Thanks I handpicked that one among a cherry sunburst, a Goldtop, and a Desert Burst. This one was the winner because it handled just perfectly (really great neck) and had the best tone. Now I also find it has the best colour, too -- I love light burst.

It's just the neck pup which I find a bit too dark. I'm going to change pots and caps with a 50s wiring. I wonder whether this will have drastic tone changes which I might not like... or are they subtle?

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

The muddy sounding neck pu has always been a problem for me with lp's.  For many years I played a PRS single cuts which over came this.  I have a 1977 LP gold top standard that I've had since 1980, the neck PU is clear but it's like a piece of furniture  at 11.4 lbs!  Last month I bought a 2008 LP Custom (alpine white) and it sounds beautiful, everthing I wanted without breaking my back. The custom PU's seem clear and articulate, try'em!  Dave

If heartaches were nickels, I'd have 35 cents!

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

My classic had stock everything until I swapped out the pickups for 57' classics.  Later I found RS Guitar works and tried them out.  If anything you have so much more adjustment to your sound that even if it is to bright wide open you'll be able to dial it back down to your tastes.  Night and day difference my friend.  I swear you'll wanna change everything you own after that.

Just what I wanted to hear. Report will follow once I installed the kit.

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

How long did they say it will be for the kit to arrive?  Has it arrived?  Is it installed?

2009 Gibson Les Paul 1958 VOS (with black plastic)
2008 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Goldtop (with the cream plastic from the 58RI)
> Marshall Bluesbreaker 2 pedal >Boss sd-1> DD3 > Vox Ac15cc1

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

It arrived at the beginning of this week but I won't install it before next week. A friend of mine will do the soldering and he's busy until then.
Can't wait to hear the difference. Report will follow.

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

I just ordered a Traditional Plus in Ice Tea should be here monday I can't wait!

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

You're going to love it, I'm sure. There's two reasons I went for the Traditional: the great neck and the 57 classics.
Let me know how you'll like it.

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

Its finally here and its FREAKING AMAZING! The Flame on it is unbelieveable and the tone is just SO Fat it kills my studio even with the upgraded Pups! The neck is nice medium size that I am getting used to but really like it. If I can find a place to post some pics I will get some up. Mine is Ice Tea Burst Plus top!

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

Hey Big E, I knew you'd like it! cool The Traditional Les Pauls are great value and I think Gibson has a winner here. I don't understand why people criticise Gibson for lacking QC. I picked mine from a bunch of 4 Traditionals and they were all immaculate.
I've finally installed the RS kit. The tone of the neck has improved for sure. Overall, the guitar sounds a bit less compressed (I guess that's what is meant with "opening up" the pickups). There's much more to play with the tone pots. If you turn them quickly from 0 to 10 and back it has a Wah-like effect -- just to show the wide range of tones available.
I'm still undecided whether I should leave the volume pots wired modern or 50s style. Topic for another thread. smile

Re: Les Paul Traditional neck pickup

Its a great guitar! Here are some pics! And if anyone is looking for a good deal I talked to the dealer that I got it from and he said he would "Hook up" my friends.

Good looking Les Paul.  Some of gibsons guitars with flamed maple don't match up well but that one looks great!
