Topic: U2, - one of 88,000
- went to see U2 last night, Wembley Stadium, London - perhaps not an easy connection musically with JB but music is about emotion, and different types of music feed different emotional needs for me. - That and I hate nothing more than being pigeon holed down one narrow musical route, anybody else have an eclectic taste? Oh and my 10 year old son is very into The Edge and his guitar collection, - and the songs Elevation and Vertigo are a couple of his favorites. His eyes were glued to the binoculars telling me that it was a black Fender Strat with black scratch plate and honey varnished neck with a large head-stock (for "Streets have no name"), - oh and now it is his faded Les Paul custom, and now the 60's Epiphone...
Anyway, - just thought I would share what was a very interesting and good experience. I might be wrong but I do not think that there are many who could connect with a stadium audience these days, but U2 and their massive crew do. Their stage set is out of this world, - this 360 tours is all about them playing massive football stadiums so the "claw" set sits in the center of the pitch, - a small circular stage with a much larger walkway stage with 2 rotating bridges leading to it. And the light show... it is amazing in the center of the stage is a 360 degree set of hexagonal TV screens, - the band are filmed at all times by 100's of cameras and these images are brilliantly displayed on these screens at all times, - with a massive spire of disco balls. - Ok so it is over the top and even Bono described it as "mental" and must be some sort of tax evasion ploy because so much money is being spent but boy do entertain.
4th song in and everybody in the place was up on their feet being led through the emotional ride that is the U2 catalogue, - and if you want to see some interesting guitars, amps and pedals, The Edge is worth watching. Bono, - well Bono is Bono, bit of theatrical drama queen for me, - but he can sing, - and seemed to keep the political ramblings in check, - and fair enough what is going on in Burma is well worth a mention! The other 2, - Adam and Larry just keep it chugging away, - AC at one stage was just leaning against the rail of the bridge doing what was needed.
I got some great videos which I will post up on YouTube at some point (when I have a spare day to upload them) but U2.com have some rather good ones:

I did wonder how Joe would perform in a place like this, - well he has done the RAH, - what's next? - I think the band would look good and the sound of "Last Kiss" and "Just Got Paid" would work well....
edit, sorry must check my smelling before I publish...:P
