Topic: Another Young Blues Artist

I've seen this young man on youtube before. Recently he came up as a topic on a blog I frequent. The young man goes by the name of "Eddie Blue". He reminds me of a young Joe B.

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

i don't like artists who imitate SRV...don't care how old they are...

i hope this kid finds his own style instead of being as pathetic as John Mayer and Kenny Wayne ...

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

In the early days you have to show what you can do and doing SRV is a good way to show what you can do. Own style takes years to develope. Its all about exposure. The kid is good.

Yeah I'm hesitant to dismiss him over that myself. Take any song and perform it in a Texas Blues style, and add a strat with tonal qualities similar to SRV and suddenly your an "imitator." I do understand the comparison. I just don't understand why so many people seem to think that any artist who likes the SRV style/sound must be an imitator?

Frank Marino, and to a letter degree Robin Trower were often classified as Hendrix imitators back in the day. Also in earlier times any band with a vocalist who sang in the upper registers were supposedly imitating Robert Plant. Southern Rock bands were imitating Skynyrd. I guess I'm getting off topic and rambling with no point. Sorry!

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

He's not an imitator because he uses a stratocaster....

he's an imitator because he uses the all the same licks that vaughan played, with the same tone and sound.

Buddy Whittington is an excellent strat guitar player and doesn't copy SRV.

Joe Bonamassa clearly uses GM's licks in the songs "If Heartaches Were Nickels" and "The Great Flood", but he's not trying to imitate gary, he's just "borrowing" ideas from other artist in order to create something of his own. That's what should be done.

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

For the love of god he is 11 years old and good! Credit where credit is due.

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

I'm not saying he's not good or that he will spend his career trying to imitate SRV, but in that video he's doing it, and that cannot be dennied.

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

I started playing when i was 16 (now i'm 20).

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

Good for you keep it. I started when I was 43 and I am still 43;)

So what your actually saying is SRV was copying Hendrix? Red House is a Hendrix tune. Gary Moore did Hendrix too, so was he copying SRV or Hendrix? Are all the songs you play originals or covers? This is a 12 y/o kid who has a great talent. He will do well in spite of critics who can't see past their own nose. I'm sure with experience he will eventually develop his own sound and style.

If you can't say anything positive it's better to say nothing at all.

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

We should really all celebrate the fact that this youngster has been inspired to play the blues by artists such as SRV and Jimi Hendrix. I'm sure as he grows up he will develop his own style and who knows what he will achieve.
Good on him and good luck to him!

Re: Another Young Blues Artist

Good stuff! There's also a video of him doing Hideaway when he was 10!

We all must start somewhere. But John Mayer and Kenny Wayne are cool as hell.

John Mayer's songwriting is some of the best stuff in this generation. He has a turn of phrase that is just freakin' cool. In my opinion, he is offering something original. His guitar playing sounds a lot like SRV and Clapton to be sure but he drops it into some interesting, catchy, and very original-sounding songs. Listening to a song like Belief and it shows me he's one of the best artists of our generation. Also, his acoustic playing is very original. It has a very jazzy feel to it. You're not being original if you're playing SRV licks in SRV-sounding songs. John does not do this. SRV wouldn't have written and done 80% of the music that John does.
