Topic: Any iPod experts out there?

I was reading online how to play your iPod through a computer that is different than your main one that contains your music library (like at work or whatever).

Following the instructions I connected my iPod to my main computer at home and set it to "Manually manage music and videos" - and then took my iPod to work.

I connected the iPod to my work computer with the USB cable and it recognized it was there, but I couldn't a way to open it or play any music.

I then downloaded iTunes to my work computer and now I can play music from my iPod, but only from the start of my entire catalog and/or by shuffle, but I can't view or select what songs play.

Can anyone help me out? Is there a way to actually view and/or select what's on my iPod to play, from a computer that doesn't host my catalog of music?

Thanks!

Re: Any iPod experts out there?

Not sure. My advice: assuming you have a desk top that has plugged-in speakers, just take the headphone jack out of the back of your computer and plug them in to your iPod. Then you can play directly to your speakers. You could also try moving all of the contents of your iPod to your computer's hard drive. I'm not sure. I'll do some research and get back to you on it.

Re: Any iPod experts out there?

yeah Stu i had a similar problem with my IPod , there is quite a lot of advice on the web for IPod problems and i was getting wild with mine cos it wouldnt sync from my itunes library to my Ipod ... in the end i restarted with old setting and took about a week to upload all i wanted
there was one reason why mine wouldnt work, is i had the eject button "ON" not accepting syncing which next to your name of your IPod on the left hand side of your i Pod page when loaded ..... i too tried the manual version but as i said it all got mixed up
Stu reading back thru your post , i think you've synced it as one transfer and you've combined your whole catologue into one list, dont know if there's a way of reversing that, Good Luck

Re: Any iPod experts out there?

Stu,

Wish this could've been better, but if you call Apple's helpline (1-800 767-2775) then they'll either help you or at least give you iPod's help number.  Also on your task bar after you open up iTunes you can click help/ipod and search for the appropiate tutorial.

Re: Any iPod experts out there?

Thanks all. I've submitted a question to the techies at "Ask iLounge" - a service provided on the iLounge Forums. Hopefully they'll get me straightened out.

In the mean time, the shuffle has been kond of fun today. I'm hearing songs I probably wouldn't have otherwise!

Thanks again

Curby has beaten me to it, as i was going to offer you the same advice. Best of luck, from another Apple iTouch lover!

Plugging an iPod into a computer that isn't the "mother" computer with all the music on it usually doesn't work. Apple sees that as a way to copy songs onto other computers, so they take measures to prevent it. When you plug it in, iTunes probably opens and asks you if you want that new computer to be the new "mother" computer. If you say yes (DONT!) it will take all the music and everything off of your ipod, because it will sync with the computer without all the songs on it.

iPod stuff is more "linked" on the iPod than "saved."

If you want to play your iPod at work through computer speakers, get an extra set of computer speakers and plug into the headphone jack. OR you can just unplug your computer speakers and plug them into your iPod. That's what I do.

Re: Any iPod experts out there?

You can get songs off another person's computer. It's their little security function.

Best way to do this is to carry around a USB Flash drive stick and copy the music onto that. Then when you get home you can put it on your computer that mirrors your iPod.
