Topic: I'm confused

I just bought a Line 6 dl4 and have a few questions.

1. Why is it so quiet the second I turn it on? It takes away 80% of my volume when I turn it on.

2. I've been trying to get the "Pain and Sorrow" string swells and it just won't do it. I've gone to the owner's book and seen those settings and it still won't work.

Sorry for what might be stupid questions... I'm new tho the pedal thing.

Re: I'm confused

Those are some cool units, I just wish they weren't so BIG.  I heard that the older ones had reliablity issues too and at $250 a pedal that always scared me away.  I think they sound great and the "Pain and Sorrow" swells are amazing.  Can I request some clips of that pedal used in that fashion?  Also, let me know how they hold up.  I might get one for my smaller board tongue .

Re: I'm confused

Yeah I will post one tomorrow when I can play LOUD. The string swells are just as you expect them to be.... joe wasn't doing anything secret. The backwards solo thing has me hooked right now.

Here's the demo... just a couple of the things you can do.

I always thought Joe did that with the help of the guitar's volume knob.

He does for solos, but the Pain and Sorrow intro was with this pedal

Re: I'm confused

Sounds to me like a pretty versitle delay pedal!  I liked the reverse delay although there really seemed to be a significant difference between the time the note is sounded and reversed.  It would definately play with my timing lol.  So you can program 4 presets?  If so I would probably have the presets be Tape echo (or Analog +modulation), Auto Swell, Reverse, and Loop.  Can you mix more than one preset at the same time?  I would hate to have to have more than one delay on my board just to add an echo to the swell effect... Thanks in advance and cool demo! cool

My tone happy friend said it made a /massive/ difference to the pedal! cool

I'll have to see!

Re: I'm confused

I also want to buy one, but here in Germany I have to pay ~350€ -that're ~500$!- for it, so I'll wait some time...

Thanks for that info! I probably will take advantage of this in the future when we hit the studio... that could be a while so I'll keep this in mind. Thanks!!

SPG: I have three sets right now. Line B... Line C... and Line A you can set with the controls so when you switch back it is that setting, but I don't believe you can preset A to a specific setting... does that make sense? The loop is not a preset you can do, because you use channels A and B to make it work.  You can't do two presets at the same time, but setting for the Auto Volume swells is labeled "Auto Volume Echo" so it has echo already... especially if you work some reverb from the amp in. Just a heads up.

I might post a longer video explaining the whole thing when I get my equipment home. It really is a great pedal.

Re: I'm confused

Nice demo. I once had this pedal too and I liked the effects a lot.
But for some reason it affects the sound noticable in bypass mode.
No matter you have it in the loop or in front of the amp. This was the main reason I sold it.
I had the same problem that the volume dropped when you kick in the delay.
I remember solving that by changing a preset over the buttons (can't recall perfectly now) hmm
How have you solved that?

I haven't had it long so I really haven't gotten into that yet, but I don't notice much of a problem at all. I ran through the set with my band today and was very happy with my new pedal... didn't have any problems. BTW, loop mode is very helpful for making songs (riff then chords then drum beats etc...)

I didn't know that -- thanks for that info.
I was eyeing the DL4 quite some time back but the reliability problems (as documented in countless HC reviews) and the insanely high price here in Europe made me decide against it.

Re: I'm confused

I have one of these as well it has some really great effects but I haven't been able to find away around the volume problem so it now sits on my old board. I have switched to a Vox Tonelab SE. I don't use any of the amp sims I just use the effects its a lot easier, smaller and quiter than my old board. I really do want to add another delay will see what happens.

Re: I'm confused

This may sound like a dumb question but is the volume drop an issue if you leave the pedal on all the time?  Also, how dramatic is the drop?  I can't imagine such a popular pedal being unusable due to a dramatic flaw.  Those $110 mods from Keeley seem a bit steep, are there any other modders that offer this fix cheaper?  Any responses from DL4 users would be great.  Thanks in advance!

Re: I'm confused

Its only when the Delay is on and I would say about a 25% drop in volume. Yea I am not sure how other people get around this issue.

I can tell you I have a similar problem with the delay in my tonelab as well however its not nearly as bad maybe 10% of a volume drop. I figure I need to play with the settings but haven't had time to do that with the tonelab.

As for the line 6 I dont' know anyone else who does the mods. I am going to bring it into my pratice room to use the loop mode on it for working on songs so it is still a very useful pedal.

Re: I'm confused

So far for me... the volume has not bothered me. There is a noticeable drop, but not enough to turn me off from the pedal. For me, the benefits outweigh the problem. I've just turned up the rig a bit.... my Blues Driver helps a lot for me. I'd try it out in a store before you buy with this one... there seems to be a difference in opinion. With the style of music my band plays I love the effects.... the string swell added a lot to our best song and the various delays are going to come in handy for the rest of the set so I have no regrets about getting it, but it may not work for you.
