Topic: plexi clone with 6v6 power tubes?

I was just reading up on the Voodoo Amps V-plex series. The 25 watt (which is what I want, i have no real need for anything bigger) has 6v6 power tubes.... i thought that the plexi's were a el84 based amp, so would it still have that plexi sound even with the 6v6 tubes???

Jim Marshall from what I understand only used the EL84 because they were hard to pressed to find 6L6 or 6V6 tubes in England back in the 60's.  I have no clue what that amp will sound like but just so you know if you want to swap them out with EL84 for about $100 they sell adapters with EL84 tubes to convert your amp to the tubes you want.

I was just reading about the v-plex 25 watt. I just wondered if it still has that "plexi" sound even with the 6v6 tubes?

I am delighted to say yes it does my friend! smile I am a huge fan of the older plexis and used them live as well on numerous sessions for a number of years. To my ears 6V6's are smaller versions of EL34's but they break up a little easier so you can literally crank the amp up in a club and get that killer power tube preamp up!! It is literally a plexi circuit with plexi transformers. The only difference is that we scaled the transformers for the 6V6's and the tone is outstanding! It truly is inspiring and it will take pedals great if you want to use them in front (IE: boost pedals, overdrives, etc).

You may also want to check out the Fargen Mini Plex. You can put ANY tubes in it without having to rebias it.  Neat thing is too, you can mix and match any combination of tubes!  Imagine having one EL34 and one 6L6, or a EL84/6V6 mix...so many possibilities.  I heard a 1x12 Mini Plex loaded with EL84s and it nails that low volume plexi thing.  Great amps.

I'm also looking at the metroamp jtm45 diy amp kit. It's pretty affordable and I have heard only good things about it. I should be able to afford that one next month. I'll keep you all posted!

A lot of people are raving about the Dr Z Remedy

4 6V6s, and a half power switch to run in 20, or 40 watt mode

Most say it's a Marshall Plexi Rock amp
I was surprised at 6v6 and plexi tone in the same sentence too....

But what do I know, I'm a Blackface guy

I'd get a Marshall Bluesbreaker combo and crank it.  Maybe a tonebender or rangemaster in front of it for a lot of laughs...

If you want the sound of a plexi through a lower powered amp look for an old late 60's  Traynor bassmate with 6V6's. It's a 20 watt amp and once you turn it up past 6-7 it's plexi through and through.

I have a Voodoo V-Plex, 50-watt version.  Very well built, and hand-built.  Have not heard the 25w version, but 6V6s are absolutely killer tubes.  Play an amp with them and you will fall in love if you like classic rock.

Metro amps/kits likewise are killer.  I don't own one, but have played through several and they sound great.  Best plexi clones I have heard, I think.

If you have not owned a plexi, one word of caution:  In my experience they are a one-trick pony.  You get "that sound" and that sound only.  If you want otehr sounds, get three more heads!
