Topic: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

Hi there,

What are your experiences with the Les Pauls produced for the Historic Collection? I am highly interested in 1957 Gold Top with Burstbuckers. i am looking for good quality and good tone for Blues and Rock. Has anyone of you owned one of them? I have heard that the necks should be pretty thick - is that true? I mean I have smaller hands, but usually thicker necks do not scare me away...

Re: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

Hi,

I owned 2003 goldtop model for 4 years. Its a very good LP.
The neck is pretty fat and the sound is rather woody and deep.
Leadwork is so sweet singing. Its got the burstbucker #1 and #2.
Also the slightly aged look is very cool.

I sold it after I tried the JBLP. It sounds more bitey and edgy with a tighter bottom end.
The sounds seem to come more quickly if this makes sense to you.
The '57 has a thicker neck. If you can try one do it. They are really worth the money.
I would have kept mine but needed to sell to finance the JBLP.

Re: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

After playing strats for over 20 years my R7 is what brought me over to the "dark side"..lol
It was almost 5 years old when I picked it up and that was by accident. I've done some mods to it to suite me better but it rings unplugged, sustains like crazy and I'll never get rid of it.
One of the mods I did was reshaping the neck to suite my hands better and it hasn't affected the tone at all. I probably didn't have to cause it was still easy to play but that's the way I am.
I've tried a lot of historics and they all sound a little different but are great guitars.

Stratovari, I wonder if you'd have replaced the BB 1 and 2 with the BB 2 and 3 if it would have made a difference because I have the 2 and 3 in a different guitar and there's more output and bite.
I replaced the pickups in my R7 with two custom wound pickups and they sound great as well.

Re: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

Slidewinder, yes I replaced the bursties to Staufer '57 PAFs (german PU maker).
Like the burstbucker very low output Pafs. I didn't like the #1 and #2 because they were
squealing at higher gain settings.
But the sound difference between the '57 and the JBLP is not only because of the different pus.
It was also very obvious when you play them unplugged.
The JB is much louder accoustically than the '57 and has more twang.
The '57 has a more warm sound. But as you mentioned, they are all different sounding
even within the same model series.

Re: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

Gibson Les Paul Historics are absolutely wonderful guitars!  They are a much different animal in build and tone than Gibson USA in my opinion.  I own a 2001 R8 with a nice chunky neck that adds to the tone in my opinion.  I find thicker necks a bit more comfortable.  The R7's I played were very comfortable as well.

Thank you for your replies so far, it all sounds pretty convincing! I really hope the neck measure is comfortable for me...have to check this at a shop, which is currently very difficult here in Germany with only a handful of Gibson dealers.... sad

Sure thing. English here!

"Jimi, ich weiss nicht wie weit du von Hannover entfernt wohnst

Translation:
Jimi, how far are you living from Hannover?
PPC (name of the music shop) recently had a '57 Goldtop there.

Hope this helps. wink

EDIT: Very funny translation in german btw. I love these online translators! tongue

Re: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

A '57 Historic is what made me decide that I couldn't have anything less.  I love goldtops man, and those R7's have the tone.  Everyone is pretty much on point here about the necks being thicker than most other LP's.  Either you love it, hate it, or get use to it.  Any Historic is a no brainer IMO if you have the money.  Good luck!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Your experience with Gibson CS Historic R7 Paulas

Thank for your input here folks! I shouldn't bother too much avout the neck until I have played a 57 GT.

@Gecko: Sure I know Tommys Music Shop. Not very far away from where I live. By the way, we should play that session we talked about. Just played a gig yesterday in Duisburg...let's plan a session in two-three weeks, if it's okay for you.

@Stratovari:
Hannover is about 2 hours away. I think for a good Paul I would also go to PPC in Hannover.
