Topic: Tennis - Grand Slams

I am SO looking forward to the final of Roland Garros this afternoon! Roger Federer is without doubt one of the all-time greats and this is the only GS tournament he hasn't won. A win today will tie him with Pete Sampras on 14 GS wins.

15-love, over and out...... wink

And he's done it. big_smile cool

If he isn't the greatest player of all time now, then he's awfully close. Wonderful emotions from Roger during his national anthem and great to see Agassi there to hand him the trophy...by all accounts Roger is an all round good guy too, a real mensch.

Deep respect for this great sportsman!

At's right Hammer...if a fellow that age can be a mensch, he's got it.  All I have to watch today is NBA Finals.

Defending champion Nadal misses Wimbledon, which means that the Brits have their best chance of a finalist in the last 80 years or so. A Federer - Murray final looks pretty likely.

Andy Murray had a long and difficult match last night, but he came through it. The question is, can sustain the level required to reach the final ? Has last night's match taken it's toll ?

I sure hope so, 'cos I don't like him. big_smile

I think that whoever (Murray or Roddick) gets to the final has no chance with Federer in his current form. wink

The ladies final looks odds on to be between the Williams sisters. I hope that Venus wins, as she at least looks like a woman and not like a pumped up, bulked up hulk.

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

Andy Murray certainly had to fight quite a battle last night, it was a very close match. He did really well to come back after being three games down in the final set.
I am disappointed that Nadal isn't playing at Wimbledon this year. Last year's final was very exciting and I was delighted when Nadal won.
I think Andy Murray has a chance of getting to the final but will he beat Federer........mmmmm I don't know but I want to see him try.
Good luck Andy Murray..........may the best man win!

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

Watching the Andy Roddick - Lleyton Hewitt Quarter Final Live from Wimbledon and looks like Andy Roddick will edge this one at 2 sets to 1 up but it's level at 2 -2 in the fourth set

Roger Federer to Beat Andy Roddick in the final is my guess

Roddick won and  what a great match!!

But it doesn't really matter as long as Federer wins the title!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

I'd love to see Murray win. The English have been banging on about how long an Englishman has not won Wimbledon, so I'd love to see a Scot do so instead! big_smile

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

Commiserations to the Scots (and others) supporting Murray. Roddick was just too good today - his serve was like a cannonball and Murray was never able to come to grips with it.

It should be a wonderful final, with Federer winning in less than five sets.

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

If Fed wins he breaks Sampras record and also edges ahead of Tiger Woods in majors won.

Will he be considered the greatest ever??? He has losing records against Nadal and Murray, neither of whom he needed to face in the French and now Wimbledon........

Wow what an amazing Mens Single Final from Wimbledon , seeing Roger Federer edge out Andy Roddick in an epic 5 setter  5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6 and get this 15 -13 in the last set over 4 hours and a Quarter long, Roger Federer now breaks the all time record of 15 major grand slam wins, that last set was fantastic live sport, fit atheltes dont even come into it , they're bionic, feel so sorry for Andy Roddick as he put his all into it making it a memorable final.
Gonna get some dinner now and a cool drink

You can say that again! A truly EPIC final set, during which I found myself quietly hoping that Roddick would win (I'm a long standing Federer fan). Andy played the match of his life, and that wasn't good enough against a Federer far removed from his best form - which just goes to show what a great champion Roger is!

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

I've never seen such an epic final before! I too felt a little sorry for Andy Roddick, so many times it looked like he could win. All credit to Roger Federer though, what a cool customer he is.
When you think that Roddick hasn't won a major tournament since 2003 I think it's fair to say he should be very proud of himself today and I wouldn't be surprised to see him back next year for another shot.

A truly great match and I like the way that Roddick jokingly apologised to Pete Sampras for not stopping Federer from beating his record. Great sportsmanship all round.

Re: Tennis - Grand Slams

It was a staggering 16-14, not 15-13..... Roddick having to serve from behind a whopping 9 times after levelling at 6-6. Both players played to win not to play it safe, a scintillating  display of shotmaking and going for it. Roddick was not simply serve today, he was pummeling the ball from all over the court. What a display.....

No one can deny that Roger earned the record.

I had to work today and I'm sorry I missed the final. Sounds like it was a great match and on the level of the McEnroe/Borg matches, minus the whining of course. wink
