’s backing band, Double Trouble. The 30-year old Walton’s talents are no secret among everyone in the Jersey shore music scene and with the founding of the Billy Walton Band there’s little doubt his reputation will grow far beyond the Garden State. The Billy Walton Band’s sound is a combination of hard blues reminiscent of Hendrix, Clapton and Vaughn mixed with a healthy dose of Warren Hayes and Derrick Trucks. Live, Walton has always been an explosive performer with jaw dropping talent but with the addition of bassist William Paris and drummer Marcus Croan the Billy Walton band churns out a singular brand of funky blues that has deep roots in both the jam band musical tradition as well as the Jersey shore Walton has cut his teeth on. Walton’s connection to his heroes is not just through his record collection. Over the years he has developed a close friendship with Roger Mayer, the well-known British guitar effects guru whose devices have played such a pivotal part in rock n roll for nearly every major player since Hendrix. But regardless of his influences or where he’s from, the Billy Walton Band’s ultimate appeal lies in the unique musical gifts of its founder, Walton himself, who, like his forebears is poised to join the long and storied list of sidemen whose time has come to step out front

Re: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

Hi William,
so glad you dusted off that post! Thats great information. I was gonna ask if you had any European dates planned ie. Germany, but that list of UK dates fits just perfect.

My daughter's 15th birthday is the 9th October (she's a guitar player) so I will be over to celebrate with her. She lives in the area so we will be either at Chislehurst on the 8th or The Anchor on the 9th. Maybe both!

Maybe Billy can give her some tips on pedal set-ups and how much practice the best players need to be doing. She don't listen to the old man...........

Looking forward to it already.

Hi William,
Thanks for posting your dates up. Simon and I are hoping to see you at the Robin on the 6th.

hansamike,
when I studied history I wrote a paper on the hanseatic league.   Lubeck is my home away from home.  I've been visiting there since I was a little boy.  My mother is Germany so I'd live to bring the band over and could easily get us around.  Where in Germany are you?  Billy has quite a collection of pedals.   He especially loves his Roger Mayer pedals.  I'm sure he'd talk to your daughter about them.  I don't know if he'll give any of his secrets away!

Any U.S. dates in the Washington D.C. area?

PS: For you lucky people in the UK Billy will be doing 2 shows w/ Walter Trout!!!

Hah! I know Luebeck very well, and I fly in and out of there all the time on my way to and from the UK. Its a beautiful city, and of course, if you are a marzipan lover - the centre of the universe!

I'm also in North Germany, in the Heide, quite near to Lueneburg, about 50 mins south of Hamburg. Small world.

Would be great to bring the band over. Lots of venues in and around Hamburg /Niedersachsen and a big Blues / Bluesrock fan base. Hopefully, there will be a chance to say hello at one of the 2 South London gigs I mentioned. Should be a lot of fun

Re: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

Sorry to be picky, but SRV was already 'solo' before he worked with Bowie on Lets Dance and he turned down the Tour so he could continue to work with Double Trouble (and have the freedom to do things his own way, rather than Bowies structured approach)

Re: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

Impressive. If he's supporting Walter Trout on a couple of gigs, Walter better be on top of his game. Pity he isn't supporting him on a few more. Would love to have seen BW on the bill when WT plays The Ferry in Glasgow on the 17th Oct.

Re: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

i've seen some videos. i don't like his way of playing... i mean, he has nothing to offer. at least for me. but he is good.

Re: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

I'm off to see the band on Friday at the Boom Boom Club in Sutton. Hope you enjoy your opening UK gig William.

I watched the vids but I reckon a recommendation from Tripsy is good enough for me.

It will be nice to meet some new people!  our show in Cardiff has just been cancelled.  If you want to hear some of the songs on our new cd here's a link to a podcast.  They played 5 songs.

Hi Tripsy,

You could be a PR rep for up & coming bands. smile   Funny about Walton...I live in New Jersey and never heard of them...I'm closer to Atlantic City than Asbury Park.  Good luck to the Billy Walton Band!

Roman, not to be picky back at you, BUT my understanding about SRV and Bowie is: initially David Bowie was very gracious towards SRV, directly after Stevie was heavily booed by crowds at Montreaux, so yes he was solo before Bowie came along.  Stevie turned down Bowie for the Serious Moonlight Tour, but played lead guitar on the Let's Dance album.  I've read others take on this as being negative towards Bowie, which kinda' bothers me, cause I think he reached out to Stevie because he recognized his talent.  I just see it as Stevie staying true to his heart and getting back to the blues and promoting his own music,  that's all.  The Bowie stint was a stepping stone and an opportunity to make some change and get some recognition, etc. IMHO

And literally 10 minutes ago, Let's Dance came across my car sirius radio and I cranked it up...LOUD!

Now back to Billy...the dude knows how to get down on a strat..seriously fast fingers!!!

Re: Billy Walton Band - You gotta watch this guy!

Had a great rockin' evening watching the Billy Walton Band at the Boom Boom Club in Sutton last night.

Good job I nicked my wife's sat-nav for the evening as I would have got completely lost or crashed the car trying to read a map. The club is not exactly easy to find. I say club in the broadest sense of the word as I was kind of expecting a dedicated music club. But if I'd read the details properly I would have realised it's a football club's club-house. I wouldn't want to put anyone off going especially as the management are clearly dedicated to putting on quality live music - just don't go expecting a cosy music venue.

In the interval between the support band and Billy's slot I spotted Maggie and Lydia and went over to say hello. It really was great to see them again after we met on the RAH weekend. They had a spare seat so kindly invited me to join them so there we were we representing the JB forum for the night. Later, Simon from the Aynsley Lister forum recognised Maggie and came to say hi so we had a good chat with him and his pal too

Then the Billy Walton Band kicked off. All I can say is... well recommended Tripsy. I knew I could rely on you. The band are real rockers. A bit of blues-rock, soulful blues, old fashioned rock and roll and even a bit of tongue-in cheek rockabilly. Billy is a fast and talented guitarist (and a Hendrix fan by the sound of it). There was some seriously good music but also a lot of fun stuff which made for bit of a party atmosphere.

This was the first show of their current UK tour so, if they play near you, do go and see 'em.

After the show I went and said hello to Billy and William (don't know where Marcus the drummer was) at the merch stall and bought their latest CD “Neon City”. Nice blokes – really friendly and accessible. Billy kindly signed my CD and added “keep rockin”. He did.

It was great to see you there David. It is really special meeting up with fellow forum members.  Also glad that you enjoyed it - didn't think that you would be disappointed - Lydia and I are off to the Beaverwood on Thursday to see the show again - this happened to me the last time I saw the band - just had to have more!!!

The story is that Bowie saw SRV at the 82 Montreux festival where they were booed, and loved what he saw. He struck up a conversation with Stevie and the band after that show in the musician's bar. The next night, Stevie and DT were playing this bar, and members of Jackson's Browne's band saw them, went up and got Browne, and brought to this club, where they all jammed all night, and Browne ended up offering SRV & DT free studio time at his studio in Los Angeles record a demo. These demo sessions later became the Texas Flood recording. While recording Texas Flood, Stevie got the call from Bowie asking if he would play on his new record. Stevie accepted and went to New York to cut the tracks. Because his playing was so good on the album, Bowie offered SRV a spot on his upcoming tour, saying that he could play in his band and then Double Trouble could open the shows. Of course SRV accepted, and his manager Chesley Millikin booked some stuff over in Europe for the band on some Bowie off dates. Bowie caught wind of this and became furious, and asked that Chesley sign over all managerial rights to Bowie's manager for the entirety of the tour. SRV and Chesley both got fed up with it and went back to Texas and stay with Double Trouble. Of course, John Hammond Sr. gets the Texas Flood tapes, gets SRV and DT signed to Epic Records, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Anyway, this Billy Walton is a really good player, especially in the blooze/rock mold. Some cool stuff indeed.
