Re: Guilfest - anybody going ?
Thank you so much for taking the video Ian. I was there last night at Guilfest and was lucky enough to be at the front too. A brilliant show.

Thank you so much for taking the video Ian. I was there last night at Guilfest and was lucky enough to be at the front too. A brilliant show.
Manage to see Joe at Guilfest; but only got to see him play for a half an hour; more or less mess up on timing, really thought Joe would have been on stage at about 9pm or 9:30 at the latest, plus I was really raining hard when Joe came on stage and I had to catch a train back to london.
But from what I saw Joe put on great show;
littlekonkie wrote:Joe used the Music Man John Petrucci barritone guitar on John Henry but didn't have the theramin.
The encore was India/ Mountain Time.
Not the usual amp set up - 2 x marshalls and it looked like only 3 guitars used (Music Man, JBLP and gold top).
A really relaxed performance with teriffic interaction between Joe and Carmine.
The festival programme also caried an advert for the autumn UK tour and the release date for the Albert Hall DVD......September 28th 2009.
thanks, yes that was it, pearl red burst

There were 3 guitars used, - but not 100% convinced that the LP's were both not JB's sig, - as both had the two colour knobs, - 2 banks of 2 and I think the original LP gold top has all knobs in the same colour? - One of the LP's had a white pick guard the other black. I did take a couple of pictures which I have not looked at yet on the PC so if the quality is any good I will post them up.
I doubt the color was pearl red burst as Joe plays a baritone John Petrucci Ball Family Reserve on The Ballad of John Henry. I believe he has several colors of it, so you likely saw the Ruby Red Burst version of this one:

The Les Pauls are likely his Signature Prototype (if he is using it onstage) or a '59 Gold top and / or one of serial #001? 002 or 003 where he went into the black or was it out of the black? Oh well, Into the blues!

P.S. Ian tell your son Joe walks around on the sound check for Sunshine of your Love to test the RF telemetry and echo / reverb patterns he actually hears coming back to his ears
Rocket wrote:I don't know how anyone could resist Brian Wilson OR Joe Bonamassa... Same night??? Dang.... No anti-Brian backwash or backhanded stabs, please. The man is amazing and everyone should see him and his band in their lifetime...And of course, I feel the same about Joe Bonamassa and HIS band too... Both are very fun and very entertaining... 33% want to see Brian, 23% want to see Joe, another 23% want a little of both according to the Guilfest forum survey...
Hint: This is terribly hard, but both shows have the ability to get better as "the end is near" and luckily, the entire shows are great and start off fantastic immediately. If you want to really enjoy Brian catch the end when he's likely to do a medley, but those may be the hits you feel you can catch on radio or recording anytime, but be warned, it is far, far different in person, MUCH more impact than a happy go lucky surf songfest...I'd catch Joe beginning and Brian ending, or vice-versa !!!
Rock On, Keep the Faith, the sounds of the city seem to disappear, I'd better Stop , before I tear Y'all apart
I'd better Stop , before I go and a break YOUR heart
Oh whoa , I'd better stopRocket Out
Rocket - you'll understand why I never got tickets for Guilfest when I heard who would be on the main stage while Joe was playing. Two of my biggest music heroes at the same fest but playing at the same time is just too much to figure. I know time and substances have left Brian a shadow of what he once was but his music has touched my life and fair play to him for battling on through all that and getting out on the road again. Brian is a musical genius, and my choice between he and Joe at Guilfest may just have been influenced by the time I've spent in the surf in Cornwall over the last week (Ok - it's not quite California, but it's the nearest thing we have! But perhaps the Surfari's "Wipeout" would be a better soundtrack to my week? )
So come on Gary - please can we have a review from you of Joe's set?
Ian
Brian is not just a shoddy shadow of what he used to be, THAT is the story of Brian Wilson here & now. He has his act together and his crack orchestral troupe are dynamite to say the least. Brian has, thanks to lifestyle changes, therapy, medication, and most of all, love, been able to be what he never was before-front & center stage and comfortable. He still has an occasional onset of panic attacks but he has a physiologist masseuse help that aspect. Musically, he is buoyant and entertaining and "the boss". Genius is an understatement. His mind is razor sharp and his wit isn't dull. He rocks. His voice is still great, really... Brian knows the score , musical and about himself and he can even laugh at himself and his frailties...a quite heartwarming individual SMILE!
Rock On & Keep the Faith (It brought Brian back),

A paper there sucked at interviewing him... here's a good one from a few years back:

I also made it to Guilfest. There was no choice for me - Brian Wilson may be the history but Joe is definitly more of the future.
I thought it was a great set - no acoustic numbers and a slightly shorter set (due to curfew times at the festival) but some great renditions of some of the more rockier stuff. Joe and the band looked really relaxed and certianly seemed to be enjoying it. The crowd was pretty big as far as I could tell - it was a shame that Joe's set combined with the festival's headline act though - I'm sure this meant that some missed Joe as a result.
Unfortunately it also chucked it down - I don't think I ever felt as wet - but well worth it anyway!
Loved this footage.
It sure was wazzin' it down !!
No Theramin !
I would have really missed that.
thanks for your feedback and help guys, - great friendly forum this, should have joined a long time ago.
Hey Ian
Greetings from another Ian.
Great footage there, and the sound quality is pretty good too. Joe and the guys looked much more relaxed than when I last saw them, but that was at the RAH.
Sorry you had to put up with the rain, but by the sound of your review it was worth it.
Seems even Brian couldn't work his magic with the weather this time. (Remember Glastonbury a couple of years back when the rainclouds parted and the sun appeared?)
Tell your son to treasure that pick - you never know what might rub off
Ian
Thanks for the review and the videos Ian and welcome to the forum.
I've heard some emails read out on Planet Rock from people who were there and they were, naturally, all very impressed.
Fortunately we can always rely on Joe and the band to give a brilliant performance.....pity we can't rely on the great British summer weather
Tripsy
just seen that my video made it to JB TV
