Topic: Land of the Giants

Why is it that extremely tall people feel the need to be near the front at gigs?    Twisted Sister, Airbourne, Danko Jones, Saxon, The Answer, Iron Maiden, Tokyo Dragons to name but a few gigs where I had the interesting pleasure of finding a giant standing in front of me.   OK, Iron Maiden doesn't count because I was 10 years old.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a small man (5`10" or with international conversion 178cm) but even I struggle!!!!

Should venues have sloped floors?    Should tall people be penalised?    Like a fair ground ride in reverse you must be "under this height to enter"??

And before anyone says "you can move", this is just an observation of the people who move in front of you when a gig is under way.    I DO move.    I don't pay £20-£50 to watch someone's back for the night.

Re: Land of the Giants

I always liked the venues with sloping standing. Back in the day the Sundown chain were all converted cinemas with the seats ripped out. They installed a few raised semi-circular areas about halfway down in what would have been the 'stalls' and it really added to the atmosphere.

Saw many a band at the Mile End Sundown and at Edmonton in North London. If I recall I saw the Faces play a memorable set at Edmonton and it was a real sweatbox.

But I'll take an old sloping floor cinema anytime rather than suffering backache straining to see over giants, who, if they are not already there, insist of barging in front of you.

Apologies to any giants out there, but thats what it feels like to us Lilliputians under 6 foot.

By the way, how is the weather up there?;)

Hey Morgan

I was just there thinking "here's another nice guy joined the forum" and then you go and upset me.

I never intended to be six foot three.
I was actually 6' 4" at my tallest - constant attempts to shrink a little while feeling a little awkward standing near the front at gigs having taken their toll.
I have no control over my genetic make-up.

If you persist with this heightist attitude I shall have no alternative but to ask the moderators to close this thread lol lol lol

Joking apart - I do genuinley feel for those behind me at an all standing gig - to the extent I must look a little round shouldered - but hey, I have as much right as anyone else to a spot near the front.

Please be in no doubt that this is the REAL ME! Beware imposters........................

No worries my giant friend, its not as if I'm going around gigs with a switchblade cutting the achillies of all the tall people who get in my way

tongue

I don't want to upset anyone, its more an observation that taller people who have a definite advantage of being able to see over the heads of pretty much everyone at a gig will find themselves in a position to block others.     Everyone is free to be where they want at an unseated venue, but it can be unfair on younger people and smaller people.    I'm always happy to allow kids or shorter folk, who genuinely can't see from behind me, through to stand in a better location.   But I do tend to stand firmer when its a guy who can clearly see without being in front of me.

It would be great if all venues had sloping floors or areas where smaller people could get a better view.   But they don't.   So we all just have to get along like the glorious gig goers we all are.

Morgan

ps.....you were right, I am a nice guy and not at all size-ist.  cool

Re: Land of the Giants

Anybody behind you and me standing together would have no chance... Your 6' 4'' and I am 6' tall and 6' wide lol Seriously if its a standing only venue, get there early. I do and have always been up front.

Re: Land of the Giants

You have only one choice: to stand near the stage in the first row. So you avoid not only the tall guys but also - nearly more important for me - the talkative people.

Ah.....the talkative people.....those wonderful human beings who go to a gig and fight against the volume to have a conversation.

I really noticed it at Joe's gig in Glasgow, the background soundtrack of talking.     SHUT UP!!!!    I pay to hear Joe not you!

Re: Land of the Giants

Being about 5' 8" I can sympathise with this.
Good point from Martin though. Must admit this hadn't crossed my mind. Of course everyone has a right to be there early and get up close to the action.
Just one of those things I guess.

Problem is really with the di**heads who come late, barge their way to the front and cause a nuisance. So easy for fights to start.

The girl on the shoulders is also very annoying. That does deserve a backful of beer !!
Not that I would of course.
Far too polite.
