Topic: Fender (oops) '65 Princeton RI

Hi

I'm guessing somebody on here will have tried one of these. Any thoughts about them?? I know it's hard to ask that and ask not to consider the price say in comparison to what you can get a 70s silverface one for. But for us in the UK Fender amps are not as plentiful, a bit like Marshalls in the US i guess.  So UK examples of old Princetons command high prices. Ideally I'd go for the Headstong clone but by the time it gets to the UK it would be twice the price of the Fender RI one.

The other option is to self build a MOJO kit I suppose.

Thoughts??

Pete

I play occasionally with a guy who has a 64 Princeton Reverb. We took it to a Fender dealer and played it against the reissues. We actually liked the Deluxe Reverb reissue better, and te Princeton just as much.I wouldn't hesitate to own one.

Re: Fender (oops) '65 Princeton RI

The new Princeton Reissues sound very good!  For the SRV tone in a bedroom package this amp would be my first choice.  It just loves Strats and Teles.  The reverb is nice, and it has decent headroom for such a small amp.  But the real reason people play them is for the overdrive.  The reissues break up pretty well around 5-6 for single coils and 3-4 with humbuckers.  Joe has said that the old Princeton's were his favorite Fender amps.  If you were in the US, I would say for $800+ to go for a beat up vintage Blackface or clean Silverface (PTP, better parts, handwired, etc) over the reissue.  But if they are expensive across the pond then you can't go wrong with the reissue.
