Topic: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

Just back from the most wonderful weekend away – and so soon after the RAH trip – lucky me -  ‘cause it doesn’t get much better than this!

A small, comfortable setting on the lawn behind a swimming pool, always enough room to get to the front of the stage if you wanted to despite there being around 1000 in attendance, friendly people, good beer, bratwurst, fantastic weather and several musical surprises. And Joe!

(I’ll be posting separately in Other artists about the ‘surprises’ and I’ll be adding photo links here when I get around to them.)

Andre, Marco and I arrived at the site Saturday afternoon to discover that our Eva was the merchandising assistant! Hugs and kisses all round. We then found Andre’s friends Rudi and Johan and, as regularly happens to me before shows, ran into Carmine and Rick doing their usual site reconnoiter. Met Bogie and Joe and Warren too before settling down to await the entertainment.

Wolf Mail from Canada opened the show. All I can honestly say is that nothing that I heard grabbed my attention or generated any interest. Like most people, I was concentrating on beer and safely grabbing rays at this point.

Henrik Freischlager’s Five Live clearly had a big local following, as the crowd was immediately up for this band who had a great sax player along with the standard four piece. These boys certainly had something, though again I must confess that they didn’t grab my undivided attention.

Dana Fuchs cool grabbed my attention – and held it – big time! Much more about her in the topic of her name. I was lucky enough to find out that Joe was going to join her band for one number and was able to get into a decent position to film all 15 minutes of Joe jamming with Dana!! I will post a link to the clip just as soon as I get it up somewhere (I can’t just send it as it’s over 300 Mb!)

Then it was time for the main attraction, the crowd now tightly packed. As always, the first chords of TBOJH floated towards us with Joe still out of sight, then I got whammied as Joe appeared with a gleaming red double-neck monster that I hadn’t seen before.

The first show after the RAH, one in such totally different surroundings, was always going to be, er, very different. So it proved – back to the standard shorter set, open air acoustics (though the sound was generally excellent!), Joe with very light shades that he never took off (yes, snappy suit). Of course I loved it, because I love the man and his music – but my previous nine shows included shows that I have loved more. Fair ‘nuff?

We got to hang with the guys afterwards, Joe signed some stuff for me and kindly gave me a pick, had an excellent talk with Roy too – but before we knew it, Warren was rounding everyone up for the 10 hour bus ride to Munich. I told them, ‘till August, or sooner’.

We got messed up in a one way detour going back home to Andre’s and eventually got to bed at 3 am. (Marco and I spent the night at Andre’s in Holland – the festival was not far over the border in Germany.)

The second day started earlier and the sun was even warmer. I wore a hat on the nurse’s orders. It felt kind of strange being there to see other bands without a Joe climax at the end, and even though I was really looking forward to seeing Michael Burks, I didn’t know what to expect from the day’s entertainment.

Khalif ‘Wailin’ Walter from Chicago started proceedings. A journeyman guitarist who had to play to around 100 people, so for one number he took his mic stand with him right into the ‘crowd’, and stood there singing and playing. He was ok, but nothing in any way special.

Layla Zoe cool from Canada was the first surprise. A small, feisty lady with tattoos on her arms and legs and a voice that cannot help but make you think of Janis – but then without that extra whisky croak.  She was the only performer to come out for two encores. Let me tell you, this little lady can sing and I strongly urge you to check her out and support her (she’s an independent artist). I’ll be starting a topic for her downstairs as soon as I get to it.

Next we had the Van Wilks Trio from Texas. Now Van’s been playing for years and has learned some pretty fancy finger movements around his guitar. He wasn’t offensive, but he just didn’t have it more me – Andre and I agreed that he just didn’t have ‘the tone’. He was also on a hiding to nothing having to play after Layla, who had really wowed the crowd and got everybody going. Van Wilks was unable to keep the crowd going.

Beth Hart. Wow, what can I say? She’s like a contemporary, foul-mouthed Joni Mitchell on speed. She has some very funny lines, but she also says a lot that would be impossible to say in front of a family audience – which means that I cannot share her funniest lines with you here. She was interesting, she has a hell of a voice, but I thought that she was kind of out of place at a ‘blues festival’. The crowd liked her, but not as much as they had liked Layla Zoe.

The sun had gone down, but it wasn’t completely dark yet when the day’s headliner took the stage.

Michael ‘Iron man’ Burks cool cool came out and grabbed the audience by the throat from the first notes he played. I will do my fulsome gushing in the topic with his name. All I’ll say now is that the very vast majority of the audience were seeing him for the first time, as were all of us in our group. I can only compare the impact he made on this audience by reminding y’all of your Bonabaptisms. There is no musical experience more wonderful than being unexpectedly completely blown away. Michael Burks made himself a lot of new fans Sunday night.

We drove back to Holland in silence, avoiding the detour horror. There was nothing we wanted to hear just then. Marco decided that he’d rather drive through the night than spend another night listening to me snore, so he left and Andre and I went to bed with smiles.

Make sure to check Marco’s site for the first, excellent pictures of this festival - http://www.bluesmagazine.nl/

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

Thanks for the review George! cool

Schöppingen was a very cool festival indeed ... I only wish I could have been there for Beth Hart and Michael Burks as well on Sunday (hope you recorded "Empty Promises" George!).

I´ll have to gush about Dana in an extra topic, she just rocks. Loved the song she did with Joe as well as her excellent cover versions of songs like "Helter Skelter" or "I´d rather go blind" ... she has a voice quite like Janis, though I hate to make comparisons like that ... she sings and screams her heart out on stage - she´s really a "must-see". I hope George can send me the video of her and Joe, I promised to put it on youtube then. More about Dana in "Other Artists" ....

Henrik Freischlader´s 5Live project was also pretty good, jazzy at times, very good band. His playing has improved so much since I last saw him opening up for Joe 2 or 3 years ago. I´ll check out the CD as well.

Joe and the guys entered the stage at about 10 and played one of the best shows they did during the Germany-run ... the open air atmosphere was great, the sound was good and there were a lot of these "click"-moments when you could feel that the audience was really connecting to the music ... I stood at the side directly in front of a speaker, but still the sound was great. Dana and Layla Zoe stood there too watching the show (+ rocking out!) and did have some of these "jaw-drop" moments we all know so well ... Can you say "Woke up dreaming"?! wink

I´ve got some pics as well and will put them up when I´m back home - today I´m off to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in Stuttgart - June continues just like May ended ... I like life! big_smile

Eva

P.S.: I have to agree that the Festival - atmosphere as a whole was very good - friendly people, good organisation, great bands - I´ll be there next year as well I hope!

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

Amsterhammer & Eva, these are such a great and detailed summaries, thanks so much for sharing them! Sounds really cool and exciting and it's obvious that you guys (and gals wink) had a great time. Also sounds like an easy-going and laid-back atmosphere at the festival and not a totally overrun event, which makes it even nicer.

Holy sh*te, Dana Fuchs. And Joe. Together on stage. You kill me. My Dad and I are still cursing us for not knowing earlier she was in Zwickau a few weeks ago. But this must have been a one-of-a-kind experience right there. Can't wait for the video. big_smile

Also interesting impressions of the other artists, might make me go check some of them out. smile

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

I won't write  such a long story because George did already and it could have been my story.

I agree with all  except Henri Freischlader .I thougt he and his  topband did a great show, I liked very much. The next day Layla Zoe performed but because of the costs she came over without band from Canada.
Henrik Freischlader and his band did the job and how.
They never met before. talked and practised for only 10-15 minutes and rocked the place down. Brilliant set! Together with Michael Burks the sensation/surprise of the second day.
Some weeks ago I advised all to come to Schoeppingen because it is such a nice, cosy festival and I'm glad George, Marco and Eva agreed totally, IT WAS A BLAST!
Compliments to Richard Hoelscher and his team of volunteers. Till next year and is the rest from the forum coming as well??
I must admit that the weather was the best I ever had on a festival and at in openair festival that's heaven.

Info news:
Henrik Freischlader is playing at the Rockpalast show in Cologne in July too. Joe is there of course and Robin Trower with jack Bruce. Henrik himself told me that. So all coming again please.

George has all my pictures from the festival so maybe he can put the best on the forum, please George.

Conclusion: One of the best festivals I've ever been to   thanks to :
The weather, the perfect organisation, the wonderful bands (Joe and Henrik I knew ofcourse before), all my friends, the backstage pass so I could talk and meet all those musicians I didn't know and they all were so friendly.

A very satisfied Andre Wittebroek with still a big smile on his face!

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

I forgot to tell that Michael Burks is coming to tour Holland in November.
Marco got the information yesterday, great surprise.
First Dutch tour in 4 years.
If possible: see him!!

Marco put GREAT GREAT pictures from the festival on his website www.bluesmagazine.nl

You  MUST see them!!!!!!!!!!!!

You understand now why Eric Clapton, Danny o'Bryant, Steve Winwood, Jack Bruce, Dana Fuchs and Joe himself love and sometimes use his pictures?
And Marco does all for hobby, no money involved but as I told him:
Isn't there a way to at least got the costs paid?
He deserves it. Just my opinion!

Andre is absolutely correct (and beat me to it by a few minutes)! Marco has a rare eye and talent for a great shot - there are some great pics to be seen in his slide show here -

Nice review. Thanks!
I can imagine how great it must have been.
I got a "Joe pick" too last time, handed by the man himself.
Hopefully I can see the festival in cologne too.
We bought a house and time and money is tight.. roll

George, Eva, I just stumbled on this review now, thank you very much for so much detail. Great that you got to hang out with Joe for a while and the festival sounds pretty good (better than the 1960s remains we get here...)

Hopefully some of those other acts will gte an invitation to the UK sometime.

Nice pics too

PS Danny o'Bryant - since when did Danny become Irish? lol

Another great review from  this festival, special for our German  friends ( it's in German) on:

www.bluesroad.de

Look at Konzertberichte, Bluesfestival Schoeppingen, post underneath the picture Layla Zoe and Sherandoe, Der Samstag (Saturday) , next message Der Sonntag (Sunday).

Great review Shen!! So we were not the only ones who were blown away about the festival!
All I speak  still are!

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

]Hi, new boy in town and a recent Joe convert after seeing him play at last year's Grolsch festival in Germany - will definately be going this year. In fact I've just paid €41 for 2 days of amazing blues - does it get any better?

I live in Germany but work in London during the week (it's a bit of a jackonary) however I'm trying to find some people who are maybe travelling over from the UK?

Last year I ended up sleeping on the railway station at Munster (not the best......), does anyone have the details for the camping ground? I hope I haven't left it too late!

Hi Greenguyyuk,

actually there's a thread for this year's Grolsch Blues Festival.
You'll find it here: http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=11926
You can register at the festival site for camping but you won't get a confirmation. Details regarding camping will follow.

35 days  lol

CU there

Re: Grolsch Blues Festival, Schoeppingen, Germany May 30-31

Dear Mike,

The camping ground is next to the festival. You should have no problem getting a spot.
When will you arrive, I can help you out if you want', just let me know. I'll be there both days, so we can have a nice bluesbeer for sure!

Richard Hoelscher from the festival did it again: a stunning line-up!!
