Topic: Metallica.....an evenings of firsts....and lasts

I’ll apologise in advance to any fans of metal or, in particular thrash metal. I don’t dislike the genre. I have listened and do still listen to the music. I marvel at the energy of it, the technical proficiency of the players, the complexity of the arrangements but…………and here it comes………….why, when its played live, does the sole objective appear to be to cause as much ear damage as possible within a 5 mile radius.

Last night was my first Metallica concert. It will also be my last Metallica concert. Because if, arguably, one of the best and founding fathers of the genre can’t or won’t provide a sound worthy of their status then who can? Or maybe they did and I just don’t get it.

Lets be clear though. I am probably a minority of 1 against the other 11999 folks who perhaps did enjoy it.

I enjoyed the ‘spectacle’ right enough; lasers without end, coffin shaped lighting rigs moving all over, rotating drum riser, huge rectangular stage providing the performers ample space to strut their stuff but the sound……….oh the sound.

Well, it was either diabolical or exactly how a truly heavy metal show should sound.

Within 15 metres of the stage at ground level the audible sound was that of a 747 taking off in the early seventies, with you strapped to the wing - in a tunnel.

Medicine Head were the support and subtle they ain’t, but they were working damn hard but all you got at floor level was the sound of a thousand jack hammers hitting an empty gas holder.

The drums, in particular the bass drums, washed out every other possible sound. Guitar, bass, everything. It was apocalyptically bad. To me.

I ventured up into the gods, and here some definition was to be found. Too late for Medicine Head, but not too late for medicine.

I watched Metallica and for the first time in my life I wore earplugs for the entire duration of a show. The clarity of the sound was certainly better but it was if anything LOUDER than ever. Rob Trejillo changed bass virtually every song. Maybe it was the sweat or something but it didn’t matter a damn because they just don’t need him. Anything and everything he does is lost in an ocean of drumming.

If this is how it is supposed to be, so be it. But what is the motivation to write and create and play music that you simply obliterate with volume. These are fine musicians and performers who seem to play to the lowest common denominator – noise.

It works. It works for 12000 people every night I guess and when money talks, subtlety walks.

Sorry if I diss the genre or Metallica. I don’t mean to. They aren’t playing for me they are playing for the millions who love this music at maximum distortion.

But one final point. I said it was last Metallica show. I lied, it won’t be, because now I want to see them ‘unplugged’ and really hear what they can do.

It was an arena metal concert.  the only person you should be mad at is  yourself for going in and expecting different.  if it was your first metal concert or arena concert, then it is an honest mistake.  These two things pretty much hold true in every instance.

1. metal played live is heavier than on the album.  It is also usually louder as well.
2. arena shows have shite sound and it is usually loud as all hell.  Consider that they are filling out a massive arena with sound.  the acoustics are rarely if ever good.

Re: Metallica.....an evenings of firsts....and lasts

that's funny, 'cept for the ear damage...the 747 reference reminds me of an Yngwye Malmsteen concert I went to...it was in a medium-sized club (~900 capacity), but he still had all 16 Marshall Stacks ablazing as if he were playing Shea Stadium or a small country...he had a keyboard player, singer, and bass player, but I couldn't distinguish anything they were doing....only the head-splitting, wind-tunnel-like whoosh of guitar and drums...I'll stick to the CDs

Thanks for your review Mike - you made the best out of the experience: even if you had a bad evening, at least we had a good laugh thanks to your funny post ....

lol

I once wanted to get tickets for Metallica (in a phase when all of my friends where Heavy Metal guys and I started listening to Iron Maiden and Metallica ...). But they played Rock im Park here in Nürnberg and the tickets  where just insanely expensive. Doesn´t make any sense to me why I should pay 4 times as much money as a ticket for Joe´s shows would cost - just to stand 300 meters away from the artist, in an arena packed with thousands of (often enough stinking and drunk) other idiots. wink I did it once for Eric Clapton and once for Paul McCartney and they were both worth it, but the arena thing just doesn´t do it for me. If I want to see a musician on a screen I watch a DVD.

So let´s hope that Sunday will make up for the bad show! smile

See you there, Eva

Re: Metallica.....an evenings of firsts....and lasts

My first ever concert was Metallica five and a half years ago at Earls Court, still like the band, but like you I probably wouldn't see them live again - I was right at the front, which meant there was a great atmosphere, but I don't remember the sound being anything special, I prefer them on cd.
It wasn't a very memorable gig, the only thing I remember is getting Lars' drink in my hair after he threw it in the crowd.
But like you, Hansamike, I probably won't see them again.

My first ever gig was also Metallica, at the SEC, Glasgow in 1991. I loved it at the time and that was the time the started to get huge so the cost was not too bad at the time. They may have been loud then but at the time I had no previous gigs to compare it to. Certainly though whatever the style of music, if it's too loud it will ruin the show.
Far more into my rockin' blues than my metal these days and usually the volume is not too bad.

The bit about the bass player made me laugh, sounds like he'd have been best off behind the sound desk! lol

You know what they say buddy..."If it's too loud, then you're too old !"  Ha ha !

Bad sound can certainly ruin a show and like was stated above, it's even harder in an arena that was set up for sports, not music.  Sounds like the sound man just didn't have things tuned in, especially for the volume.

I saw Candlebox twice back in the day and the sound was so horrible I couldn't even make out what song they were playing half the time and I know everything they play by heart !  Also saw a Testament concert that was so bad we just left.  Sometimes I wonder if the sound mans ears slowly get shot over the course of a tour and they just keep turning everything up?

Everybody has been quite sympathetic, which, on this forum, I guess I should have expected. As to the gig I guess I was expecting something else. Metal certainly, loud 'n proud, but distinct.

I guess I'm confused about it in as much as it seems thats how the fans want it. Yes, it was an indoor arena but other bands play them and achieve great sound, but fans of this genre don't actually seem to care - which is a bit of a pity IMO.

But you're right Brett. If it's too loud I'm too old and I don't even understand anymore it seems. The final proof will be on Saturday when it could be a case of the biter bit. We have a gig at a motorbike meet. We will be road testing our own 'new' PA. If we cock up the sound there it will be OUR fault and a couple of hundred bikers will probably have something to say about it.

Might be making my next post sucking hospital food through a straw. Rock 'n Roll. Dontcha just love it to death.......

Re: Metallica.....an evenings of firsts....and lasts

I saw Metallica many years ago at an outdoor arena (they were opening for Guns 'n Roses).  Believe it or not most people thought they were not loud enough - seems the town that hosts the arena (i.e. football stadium) has a noise ordinance that they were looking to enforce that night so the decibels were held  down.  When you're sitting at a Guns 'n Roses/Metallica show and you can talk to the person sitting next to you it definitely isn't loud enough.  Must be a happy medium somewhere.  It's not fun hearing noises in you ears for a few days after a show.

I was at the metallica gig in scotland and loved it!

Maybe being biased coz i love metallica but sound was fine for me.Stood at the back and could everthing fine.

Beening a metal fan i have been to louder gigs, like seeing anthrax in a small venue.couldnt hear for 2 days! lol  but i dont have a problem with my metal gigs beening loud.

Bands like slayer who ever time i have seen them have always got the sound spot on and play unreal show.

Re: Metallica.....an evenings of firsts....and lasts

Hansamike I was front row for Ozzfest at Nissan Pavillion (outdoors).  Pantera, Ozzy and other assorted dirge masters had me mesmerized for hours.  Got an Iommi pick and a Dimebag Darrell pick so I was in heaven.  Then Ozzy tells the crowd, "Come on down" and here they come.  I wake up, I don't know how much later, but the only people in the pavillion were me and EMT's.  I was crushed against the metal dividers and literally had a 6 inch bruise on my chest that had every color of the rainbow.  So you see it can get worse at a metal show!  Me likes Joe's fans cause they understand simple things like courtesy, manners, etc.

Awestruck

Re: Metallica.....an evenings of firsts....and lasts

I like Metallica, but I know exactly what you mean about being way too loud...

I still chuckle to myself about Jethro Tull Winning the Grammy in 1989 for best hard rock/metal performance vocal or instrumental instead of the predicted Metallica.

I quote - "The flute is a heavy, metal instrument"

Love it! lol
