Topic: Two weddings...and a funeral?

My younger daughter (22 yrs) got engaged about 3 weeks ago. We've known the guy she's marrying for almost 10 years because he was a high school classmate of our older daughter. He's a great guy and they are madly in love. My wife and I didn't think we could be happier.
Then my older daughter called. She is on a 3 week trip through Europe with HER boyfriend and he proposed 4 days ago (we didn't find out until yesterday) while they were having dinner on the Isle of Capri (she said yes). I am so happy for her. She has been through 2 years of hell with 5 ankle surgeries, wheelchair for 3 months, crutches for at least a year, still hobbling (she brought a cane with her for the trip). They have been dating a little over a year. She was so self-conscious about the crutches, the limp she has and the potential (which still exists) that she will never walk normal again. He came into her life and healed all of that. Another great guy, so evidently we can be happier.
To use baseball vernacular, we're batting 2 for 2 right now. Two at bats and two home runs, as far as son-in-laws go.

The funeral?...We've started to look at wedding costs and I have no idea how in the he** we're gonna pay for all this and it's killing me! lol

Re: Two weddings...and a funeral?

Congrats to Carly AND your other daughter. You and your wife have done a great job Bill! I suggest bribery! Money for a wedding or money towards a house. It KILLS me how expensive weddings have gotten. I can't imagine having monthly payments for years for a single day. I hope they are creative and sensible in their planning. I had a great wedding at the farm..beer truck, horse shoes, 2 bands, pit beef. Shame I didn't have a good marriage to go with the ceremony:(  Best to you all Bill and, again, congratulations!!!!   Cathy

Re: Two weddings...and a funeral?

Well Bill.
First of all congratulations with the 2 weddings.
Wow both daughters, that is very nice and will cost some.
But It's all for the good right?
Good luck to you and your girls!

Re: Two weddings...and a funeral?

Yeah Bill,
My father in law pulled me over one day and said I have this much money $xxx.  You can have the kind of wedding her mother wants or you can put it down on a house.  I wound up doing 50-50 +/- because Tia didn't want to rent, thank God.

Mother-in-law begrudgingly admitted to me after all was done, that she didn't believe how well it went.  And we've been at war ever since. lol

Re: Two weddings...and a funeral?

Hi Bill,
Congratulations to you and your wife; may your daughters live happily ever after.  My mom's favorite spot in Italy is the Isle of Capri.  My sister Gina and I did the same thing to our parents 20 something years ago; our weddings were 3 months apart.  If there is any consolation, the bar bill at my wedding wasn't as bad as my dad thought it would be.  The next time I watch Father of the Bride, I'll toast you! wink

I thought the last time you mentioned it, your daughter was on her second surgery, 5 surgeries...YIKES!!  I hope she continues to improve, not that I'm a doctor or anything, but I do know a few in the foot and ankle speciality.  If she doesn't improve consider challenging a good teaching hospital connected to a med school...this is sometimes where the toughest cases end up (the kind you read about in med. school textbooks)...there is always new techniques/solutions developing in medicine.  Make sure she gets all her records and x-rays etc. put on a CD, they are her property.

Best of Luck to both of your daughters Bill, its superb that you like both of the guys.  My hubby will behave just like Steve Martin in Father of the Bride when the time comes! big_smile

Well, time certainly does fly! The first wedding is Saturday, less than 48 hours away. I'm riding the train home from work (10 pm Chicago time), very happy, but wonering how I got to this juncture in my life! Wasn't I just bouncing her on my knee...like YESTERDAY!!!??? To borrow from the Wisconsin tourism federation, WTF!

Re: Two weddings...and a funeral?

Congrats to you Bill and to both your daughters!  My son is also getting married this Saturday - you're right - wasn't that long ago he was toddling around the house.  Very scary sometimes.

Make sure you shop around for wedding stuff - there are some very nice places out there that are much easier on the budget than you might think.  My son is actually getting married at a small art/craft museum the next town over.  It is a beautiful, cozy place and they are one of those "hidden gem" places that exist all over - just gotta look or get lucky.  The kids are paying for a lot of this themselves - makes them a bit more budget conscious than if all of us parents were footing the bill.  I'll be very interested what music gets played during the reception.  I'm sure there will be the obligatory wedding reception music, but hopefully we will get to hear some "not your normal wedding" stuff.  Their first dance is to "When She Dances"  and my son and I will dance to "Back Where I Started" - beautiful song by Derek Trucks/Susn Tedeschi. Get the Kleenex ready!

Gonna be a great Saturday!

Sandy

P. S. Just read the date on the older posts - obviously the Saturday wedding is all set, but maybe the second one isn't?  Have fun!

"There's a lot of people that are in so much of a hurry to be, I guess, to be famous or that they don't want to take the time to learn to play and do all that. They'd rather just knock it down off a computer and maybe get on a game show and get famous..That's fine if that's what you want to do.

Sandy,
Congrats to you too! Our second daughter is getting married December 4th, so a short time to catch our breath before round two! This wedding, my daughter and I will  dance to "Here for You" from Neil Young's Prairie Wind. My wife picked Joe's version of "Funkier than a Mosquitoes Tweeter" to get people moving on the dance floor (nice choice!, wish I'd thought of that).
The next one dad and daughter are dancing to "Asking Around for You", so we're gonna spread the gospel of Joe to all the heathens, lol!
Have fun Saturday!

Holy Moly Bill, you are a lot older than me! My daughter is only 18 and my son is only 12, long time to go before either of them gets married. Just be careful at this one and the next wedding , OK? After all, I don't want you to add to your mended shoulder by breaking a hip. You know what happens to older people when hey break a hip, right? WTF? lol

Hey, don't get all depressed now, you aren't losing two daughters, you're gaining two son-in-laws. And the word is, they both love the Packers!! lol lol

Re: Two weddings...and a funeral?

Thanks for all the well wishes!
The wedding and reception afterward were absolutely perfect!
150 of our closest friends and family partied the night away after a wonderful dinner. The reception hall is an old barn and farmhouse that was turned into a banquet facility, and is a pretty unique venue.

I held myself together reasonably well...made a pretty good run at the father of the bride speech, at least until I got to the "toast". Very short toast, but I had to stop twice to try to compose myself.
My wife added "Funkier than a Mosquitoes Tweeter" to the dance music, which had many people up on the floor and dancing.
I woke up this morning with a bit of a "post party" headache, but all in all, I felt good considering all the wine I drank!

We'll do it all again in 8 weeks!

Is it Carly, Bill? Named after Carly Simon??? And she's taking the plunge December 4th, a Friday? Congratuations to her, if she's anything like you & Jamie, and I know she has to be, he's a lucky guy to join up with your family.
These fall weddings are a trip! Joe's sister Lindsay & Mike Meyer just married also-check out the Congratulations Are In Order topic: http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=11552  and wish them well too! Sure would like just a few peeks of (Email?) pics from all these nuptials wink

Rocket,
Thanks! It was actually Jamie's older sister Carly (yes, Carly Simon is where we got the idea for the name) that got married a week ago. Jamie's wedding is approaching fast (December 4th).
I'll try to get some pictures linked here, but in the meantime, here's a video of the best man and maid of honor's (Jamie) combined (musical) speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ww3ZweXTpA
It's pretty amusing, if I do say so myself.
