Topic: Burst used with Trucks?
Hey Joe, what's the story on the Burst you used when playing with Trucks? I've never seen you use a real Burst on stage, but damn that thing is GORGEOUS!

I believe Joe said it was a borrowed gutiar, but an actual 1959. I love the way it looks with the uncovered white pickups. My 1979 Les Paul Kalamazoo edition has the same uncovered white pickup look, I've always liked it.
I wonder who it was borrowed from...whatever the case, with Joe's recent success I give him under 2 years before he's the owner of SICK burst.
Joe is more than past due to have been added to the ranks of gigging and recording musicians playing bursts. And by 'bursts' I mean 1958-60 Pauls, specifically.
But yeah, I've always loved the look of double whites. Some day when I'm not spending all my money on Top Ramen and Cup O' Noodles I think I'll spring for some nice Wolfetone double whites for my '05 Standard. Then again I do love my gnarled up pickup covers...what a conundrum.
If that's a real '59 then it's hands down the cleanest one I've ever seen! There's no way that's the real mccoy...it really makes no sense to play one on the road. Especially given that Joe has plenty of reissues and signature models at his disposal. If that is a real burst I'd gather it's worth at least half a million dollars given that everything is original. Does anyone have any evidence confirming if that is a real one? I'd be really interested to know! I agree Joe deserves a real burst and I would be surprised if he doesn't have one already.
It would be cool if Trucks let Joe play the Les Paul Gregg Allman gave him. It was a cherry burst plain top from 1958 that was the guitar you hear on The Allman Brothers Band Live at the Fillmore. It was Duane's.
I believe it is real due to these status updates from Joe's facebook and twitter.
"Had a blast playing with Derek on someone's borrowed 400,000 dollar guitar.. I didnt realize til the end.. sorry for the scratch.."
"Jammed with DT last night.. the fans made that happen.. Had a blast.. especially when I realized I was playing a real 59 LP on loan.."
he also had another facebook status update on his fan page that is now unavailable, where he said once he realized the borrowed guitar was a '59 he was amazed at how close all the gibson custom shop models really get to the real thing.
It was def. real. Someone lent Derek and Warren a pair of real 59's for the last 2 Allman tours. I remember reading it somehwere... it was legit from one of them in an interview.
Ben
I would put the estimate at slightly lower than $400,000, with the recession though vintage prices are hitting lows that haven't been seen in awhile. It's hard to tell how clean it is, but I'm guessing she's seen her share of playing, going from the amount of fading. What's interesting is how the very bottom of the outter tear drop is significantly darker than the rest of the finish.

I think maybe it's not been played that much and has sat in a stand where the bottom has been covered. Therefore UV light not fading that.
Just like under the pickguard on some it is still red and under the pickup rings and switch washer.
In terms of it being clean, it does look it, but on burst serial there are quite a few very clean 58-60 LPs.
Here's a pic of the other burst that was lent to Derek. It was the subject of a pretty long thread over on LPF.

I think I've seen that before, there's a good shot of Derek's tech holding it backstage somewhere.
I have never played an orginal burst but I have played a reissue and there are many really great Pauls out there why would you want to take a guitar that is worth so much on the road? I can see owning it and keeping it for recording but on the road no way!
I've never played an original either, but I can tell you one thing for sure, an R9 is nowhere close to a real '59. The 50th Anniversary R9's got closer, but there's almost no substitute for the real thing.
I think you could take a burst on the road safely by abiding by two rules. The guitar stays in the case until it's ready to be played and goes in the case afterwards, and it's kept under multiple locks and keys while on the bus.
I know Robben Ford gave Larry Carlton his '57 Goldtop back because he was afraid something would happen to it though so what do I know?
Whats the point of having it if you don't play it out every once and a while. Its already reliced so you don't have to worry about scatches and also you don't have to worry about it being stolen because you get insurance on a piece like that. Yeah you do have sentamental value that you'll never get back but at least your not out of a beach house or something.
I wouldn't care about the insurance, it's not like that. If I had a Bugatti I'd never drive it, even though it would be insured. It's just one of those things. You do not want to ruin that kind of value in any way, regardless of whether you get all the money back.
My LP is insured, that doesn't mean I wouldn't be completely distraught if it got damaged. It is MY guitar, sentamental value is a big deal to some people.
I totally get that. Sentamental value is huge for everybody. I mean if he was playing that 59' LP and the strap gave way and it crashed and broke the neck clean off I promise you there wouldn't be a dry eye in the house. What I'm kind of getting at is if something was to happen to a expensive guitar like that at least you could have the money to go out and try to find another one. It is the most rare guitar on the planet maybe but they do exist still and you could still buy a new one. I wouldn't recommend taking one on the road but it would be great to at least play out with it at special shows or your home town or something. Whats the fun in it staying in a case for the rest of your life? Better to have loved and lost then to have loved and never enjoyed it.
If Joe did own a Burst Royal Albert Hall would have been one of those special gigs to bring it out on. Hell I'd be stoked just to hear that Joe's using one to record.
That would have been cool on so many levels. I wished I heard boot legs of Derek and Joe playing with it.
