Topic: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

The following was found in this week's free Here magazine which is published in Novato as an "FYI" feature submitted by a staffer:

Nearly 17 years ago, a 25 year old Sausalito guitarist named Ronnie Montrose was in the midst of a musical comming-out party, wielding his guitar on tour with the Edgar Winter Group and tearing through sonn-to-be hits like "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride".

As Montrose saw it, he had an ace in the hole: a 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar he'd just bought from J. Geils for $800, an instrument he believed emitted an exquisite tone.

On Oct. 10, 1972, the guitar was stolen when the Edgar Winter Group performed at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass.

Montrose's guitar has been valued at as much as $500,000, according to Tiburon vintage guitar collector Michael Indelicato.

But now, after recognizing his Les Paul in a British guitar magazine, Montrose filed a lawsuit last week in U.S. District Court in Sand Francisco against Gary Moore, himself a famed guitarist from Belfast in Norther Ireland. In the complaint, Montrose claims that Moore has his stolen guitar and refuses to give it back.

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

he had enough with the "still got the blues" issue...just leave him alone.

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

Still Got The Blues issue? I didnt know there was one, its about the only CD of his that I still play every now and then. I thought it was pretty good. I have seen live 4 times now and he never delivered/impressed me. His recent tour (still running), was probably the worst. This has all been said before anyway.

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

i've seen videos and his performance is incredible. if you don't like him that's a different story, but the guy is a guitar god and now he is being accused of stealing a guitar (his most important one) and plagiarizing the mellody from S.G.T.B.

it seems there're some people who want to bother him... leave gary alone.

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

You missed the point totally. Never mind.

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

GM isn't being accused of stealing the guitar, he's being accused of not wanting to give back stolen property.

Seems like a total non-story to me.    If I were the judge I'd throw it out.

Has Montrose got a tour or something coming up?    Oh dear, am I being cynical?

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

Gary should give the guitar back, as simple as that.  He spends so much time in concert changing guitars for what essentially is the same sound on each that I don't think he'll miss it!

After "gaining" a guitar from Peter Green and then attempting to sell it recently on the sly, I don't think he'd find it difficult to get this one back and save himself the adverse publicity of yet another court case.

Pretty hard to listen so much better when it was so damn loud, most of what I could hear was reverb! neutral

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

i don't understand how you can't note the difference between a telecaster and a les paul...

Re: Gibson guitar at center of rock feud.....

Dissing the Moore? Foolish! The guy still has a lot of great guitar playing in him. Check out his live version of 'The Messiah Will Come Again' at Montreaux. Bloody loud yes, but controlled with beautiful vibrato and feel. Personally I never liked the 'Blues For You' album AND having met him at The Marquee in 1983 where he acted like a dick and sent a 'suit' to try and buy my Melody Maker, I realised it's not always good to meet one of your heroes! However, I won't hear him being pulled down without defending him.

Ronnie Montrose is also a top class player but I hope he has a pic of the serial number or he ain't gonna get far!

Yes of course there is a difference and for what it's worth he did sound better with the Les Paul, but the volume and the pointless solos did not impress. It was clear Gary was playing only for himself, yet an experienced musician should be able to pick up on audience reaction.  I got the impression many of his long term fans will not go to see him next time. It's no exaggeration to say that Joe Bonamassa and others have raised the standard of what people feel they are entitled to expect.

Of course Gary has made some great music, I like some of his rock albums like Run For Cover and of course his work with Thin Lizzy. His early blues albums like SGTB and Blues for Greeny provided me with an entry to the blues. I have previously defended him on this forum in the past, but having seen him live that has all changed.  His attitude towards his paying public, and fellow professionals defies belief and it's losing him fans.  I could elaborate, but I feel I'd be wasting my time doing so.

As for Ronnie Montrose, I'm not that familiar with his music, but I know his original band were highly influential on modern metal bands such as Iron Maiden who covered some of his songs. I hope there is a satisfactory resolution.
