Topic: Vintage Modern vs Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb

As my search for tone winds down through the hundreds of amps and amp reviews...(head is swimming)  I think I am closer to making a final decision but I would like some opinions...I would like objective points of view...well as objective as one can be...

Again playing both a Fender American Deluxe Strat and a Les Paul Traditional and playing classic rock and blues rock (Hendrix to Zeppelin and beyond)....

Which amp would cover the wider range from blues to classic 60's-80's rock?

Is the Marshall VM clean enough?

advantage of 2x12 vs 1x12?

I'd run the Marshall VM on its own but if I got the DRRI then I would run it with my Vox AC15...what are your thoughts on that combination of amps?

Thanks for all of your help!!!

Re: Vintage Modern vs Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb

While you would be able to cover more tonal ground with two amps and some pedals, for the tones you are describing it sounds like the Vintage Modern may be a better fit.  When I think Zeppelin and Hendrix I typically think distorted tones anyways.  Now what I like to do with the Vintage Modern is run it on the High Dynamic Range with a healthy amount of gain (enough to do leads and stuff) then use the volume on the guitar to get the cleans.  They are not Blackface Fender cleans, but definately vibey and servicable.  For the ultimate in heavy rock/blues and the ability to get the clean to mean thing better than anything I've heard would be a Trainwreck type amp.  Check out Glen Kuykendall's video's of his Express and '59 Les Paul.  I will building an Express clone soon myself...I can't wait!!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

I've got a VM (50 watt head with 2x12 orange cab V30's)..I run it on the low dynamic range..so it's clean..start to break up if you push the master volume and body+detail..but fairly clean..than I use a tubescreamer to get my basic sound..use the volume on guitar to get clean..full up it's lead..6 or 7 is crunchy rhythm..

Great amp!

Good luck

Re: Vintage Modern vs Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb

While I'll like my Deluxe Reverb a lot, I don't go to it for Classic Rock,
Do my Skynyrd on it.

And while the VM gets pretty thick, didn't find it to be too high gain.

Not sure what Classic Rock you goin for
But neither one of those would be what I'd go for if I was
buying on one amp.

Mesa Lonestar Classic, would be my choice.
Not the highest gain either, but covers a boat load of ground

With a DR or VM, you would need pedals for sure
