Topic: The Ashes

It's the Ashes again! And we are hosting this time round. England v Australia. The first Match of five is under way, and is near to a close. For any Americans among you, who don't know the game of Cricket, we the British invented it. I would explain it, but i can't be asked! and i think the basic rules of the game are not the easiest to explain. Just to say, you have two teams, the pitch is round, or oval, you have a bat made out of wood,(willow) and a very hard Red Leather Ball, i could go on, but as i said, i can't be asked at the moment. It is a big event, and will continue for the next six weeks!

What Brack neglected to say was despite inventing the game and teaching other nations to play it, we are, with the occasional exception, crap at it.

England though, invariably, are the world champions at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and shall probably retain that crown over the current series, thus enabling the damned Australians to crow over us for another interminable period.

Despite my negativity over Englands chances this time around on a good day cricket can be a majestic sport of skill and tactics with supreme individual performances. At its worst you can literally sit and watch the grass growing and the white paint on the site screen drying. Still even on those days the beer in the shires suppresses the boredom and one can dream of a rare victory to the sound of leather on willow..................

Thanks hansamike for that. He is right of course, but i didn't want to start off being negative.
It is also a game where two teams can play for up to 5 days and in the end, nobody wins! A good example being today, the first Test ended in a draw. It is quite strange for anyone looking in, who doesn't know the game, but thats the game of Cricket!

The second test is under way today. England went in to bat first, started well enough, the captain got a ton, but poor old Freddie got out for 4!!!!! Lets hope tomorrow goes well. Fingers X

So, England did do better today, first innings, all out for 425. Australia 111 for 5, so far..... continues tomorrow....

Yes i know! Not for everyone. I used to play in my school team as well. I was more a medium pace bowler than a batsman. But what else is going on, apart from, Le Tour de France. Oh yeah, the Golf Open is on at the moment. I have been lucky i've played a bit of Golf as well, but not for my school! smile

So England have, and did win the second test at Lords. Something England haven't done in a very long time.

So, congratulations to the lads, and Freddy Flintoff in particular. Onward and upward to the third test next week!

The third Test begins on Thursday, at Edgbaston, in Birmingham, for anyone who doesn't know where that is.

Freddie Flintoff out injured. sad
England chose to bat first on the first day, but all out for 102
Aussies 196 - 4
So, not a good start for England on the first days play.

Brack old mate - give it up

There are seventeen posts here and fourteen of them are yours!

Nobody cares. People have died spectating at cricket matches and no one knew for days. The only things about the game I can recommend are all day drinking and a cream tea.

Its the only sport I know that is best captured in paintings - because nothing is actually happening. The artist has so much time to capture the image as the game moves that slowly.

Hey, I'm joking, as you will know. Its forum 'sledging' I suppose. Enjoy your Seamers, bouncers, off breaks, leg breaks, googlies, leg stumps, off stumps, silly mid ons and offs, slips, extras, no balls, lbw's and ducks.

Tell you what. Here's the deal. Just post WHEN we win the Ashes. Should protect us for the next 25 years or so.:)
