Topic: Govt. Mule anybody???

Not sure these guys have been mentioned but Warren Haynes wrote 'If Heartaches Were Nickels', has been voted top dog by one of the guitar mags and is also a member of the Alman Brothers (alongside the amazing Derek Trucks) and the Grateful Dead...Warren is Mr Music as far as I am concerned and I'm sure JB is a big fan. Going to see Govt. Mule is like going to see the Black Crowes or Phish or Dave Matthews Band. Lots of suprises, long drawn out jams and eccentric covers...a joy to behold!

I give you 'Thorazine Shuffle' because it has the best groove I've heard for years.

Here ya go...

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

I saw them 1 1/2 years ago and I didn't like them.
It was a very unarticulated and hooming sound, most of their pkayed songs sounded equally etc.
"long drawn out jams"?! I can only remind short solos and endless heavy power chord changes...

Only my opinion, but I am not goin to see them again next time.

They are great...and their albums are just fantastic.  The Deepest End Live is just amazing.  Anyone who doesn't like the Banks of the Deep End or Beautifully Broken has no soul.  Can't wait to see um again.

No matter how well you know someone, you can only ever guess.  How can you ever really know somebody else? It takes more than a lifetime just to get to know yourself.  Nobody knows the meaning of loneliness.  - Van Morrison

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

I still need to see them. I love Warren's voice and guitar playing.

"Soulshine" is just fantastic... does anybody know who sang with Warren on that?

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

One of my all-time favorites. Live at Roseland Ballroom rocks my world. I still like them, but their power-trio days with Allen Woody were best IMO. I was disappointed with High & Mighty and Mighty High, but everything before that was strong.

I think my favorites are Roseland, Dose, Gov't Mule and Life Before Insanity.

Neat feature available on their muletracks website. You can download the show you've just attended (or any other show), including cover art from the venue. Great marketing and a nice revenue stream too.

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

My brother turned me on to these guys - didn't quite know how to take them the first time I saw them, but decided to try again, and boy am I glad I did.  These guys are something special to watch.  I was lucky enough to be at the Halloween show last fall when they did the Pink Floyd set, and even though I am not a huge Floyd fan they blew me away.  JBJHJM, they are definitely worth a second look.

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

i love gov´t mule. saw them only once here in germany but it was one of the best concerts i have ever been. warren haynes vocals are fantastic and so is his guitar playing. a damn good band that comes to europe very very seldom.  send them over a little bit for us.

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

Good to see a lot of people like 'em. Funny enough, my fave album IS High and Mighty. Love 'Little Toy Brain' and 'New World Blues'. Also love the fact that so many quality bootlegs come out that are endorsed by the band. Great stuff. smile

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

I love mule.  saw them for the first time in 07, seeing them again later this summer.  Took me awhile to get into them like a lot of people here, but I am really glad I did.  Worried down with the blues is my favorite song by them, but i love a lot of them.  I have around 4 or 500 hundred tracks by them on my computer.  i rarely listen to the studio albums, but of them the deep end ones are my favs.  I love the band what they are all about and love warren haynes.

I don't know who that was singing with him on the original mule studio recording of soulshine, i think it may be oteil burbridge, but honestly i didn't really like it.  i mean i like the song, but i like it best when warren sings it all the way through.  it was originally recorded by the allman brothers  with gregg singing and in my opinion he really butchers it.  warren's voice is just perfect for it.

well, this, isn't really an opinion (excepting the i didn't like them part), more a gross misrepresentation of fact.  If you or anyone can find me 5 songs (and they've played probably in the ball park of 500+ different songs live) by mule to back that up, let alone a ful 15-20 song concerts worth, i will mail you a hundred dollars.  You must have been bombed out drunk, not really paying attention, or never seen them to think that it was short solos and power chords.  You don't have to like the band, but that description is just flatout wrong and blatantly inaccurate and if you tell it to people you are telling them a lie.

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

Love the Mule. I have seen them live 3 times - great live band, they are always throwing interesting covers into their live shows like; Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Cortez the Killer, 30 Days in the Hole - tons of Zep tunes as well.

I agree with another poster that the last 2 albums were weaker (still good).

This is worried down with the blues, my favorite song by mule, and it seems to be lesser known.  I have hosted it on youtube to share it with the people on this site as I think pretty much everyone here will enjoy the song, so if you have time give it a listen wink

Just got to love the Mule, they´re one of the best bands out there right now IMO - my all-time favourite is "Soulshine", it´s just one of these tunes that pull you out of every misery and make you smile wether you´re sad, happy or ... - whatever mood you might be in, doesn´t matter - this song opens your heart.
I tried to make a compilation "Best of Gov´t Mule" and completely failed, because the ammount of great songs is just too big. "Worried down with the Blues" is one of them, but also their version of "Jesus just left Chicago", "Lay of the Sunflower", "Sad and deep as you", "Thorazine Shuffle" .... ah, no end in sight. wink
Mule rocks!

Re: Govt. Mule anybody???

wtf is up with you guy?!? Mr Superhero, guardian of the greatest band anywhere?!
Thats what I mainly remember from my only Gov't Mule concert, maybe they just had a bad luck day, but all peoples I knew who where there were mostly disappointed. Oh and I was NOT drunk, and I am able to listen very careful and attentive.
And now shut up and THINK of what you write down next time *before you click the submit button*!

And additionally if I tell you something about short solos and endless power chords that's definately my opinion! You may find them long and great...

samjp4, maybe I'll give 'em a second chance...

Had you said they had a bad night, or you just didn't like the music, I wouldn't have said anything in response.  what you said was it was all power chords and short solos.  This is incredibly misleading to someone unfamiliar with than band.

Let me put it to you like this, it is no different than if someone said the exact same thing about joe bonamassa.  He has had off nights, i have heard a lot of live shows from him and though some are certainly better than others, never does he just out of nowhere have an entirely different sound.  When he has an off night he isn't suddenly just playing all power chords.

I have heard in the neighborhood of 50+ live shows from them and never once heard them do this, so until you can prove otherwise, I am going to contend that it's BS.

And yeah, I am going to defend any band I like and want to spread the word about when someone gets on here and starts misleading people about what they do.

That's ok. Just wanted to defend myself a bit.
Just one thing - I told that for ME and the other guys who were there with me it was all power chords and short solos.
Then I only wanna say that the location and the luck was bad wink

P.S.: When I listened to them on YT I also thought they're great, so that show was a real disappointment for me. If they play at another place I'm going to see them again...

well, i saw gov't mule again last night.  although it was not just power chords, they definitely had an off night.  show was ok, significantly worse than the last time i saw them though.  hearts just weren't really in it in the same way.  or maybe it was just a bad setlist.
