Well, saw Derek last sunday at a blues fest. in belgium.
And he was fantastic...

Good review, Thomas: YOU WERE UP EARLY!!

For me it was next to RAH the concert of the year. Derek played four songs from Already Free: Down in the Flood, Down don´t bother me, I know and Sweet Inspirations, older songs: Mahjoun, I´ll find my way, Anyday, Soul Serenade Key to the Highway, Get out my life and some more. My personal highlights were an extremely sweet inspired "Sweet Inspirations"( it was one of the few occasions when a sort of light smile appeared in Derek´s face) and a free jazz version of Greensleeves including a sample of Afroblue.

The band - clearly focussed on Derek but also allowing each one  enough space - presented a wide range of musical styles (blues, soul, jazz, Latin, Indian flavour) and nonetheless kept always its special sound personality. And it´s awsome what this guy is doing with his guitar.There were a lof of these magical moments, when the music was exactly like music has to be - the dao of music.

Derek hasn´t got really a charismatic show personality. He talked only introducing his band members. And he hardly moves, seems to be a true introvert resting in himself. (I was astonished that after the show he was very talkative and easy.) I didn´t mind because - as a friend was saying - we were there to listen to good music, not to nice stories.
And we got such a lot of really good music.

I was asked to write a full review of the DTB's concert in Glasgow, which I should not share with you on here, but needless to say is very positive. I thought you might be interested inthe band's perspective though. This is from Yonrico Scott's blog (he's the drummer):

"As most of you guys know, we, The Derek Trucks Band, have played and loved playing venues of all shapes and sizes. We pride ourselves on never saying no. If the time is right, we come to play.

We have been hanging in the wonderful town of Glasgow, Scotland, a beautiful town that is full of history and full of Scottish style. We took a field trip to the Castle of Edinburgh the other day. Edinburgh is about a hour from Glasgow by train. So I was able to look through a new port hole, a bullet train. I was so into seeing sheep everywhere. The nicely-landscaped countryside, and homes from another time flashing by... We were warmed by the people around us who made us feel so at home. It made me look for a kilt. No luck but I will keep trying.

So we get to the sound check and it was business as usual. Just get the gear ready to play some tunes and to open some minds. We got to gig time and I had the feeling it was going to be fun. I can count on one hand the times it wasn't fun, and I have been here 15-plus years. When it was gig time we walked out I thought to myself “man it is hot up here, but it is time to roll.”

The first tune was “Down in the Flood.” It felt good but I had to be careful because the ceiling was so low, I could be very non-musical if I did not control the level of my drums. It is great playing with Derek, he has huge ears and is my meter. When we finished the first tune the crowd went nuts, like really nuts. Right then Derek, which I never seen him do before, rolled up his sleeves! From the heat and to say yes it's HOT but let's give these people what they want to hear, some dTb!

So Derek, Todd, Count, Mike, Kofi and I started to dance our way through the tunes: 2) Down Don't Bother Me 3) Soul Serenade 4) I’ll Find My Way 5) Gonna Move 6) Get What You Deserve 7) Mahjoun 8) Sweet Inspiration 9) Crow Jane 10) Get Out My Life Woman 11) Greensleeves/Afro Blue 12) Key To The Highway

Through most of the set these down-home folks were singing all the words. That was smoking! They were with us all the way - when we brought it down, they came with us for the ride, and that is what I am talking about.

I got on the mic and said “good night and thank you,” but they wouldn’t let us go! So we hit them with We’re A Winner… Derek did that laid back in-the-pocket soloing he does so well. Glasgow went NUTS, again!! So we had to close this thang out with the house-rocking “Get What You Deserve*.”

This town rocked us and we have done the work the band has done for years, bringing the world our sound, our spirit, our hearts and souls.

We are now in the second half of our tour and I am still feeling the vibe I felt the first day we started. Looking through my port hole and able to share with y’all has been great. Big thanks every one!"
