Topic: RIP Walter Cronkite

For my generation he really was "The Most Trusted Man in Television". Prior to cable or internet, news sources were limited. I grew up with Walter. I remember him when I think of any major events from the 60's. I watched the advent of the Space Race with him, including the first walk on the moon. I also went thru the assassinations of JFK, MLK, and RFK with him. He lived a full life and we all benefited from it. Thoughts to his family.      Cathy

No surprise that I echo Cathy's words, as we're from the same generation.

I also echo the President's words -

"Walter was always more than just an anchor. He was someone we could trust to guide us through the most important issues of the day; a voice of certainty in an uncertain world," President Obama said in a statement Friday.

"He was family. He invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down. This country has lost an icon and a dear friend, and he will be truly missed."

RIP Iron Man

Re: RIP Walter Cronkite

I echo Cathy's sentiments as well. I first heard of Walter, when America put men on the moon. A great broadcaster of his day, America will miss him.

Re: RIP Walter Cronkite

Cathy's absolutely right - he was the most trusted man in America when news reporting was still an admirable profession.  It saddens me that his modern counterparts are just the opposite.  Every night, at the dinner table at six with my family, Walter would tell it like it was and with no inflamatory rhetoric - just old-fashioned news reporting.  I was just a child when Kennedy was assassinated, but I'll never forget seeing that adult man struggling for the words to tell a nation their beloved President had died.  He's right up there with Edward R. Murrow and Ernie Pyle as one of our best newsmen.  Sad day indeed.

Another Icon has left us. RIP Uncle Walter.......

Re: RIP Walter Cronkite

Yes, even on our side of the Atlantic, he was a legend. I recently researched the "Airpower" series in my quest for information about the "Battle for the Pacific" and Truk Lagoon. What gravitas that man had, clear concise and personal - a hero of his day that will be remembered by so many. Rest in Peace

Right you are.  Now we have muckrakers on both extremes left and right.  RIP Walter.  There;s a high place for you!

Re: RIP Walter Cronkite

Like Tim Russert, Walter Cronkite was a class act with integrity!  RIP

I thought this was interesting about Walter reporting on John Lennon.
