Topic: Earplugs?

I'm taking a poll on how many of us wear earplugs. I noticed this week that I get my amp sounding good without earplugs in. Then when I put my earplugs in, it sounds completely muffled and different. I don't know if it is the brand of the earplugs or not. In recent years I thought it just filtered out volume while doing a minimal sound change.

I think it's worth it to "save your ears" by wearing earplugs, but it would also be nice to have what I hear and what the crowd hears be the same.

Does anyone have trusted brands of earplugs???

Re: Earplugs?

My dad wears them for when he goes shooting I think he has some sort of electronic gizmo noise cancellation, tbh never thought of using them for gigs I'm always stuck next to a pa thats always blwing down my ear might give it a go..

Re: Earplugs?

I don't use them... but I've been looking around more and more for a viable option. I don't wanna spend huge amounts of cash on plugs, but the little foam tings don't cut the mustard either!

Re: Earplugs?

I normaly won't wear them. I don't run my wedges very loud at all and when I can my rig is off stage so it's not right behind me. But places like Hard Rock here in Memphis I do cause everything is packed tight on their small stage.

Re: Earplugs?

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

The Who was one of the all time loudest rock bands....I believe Pete has suffered ear damage, I thought I had heard or read that someplace.

Re: Earplugs?

The Who rocker Pete Townshend is losing his hearing, and fears the disability will end his songwriting career. The musician, 60, blames his own brand of loud rock music for his increasing deafness, and is terrified the damage is irreversible.

But the guitarist is determined to create as much new music as possible, while he still can.

Townsend says, "I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal proponents deaf.

"This is a tour that rather depends on me writing new songs. The process has taken a long time. I've spoken about the problem of cracking the right material, but there is something else.

"I have terrible hearing trouble. Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it can not be repaired

It changes the sound b/c your ears can't handle the sound pressure from the loud volumes so they naturally distort the sound like an overdriven speaker.  The foam plugs are super dense to so they make the sound muffled.  It depends on where I wear them, more often then not I should, but you just can't hear yourself in a live band sometimes.  In the house when I'm cranked up I play from 2 rooms over so its not so bad lol.  You can get some nice custom one from an audiologist, the ones the pros use, for about $160 or so.  I want to make that appt. b/e they say that it doesn't change the tone, it just drops the decibals while remaining crystal clear.

Re: Earplugs?

Right now I don't use them. I probably should, but I love loud music so I guess I'm doomed. Call me crazy, but I absolutely love the feeling after a loud concert (but not TOO loud... that just hurts lol ) that's what makes me feel like "hey I was THERE". Like I said, it's probably crazy and I'll most likely go deaf before 30 lol but I don't wear them.

Re: Earplugs?

I don't use earplugs now but I'm going to let me build some good ones ( not these 0.95$ ones ), and they'll just have a small damping amount ~ 5dB...

Re: Earplugs?

Well, if I'm going to a show I'll put them on some times to save my ears but it sounds better without as I use cheap ones... So most of the time no, but some times yes. Maybe the expensive ones are better

Re: Earplugs?

Good feedback so far.

I don't get caught dead at a show without something shoved in my ears... i've even used toilet paper once!
I don't think $160 is a poor investment for the only pair of ears you'll ever have.

Re: Earplugs?

I've heard that the pro's find when they use in-ear monitors it reduces the sound levels from the stage, so it protects their ears and makes them hear everyone better. Two birds with one stone as they say

Re: Earplugs?

my ears are shot, - years of loud gigs before we knew about the damage and riding a motorbike without ear plugs from the age of 16. I have constant ringing in my ears which is more noticeable when I do put in ear plugs (for riding the bike). I have some custom molded ones for that but the disposable ones that you can get from bike shops do the job as well. I did put disposable ear plugs in the kids ears for Joe's show at Guilfest part way through the show, - the sound got louder through the set, started off quite low and the bass was booming but they got it sorted.

My YouTube channel with plenty of my Joe's videos dating from 2009 inc his first Hammersmith Odeon ones:

Re: Earplugs?

I want to add a couple of things.  One is Pete Townshed is said to believe he lost his hearing during an accident on the Smothers Brothers TV show.  Basically a rodie packed keith moons bass drum with C4 to blow it up after their song.  pete didn't think it was enough so he put double the amount in.  When the kit blew up it blew out Petes left ear drum instantly from the volume and pressure aimed right at his head.  He also sustained 2nd degree burns and cuts from debris hitting him.  Look it up on youtube.

Next Ear plugs are a good thing, but I judge when I use them at sound checks.  Also anything loud other then music I wear them.  Why blow my ears out listening to a lawn mower.  My biggest problem isn't tone with ear plugs its the fact that I can't hear all the parts clearly so if were in the middle of a solo I end up missing ques from our playing that I would normally nail pretty easy.  I've read that they have custom built ear plugs now that they mold to the shape of your ear, and they claim that they can block out higher dB's while lower ones like say a human voice talking is left alone.  So you could be at a Joe B show and hear all the people around you clear as a bell and Joe would sound muffled to you.  LOL I don't know that to be true but I do know that stuff like that is expensive.

Re: Earplugs?

I wear earplugs when I go to concerts, all the time. I have invested in very good ones and I think the sound is much more defined than without them - at least I have experienced this at very loud concerts.

For rehearsing with my bluesband I don't wear them as we rehearse at low volume. But if it get louder, reheasring with a rock or metal band, I wear them constantly.

Actually, wearing earplugs was what my father expected from me, before he gave his consent to buying my first guitar. Wise man!

Re: Earplugs?

I've got a pair of alpine plugs which cost around £20.  Thinking of taking the next step up and getting some custom fitted plugs, quite a bit of money thou.  In some cases I've found the plugs actually help the sound.  In some venues it is soo loud it distorts in my ears, with the plugs I can hear things comfortably and it's always nice not to have the high pitched ringing in my ears after a gig.
