Topic: Guitar Cords

Hey guys just wanted to get some input on types of guitar cords you guys recommend. I want to upgrade my cords to some high quality stuff and just need some input . I have a 59' reissue running throgh a Bogner Alchemist or my Peavy Delta Blues play mostly blues and rock so many choices out there I figured I could get some input . Thanks ,  Paul

Re: Guitar Cords

The Lava ELC cables are outstanding and worth every penny. I bought some thinking that all of the talk about cable sonic differences was total BS. I was floored when I A/B'd the Lava cables with other big name cables and with the usual "whatever is lying around" cables. I promise you will hear a truer tone from your guitar. This wasn't some minor subjective difference. Their Mini ELC cable is killer for your pedal board as well. I apologize for sounding like I work for the company (I don't), but the product and the service from this company is just so good, I feel the need to share the information. Good luck.

Re: Guitar Cords

Elixir I guess has been making random cables long before they ever made coated guitar strings.  They Claim that their cables are best for a number of reasons, and they even A/B them against George L's I think...

I sort of want to get the Fender Kool Koils. 30' coiled cable for around $20.

Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

they sort of gave me a mid hump odd cable imo...

Re: Guitar Cords

Elixir cables are awesome! Sorry I sound like I work for the company...I do.  big_smile  Employee stock options and such, please buy our cables!!!!!

ummm Spam.

B.S. aside I am still looking for the perfect cables, use montsers now and they're ok.  Waiting for Elixir boys to send me one to try (I work in the Medical division), heard great things about George Ls and mogami.

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Re: Guitar Cords

Hi I'm new here and I'm afraid a bit of a cable geek.
For your set up, I'd get a VOVOX Sonorous.

Expensive but it'll let the details of the guitar come through.

They're also light and less prone to tangling than others.

If it's just guitar to amp, that's my suggestion.. if there's a board between, I recommend a Van Den Hul from the board to amp.

That's my set up and I love it.  big_smile

PS, is it possible to post pics on this forum >?

Re: Guitar Cords

I bought me some Mogami cables after mucho recommendations - brilliant - the silent Neutrik jacks are essential IMO.

Wouldn't buy anything else and the prices weren't bad at all.

Re: Guitar Cords

Cables can make a difference!

However, it might not always be a good one.

Personally, I really like the Planet Waves Cables. Couldn't stand the Monster Cables, though! Go figure.........

Early 80's 1957 U.S. Vintage Reissue Stratocaster (Surf Green)-Warmouth Soloist  Pearly Gates Neck, Pearly Gates Bridge- Larrivee D-03 (Mahogany/ Spruce)
Carmen Ghia Head- Marshall 112 Cab W/G12H 30  or  Custom 4 X 6v6 Head  or  Budda Twinmaster Plus Head-Traynor 212 Cab w/Eminence Texas Heats.
Mo'D-Eternity-Blues Pro- Timmy-BYOC Chorus/Vibrato- TC SCF- Korg DT 10 Pedal Tuner

Re: Guitar Cords

I might have a gander at the VOVOX.

What's wrong with Mogami, Wolf? tongue

Re: Guitar Cords

+1 for Mogami's.  I can be the master of disaster on cables.  Mogami's haven't let me down yet.  Thank goodness, it was starting to cost me a lot going through them all.

Re: Guitar Cords

If you go back awhile, I went through this same thing.  I tried almost everything out there in the $50-$150 range.  I tried everything short of Evidence cables which run around $225 for a 15 ft. cable...a bit much I thought.

Everybody hears things differentlty and expects different things so of course this is all subject.  But, when I came across Accusound Silver Studio Pro's my search ended.

Previously I was using Monster Cable because they were easily available and everyone said they were the best.  One night one went down and I grabbed a Planet Waves..it was as though someone took a blanket off of my amp.  Amazing difference in tone/quality.  So I thought, if there's that much difference bewtween those then how much different would a "high end" cable be?

Lava, George L, Planet Waves, Vovox, Elixir etc...all great cables.  Something about the Accusound stood out.  A clarity and definition and punch that wasn't there with the others.  More harmonics and overtones.  Nice tight lows, warm articulate mids, shimmery highs and over all extremely balanced.  Plus Steve the owner is very accessible and friendly.  When I called to inquire about the cable he asked me what I wanted.  I wanted a silent Neutric right angle end, 15' cord.  He made it for me and I recieved it in two days and was totally blown away.  So much so that I proudly endorse these cables.  Give 'em a try.
Steve is also making a Vintage cable.  According to Steve, with all the diigital stuff, ,he wanted to make a cable to capture the "Old School" tone and vibe.  He sent me one and although it does sound old school...great for crunch and power chords, it just wasn't right for my Fuchs rig.  A little looser low end, slightly compressed mids, and a little less high end make it great for that Stones AC/DC vibe.  Anyway...check them out!!

All said...what is a "true guitar tone"

Re: Guitar Cords

Dave, where in Wales are you ?

I'll lend you a couple of cables to try, and NO I'm not a dealer, just a geek  big_smile

I simply found Mogami rolled off the high end too much for me.

Joe's tone doesn't have much high end and is mostly overdriven so I can see it'd suit him, I have to cover much more tonal ground from country, to funk, to rock, to high gain Pink Floyd, so I need a clearer cable.

I have a few faves, Solid cable, Vovox, Van Den Hul, Elixir, Pete Cornish, Zaolla artist.

Ah very good.

I see why that is good with me too. Has that nice honk, but smooth top end (some would say rolled-off).
I happen to live in North Wales near Bangor and Caernarfon (quite a way from you). P.S how do you PM around here...I'm feeling particularly dumb this week... roll

Re: Guitar Cords

I use Planet Waves cables, the Custom Pro models (with the Amphenol plugs, not those crappy jack destroying spring loaded ones).

Those of you talking Mogami cables, are you talking Gold series?  I assume you aren't talking about the cheap Silver series.  I know the night I saw Joe, he was using a Mogami Platinum.  $60 for a 20 ft cable is about as much as I'll spend (the Planet Waves I use or a 20 ft Mogami Gold) on a cable.  I just can't justify $120 for a 20 ft cable like the Mogami Platinum.  Especially when I need at least 2, guitar to pedal board and pedalboard to amp.  My pedalboard is wired with George L's

Re: Guitar Cords

Instead of buying cables I'm actually about to make my own.

Just about to buy a load of stuff off of ebay and that.. see what happens!

Re: Guitar Cords

Wolf
Nice collection of expensive cables smile  Van Der Hul, Cornish...
I too like the Planet Waves Pro's.  Of all the commonly found cables  the Planet Waves were the best.  When you start looking at special order cables and custom cables I thought the Mogami lost a little sparkle too.  I'm tellin' ya...the Accusound Silver Studio Pro has been the best fit for covering all styles...from heavy rock to jazz...I think it just lets out whatever you're putting into it, ya know?

Have you noticed with some amps/pedals/cables that no matter what guitar you're playing kinda sounds the same?  These cables (and the Fuchs rig) significantly allows subtle tonal variations.  Even a slight tone know shift is noticable.  That's nice!!

Give Steve at Accusound a call.  He's extremely customer service oriented.  He'll make you what you want for a great price.

Re: Guitar Cords

Hey Danny do they have a web site ?
