Topic: Walter Trout, Tallan "T-Man" Latz and Sue DeBaco, Shank Hall 3/29/09..

Saw a very entertaining show this past Sunday night at Shank Hall in Milwaukee. Mr. Walter Trout and his Radicals were scheduled to appear and figuring it was a Sunday night, I thought the crowd might be down a little. Boy, was I wrong! My sister and I showed up at 7:10 for the 8:00 PM show and every table and seat were taken. Thankfully, my friends Carl, Doris and Tallan Latz had gotten there earlier and stood in line. They saved us seats in about the middle of venue.

Sue DeBaco and Wise Fools opened for Walter which was a surprise in itself, as Walter normally has no opening act. They played for 45 minutes and set down a blistering pace. During the break, Carl and Tallan went backstage to say hello to Walter and because he was only scheduled to play 90 minutes, Carl figured Tallan wouldn't be playing with Walter and Band this night. Well, Carl was wrong because as soon as Walter saw Tallan he put his arm around him and quick plans were made.

Walter and the Guys came out and immediately got things going with a spirited rendition of "Fade Away". He played a number of his songs from his current album "The Outsider" and older ones as well. He also played his newest song, "They Call Us Working Class". As always, Walter uses his lyrics to comment about everyday life and this song in particular, hits home today!

About an hour into the show Walter called Tallan up onto the stage and they blistered a classic Blues song. During this song I left my seat, as a number of people did, and sat on the floor closer to the stage to video (see below). Needless to say, the already energized crowd let loose with screams and hollers. Fun? You Bet!!

Total time played counting Walter's three song encore, was 2 hours. Yes, even Walter and his Band were having a great time.

After the show I stood in line to have Walter sign a picture I had taken last time he was in town and to sign one of my guitars. As I greeted him we talked about Joe because Joe's signature is also on that guitar. Somehow, and this really surprised me, but Walter remembered I am part of Joe's Street Team. He told me to make sure I say hello to Joe which I will do in London. I also wanted to thank Walter for coming and also to thank him for getting our "little buddy" Tallan up on stage with him. Walter said, "You know Roy, I really love that little guy!" Yes Walter, I and many others know that feeling. smile

Of course Walter loves T-Man!!! He must see a lot of his style in this talented young man. Sounds and looks like a great night Roy. I've never had a bad Walter experience. Thanks for sharing, Cathy

How right you are on both counts Cathy! It would be hard not to love Tallan; as my friend Nancy put it, "What's not to love?"

And you're also very right about Walter. No matter how tired he is, his shows are always terrific. At the end of every show that I've been to, he comes out and takes his time with every person that comes up to him. Back stage Carl asked Walter what city he played the night before and Walter couldn't remember. I can imagine it's a long, long road when you're touring and your family is not with you. I know he's 2 years older than I am and so I guess we could call him a senior member of music. A truly wonderful man! smile

While looking around to see if anyone’s written a review of Walter’s current CD, Unspoiled by Progress, I first came across Gunter’s post on the “Who’s Buying What” thread where he said:

“WALTER TROUT: Unspoiled by Progress, 20 Years of Hardcore Blues; 3 new titles, 11 unreleased old songs, mostly live, good honest stuff.”

and I can’t disagree. The opening track, They Call Us the Working Class is a spot on comment on the current economic situation and how it's affecting us all and has a similar style to many of the tracks on Walter’s last album, The Outsider. The other tracks include a different live version of Goin’ Down to that on No More Fish Jokes (and to my ears not quite as good, but still very enjoyable) and a few other live tracks that didn’t make it to the previous live CDs for whatever reason, but they’re still definitely worth a listen. In fact I’d go sar as to say that the guitar on some, particularly Sweet as a Flower, is amongst Walter’s finest. Besides the aforementioned They Call Us the Working Class, the other new cuts are Two Sides to Every Story and So Afraid of the Darkness. All in all, I’d say it’s more for those who are already familiar with Walter’s work rather than one to start with if you’re new to him.

I then found this thread and knew I had to post here to remind those in Europe that it’s coming up to the time of year when Walter decamps to Europe and to buy your tickets soon. At the end of one of Walter’s gigs you’ll probably feel like you’ve OD’d on guitar, but what a feeling and what a lovely guy. When I came out of my first Walter gig in London 11 years ago I turned to my friend and said “I wish I could play guitar like that.” He replied. “I Didn’t know you played guitar.” I don’t, but it doesn’t stop me from wishing. hmm

Roy’s videos give a taster of what one of Walter’s shows is like but, good as they are, they’re no substitute for the real thing. Walter is one of many good artists touring Europe this autumn; get out there and support them.

Walter’s tour takes in Germany, Holland, Norway, Belgium and Switzerland as well as 21 dates in the UK, aren’t we lucky. big_smile I’m hoping to be joining the curryman at Shepherds Bush for the last UK gig on 30th October.

Yep, we're off to the M club in crew to see Walter. I well remember Joe playing there when he was so ill he nearly fell over on stage. If you read this Joe - remember the balloon from Sue the following day at Manchester Academy 2?

Thanks for the compliment Phil, but the videos I shot were not all that good. Because we arrived at Shank Hall a bit late this night, I was relegated to almost the last sitting row of chairs rather than my front row position as I normally try for. Walter actually had an opening act, which is a rarity when he plays Shank Hall and the word has gotten out that when he plays, usually Tallan will be up for a number too. Walter, being the wonderful guy he is, has made it clear to Carl, Tallan's dad, that any time he is in town he will make a spot for Tallan. Even though his set was 90 minutes which ran to a little over two hours, he made sure Tallan would play. That video is better than the rest, because I moved up closer to the front and sat on the floor to capture the guys playing together. As always, it was a wonderul Walter Trout night!! smile

And as Phil and everyone else has said, make sure you get to a Walter Trout show as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed. wink

Oh, and I also agree that Walter's new album, "Unspoiled By Progress", is very good; a true Blue Collar Blues CD!

Should be a great night, Steve. In fact, I'm slightly surprised that Philip is appearing with Walter as nowadays seems to be unusual for an artist with a similar style to the main act to be support. I'm not saying that Philip will upstage Walter, which would be almost impossible, but I reckon he'll give him a good run for his money lol and a fantastic night for the audience. You lucky people. big_smile

I'm hoping to see Philip on the 28 Sept and Walter on 30 Oct, but I'm still trying to find out who will be supporting Walter at Shepherds Bush on 30 Oct. If anyone knows, please post here. I've tried the venue (who had no idea) and Walter's website without success. sad

Hey Phil, it looks like the brilliant young harmonica player Jason Ricci will be joining Walter's band for 5 shows in the UK, culminating with the Shepherd's Bush show. I don't think he's the support act for this show (and the the other 4) that your trying to find out, but his addition to Walter's band should make those 5 shows extra special.

Thanks for the heads up Lee. I had a look as you suggested, Jason will be joinig Walter at Milton Keynes, Leamingto Spa, Wolverhampton and Southampton. Those will be great nighs as Jay Tamkin is the support on those dates too! smile
Jason had said in a Blues Matters interview earlier this year that Walter was helping him get to the Uk, now we know what he meant. He plays on Child Of Another Day for those of you that own Walter's The Outsider album.

Good call on the Jason Ricci....I've sung his praises for some time on here.  Last time Jason joined Walter in Europe, it was just Jason, and not his full band, New Blood.

For those on the right side of the big pond, I'd highly recommend checking them out if you have a chance.  Jason's harmonica style isn't like anything you're likely to have heard....best I can sort of explain it is he's like (don't throw things) Jimi Hendrix would sound like if he played harp. His guitarist, Shawn Starski, was nominated "one of the 20 best unknown guitar players" in GP's reader's poll.  Here's a short clip taken by yours truly showcasing a bit of "Guitarski's" talent:
