Topic: Whirlwind Selector and the Lehle 1@3

Hi,

I've been helping my son Steve put together a rig similar to Joe's and we've been struggling with some of the finer details of setup. I was hoping someone out there might be able to help. Instead of starting with ALL of our 100 questions, I thought I'd go with just one at a time.

Does anyone know how the Whirlwind Selector and Lehle 1@3 are configured, both from a wiring-map point of view and the actual pedal settings? Steve has a Jub and a JB100 Cat 5 right now, and is using a Fender reissue EVH 5150 and a Marshall JCM 2000 on the other side; we'll be taking delivery of a JB100 Carol Ann in August. Steve really likes the EVH for the heavy blues/rock style he's into right now, so he'll probably stick with that as his 4th amp for the time being and sell the JCM. The amps are running through 2 Cat 5 cabs identical to those in Joe's rig...at least, the ones we saw him using in Buffalo and Syracuse a few months ago.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, a friend of ours is interested in getting into a 100W Silver Jubilee if anyone's looking to sell one.

The Whirlwind is a simple A/B/Both kind of pedal.  Joe runs his Jubilee into that, with the Both setting engaged.  Then, from the ouput of the Whirlwind, he runs that into the Lehle 1@3 for the alternate amps.  Sounds like a headache to me, that's why I went with the Voodoo Lab Amp Selector.  It does the exact same thing and more, with included grounding lifts and a tuner out.  Ben, aka Gotmule on here has the closest rig to Joe's and he uses one as well.  Check out what he does with his rig here:

Some more suggestions I just thought of for your son's rig...
When you get the Carol-Ann I would put a nice reverb and chorus through the effects loop to add some "width" to the sound as Joe describes.  He also runs this amp a little cleaner than his other lead type amps.  The Category 5 is a medium distorted sound more set for that old Billy Gibbons or Cream type distortion.  Joe has posted his Jubilee settings on multiple different threads here so with some research you could find them.  If your son is dead set on using the EVH 5150 III for his 3rd amp, then I would set that one up on the clean channel with the gain and volume pretty crankin'.  The clean channel on the 5150 III breaks up so nicely and is so articulate sounding.  I love the high gain crunch on the other channels but it's not really a Joe Bonamassa type sound.  Essentially the EVH would be filling the shoes of the Two Rock CRS or Van Weelden which are both very reverb drenched, midrangey type amps.  A nice reverb unit for this is also recommended.  I would work on one amp at a time because it can all get so overwhelming at times...

Thanks, Justin, I'm sure this will help. I may have gotten a little over ambitious, putting Steve in all of this gear, but he's a strong player and it keeps him off the streets! It's a lot more complicated than it looks. Thanks, too, for the links...we'll check 'em out this morning.
