It's the genre.

In hip-hop or (c)rap or whatever you want to call it, to call attention to yourself you need to act as an arrogant punk.

The actual genre requires no talent at all. If you can make up stupid rhymes and chant them to some ear splitting drumming that makes you an artist.

Gee come to think of it I'm an arrogant punk. Maybe I'll start my own record label... cool

This is a bold generalization that is not entirely true.  I don't think Kanye West is very talented and he truly is an immature excuse for a performer, constantly insulting people and taking advantage of his fans (even getting caught lip synching on SNL), but to say this genre requires no talent at all makes me question why you are on the Joe Bonamassa forum, because hip-hop music is very closely knit with the blues tradition.

Many in the hip-hop world are more along the lines of entertainers trying to make money, rather than legitimate artists, but I encourage everyone to check out more intelligent hip-hop music that is certainly more musical.  For example The Roots, who utilize a live band and often play music of artists like Jimi Hendrix.  Also check out Q-Tip, his newest album "The Renaissance" does not have any bad language, but instead is a bold and poetic artistic statement which also features brilliant music performed by modern jazz musicians like pianist Robert Glasper and guitarists Kurt Rosenwinkel and Mike Moreno.

I hated disco, so why should I like hiphop?  And when was the last time you heard of two blues artists shooting it out at a nightclub  or getting caught with unlicensed handguns in their Escalade?

Like I said it's the whole genre. Punk-a$$ stuff.

Ummmm...... In Chicago in the 50s and 60s, the heyday of Chicago blues, artists carried guns and there were shootouts. Although not entirely accurate history-wise, the film Cadillac Records is pretty spot on about how things were back then.

When comparing Chess Records and hip hop of today, it's not that far off to say they're pretty close. There's not much in the way of instrumentation on those Chess recordings of Muddy and The Wolf. No long drawn-out guitar solos. The voice is more important, and most of the time they're full of boasts ("I'm a hoochie coochie man," "I'm three hundred pounds of heavenly joy,") and violence ("I feel like snappin' a pistol in yo face," "I've worn my forty-four so long, done made my shoulder sore").  It's not that far off.

And sure, they didn't have Escalades back then, but there's a reason why Chess was called Cadillac Records. Everybody drove a Cadillac.

Yo, yo, yo, Bro, don't make me bust a cap in your punk a**! lol
(While saying that Tom, I had my arms crossed over my chest and my Titleist Golf hat tipped to one side. I also flashed three different gang signs at you too. wink )

I'm with you, Rap is crap. And trying to compare Rap or Hip-Hop to Blues is not even close. Blues originated wtih dirt poor people who sang and wrote music based on their oppressed lives. The only thing that comes to mind when I think of Rap or Hip-Hop are guns and bling. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

I know I'll be receiving a good scolding from Deez shortly but hey, I's gots to speaks my piece. Ya know? Yo, yo Bro!.....

Rap and hip-hop came from the squalor and poverty that was the ghetto in the 70s and 80s. They were oppressed, they were living crap lives, and they wrote about it. Look up on youtube the song The Message by Grandmaster Flash. They're rapping about the squalor that was the ghetto, much like the old blues singers sang about their lives. And like the old bluesmen like Muddy Waters, they wanted to gain status and wealth. Muddy dressed in fancy suits with the white leather shoes and his hair all done up. The same with rappers today and their bling. Nearly every blues artist from that era talked about guns, from songs like Forty-Four and 32-20 Blues (take my 32-20 and cut you half in two). Violence in blues is nothing new. If you think there is no violence in blues I suggest you look up John Lee Hooker's I'm Bad Like Jesse James or the song Boot Hill, covered by artists like SRV and Johnny Winter.

Not scolding, but educating. It helps one to see something from all sides before forming an opinion.

As per my answer to Jane, IMO Deez. I would state my reasons why I would disagree, but I simply don't have time to do it.

And by the way, Kanye West IS an a-hole!

I know. You're allowed your opinion. As I am allowed to talk about it. Especially on a subject I enjoy as much as this one, regarding how genres came from others, and both are completely foreign yet very close at the same time.

And your last statement we can definitely agree on. smile

Deezer, you are spot on, you know your history bro.

Re: Kanye West is an a-hole...

Not a fan of hip hop or rap but there is no doubting that they are both descendants of the Blues. That said Kanye West being an a hole is a different subject altogether.
If you think you don't like the genre just see what Oli Brown had done with No Diggity.

You can like or dislike rap, all I am saying is the crossover between the genres is undeniable.

As far as the JB LP is concerned, got to pay for my daughter's teeth, or lack thereof, first! Hey wait minute, maybe some of the rappers who had those gold grills on their teeth, could loan me them for my daughter? Hmmmmm...... tongue How much did you say that JB LP was and is it new or worn look? cool

"I hated disco, so why should I like hiphop?"

RICjunkie...this is getting humorous now and I'm not taking your comment offensively, defensively or any other way, but as your opinion.  lol  Disco & hip-hop are so different and totally unrelated to me.  Alot of guys really hated disco, especially hard core rockers, so its not a news flash to dislike disco.  Not you, of course, but some guys let it bother their masculinity, just my opinion, and then some plain just didn't like it.  I'm just curious, do you like any of the Bee Gee's music?

As for me...

I totally don't enjoy hip-hop, but disco on the other hand (or foot) I found enjoyable and still find fun from time to time. big_smile  At least there were some lyrics with the beat that don't degrade women and send mixed messages and the wrong messages to youngsters. I do realize all hip-hop is not the same.  I'm curious if anyone will delete Kayne from the playlist on Air Force One, not a very good role model for children.  I wonder if any Kayne sponsors will drop him or think twice about endorsing him. hmm

BeeGees? (hurl......)
When my age-challenged peers were grooving on the Beatles and Stones I naturally was drawn to REAL musicians: The WHO! Daltry could sing with the best of them, Townshend was certainly no slouch and Moonie and Entwhistle were simply the best at their craft back then. Then I got into Jimi, Alice Cooper, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath... I guess I'm just an old school rocker at heart. But I was always loving the blues. I mean when Clapton and Page were laying down some serious blues licks, that was where I was at. In the 80's when Disco was king, I was listening to SRV and EVH.  Oh yeah, and twice a year when Buddy and Junior would play this converted barn out in the sticks... It's the guitar work that gets me. Voila - I find Joe so until he chucks blues and starts playing hip hop he's stuck with me in his corner. cool
