Topic: God I suck...

We are after closing a medley I've put together in the key of E...

I majorly suck at guitar.. ok, im aware I can string a few notes together.. but I've been arguing for ages that I just can't pull off Hendrix. However, it has been suggested that Voodoo Chile is a great closer...

So.. I've put together the obligatory stupid picture montage and late night drunken recording sesh.. what do you all think? Please be honest.. (oh yeah! no wah pedal either!!)

Bearing in mind this is a Joe B forum.. I should warn you the tone on my guitar is straight thro my PC. Peavey Wolfgang EVH thro Line6 Gearbox, digital modelling makes me a sad panda!! It's the best I could do!

I don't think it's bad at all. I think your improvisation is good. That solo at the end seems to be a mix of Page and Moore's style...
You shouldn't be embarrassed, remember that every professional guitar player (even Joe) once played at your level (which is not low)...

I mean thanks man.. thats really nice of you to say.. I've just never really thought of myself as a good guitarist..

You did however name two of the biggest influences on my playing! So that kinda makes me feel good! haha!

you can be a great guitarist.....if your really want to. It's not easy, and it's not something you can achieve in a day, month, or year. You have to work hard for that...such as page, moore and bonamassa did.
stick to your influences, study them, and you will finally develop your own style...

Yeah Eva we do write, not got anything down on record yet though its all incredibly new. Most of those pics are of me in my old band.

Thanks for the confidence boost troops, makes me feel slightly less nervy about taking on Hendrix! neutral

I would say only play Voodoo Chile if you can nail it, make it your own, or make jaws drop playing it. People that cannot do these things get this roll

Greg dont worry , it was fine with me...I've heard Jimi play it much worse after digesting some blotter paper...dont ever let anyone hold you back or yop will never reach the next level, and the next and so on

The fact of making your own version of a song is something that comes after working a lot with your instrument, and that's when the process of developing your own stlye starts.
(sory if you don't understand my english, i never know if i'm writting well)

for example, i decided to record a blues based on hendrix's stlye, but i've also tried to put my own stlye (not so developed) so that the listener wouldn't think of it as an imitation...

The picture was taken one morning by Michael Lynch while I stayed at his home for the RAH show. Michael owns JB's signature Les Paul and it is serial number "005". So I'm holding one of only 300 guitars made in my pj's with bad hair and all. Michael can attest to how crappy I play. I played Tom Petty's "Free Falling" and I had to tell him what the tune was. Oh well, I hope I made you feel better. smile

Man, thats a really cool picture! I went through a bit phase of jonesing for a Les Paul, but I'm loving my EVH these days. Picked it up for peanuts and now I can't put it down!

I'm always a little bit worried about what other people think of my music, I think it's cos I'm one of those people that bottle everything up and playing a bit of guitar is like letting off the safety valve! I've not really been nervy about playing anything in a long time but when it's my own recorded stuff I freak out! haha

Maybe I'll work up the guts to post some more stuff soon heh

This was a project I did over a few weeks, the basic idea behind it was to get a repeating phrase and build on it. I really like the way the whole thing changes reflecting how I was feeling at the time. There is also a lovely riff I pinched smack in the middle of it! That was because I was learning it for the band and it kinda felt appropriate!

Just messing around over a backing track basically, realised I had nothing original recorded straight up blues. So I just grabbed a backing track and recorded a one take mess around 2nite mistakes and bum notes included!

i liked very much the first song... nice melody and changes. that's really good.

the blues is nice too, however i feel there should be more spaces, that's the key. i also don't find so appropiate using delay in that style (something i don't like from Joe Bonamassa or Eric Johnson when they play the blues).
