Topic: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

I'd strongly recommend everyone who has access to this channel to watch this tonight:

Peter Green: Man of the World

BBC 4 Today, 21:30 on BBC Four

SynopsisLegendary blues guitarist BB King named Peter Green as one of the greatest exponents of the blues, and the 'only guitar player to make me sweat'. If Green had only written Black Magic Woman, his name would still have a place in blues rock history forever.

His three short years leading Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac saw the band established as one of the biggest-selling groups of the 1960s. Yet at the height of their fame Green left the group, with his life spiralling into turmoil as drug-induced mental health issues took control. Rumours of his demise began to spread, and sightings of him became notorious.

After years battling his mental illness, Green is writing and recording again. Featuring archive performances and interviews with Carlos Santana, Noel Gallagher, founding members of Fleetwood Mac and Green himself, this film tells the story of one of blues rock's living legends.

Phew! Would have missed this. Thanks Duncan.

I once had the Fleetwood Mac LP with the dog on the album cover but it got knicked at a party sad  I've still got A Hard Road though - John Mayall with Peter Green. At the time I actually preferred A Hard Road to Bluesbreakers but they're both classics.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

Well done Duncan,

Just seen this one and I won't miss it.

Here ! How about this little gem on the Green front. talking about two drummers at RAH , the only place I saw two drummers was when Mac played their second set covering Cream numbers - I think Spoonful was one of them. Mick Fleetwood was joined by a young blonde drummer who I remember as being very hot.

Recently I bought a six disc ELP set with a sleevenote booklet the size of War and Peace. In this booklet I learn that Mac's drum dep in those days was Carl Palmer. Now Carl was a Bournemouth boy (UK ) The gig was in Bournemouth and he was Mac's dep. I can't prove it, but chances are he was the extra drummer that night.

You heard it here first, from The Serious Rumour Squad.

Gunter,

I can't help you - I have cable recorded straight on to a hard-drive.

Just a thought - you could download BBC iplayer and possibly watch a re-run via the net ?

This is a a free service.

.

I saw Papa George Band live at a venue in SW London in 2001 - with 2 drummers!  WOW I said to George afterwards that was WICKED!  He laughed smile  Seriously it worked really well...
Saw PG live at the Jazz Cafe Camden on his initial return, also me ol' mates The Producers supported him on his comeback tour...so saw all of them at Poole Art Centre in 1996..  I think it was...?  Just got divorced#2 that year so cant really remember sad
The Producers are well worth a look up, will post something on 'Other Artists' for those who haven't heard of them.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

My son has set the recorder and we should be able to copy the recording from the hard drive to a DVD.

Let me know and I'll gladly post a DVD off to you Günter.

Know what you mean Phil. Unfortunately, my techno-savvy son is out all day so I've had to transfer it to DVD myself. Still, it seems OK

It's in the post Günter.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

What a great documentary and it certainly brought back memories. Shame Peter couldn't remember much about it.
It was great to see the band again, I haven't seen any footage of the original band playing, there was not much film recording in those days and although they sold thousands of albums the original band were still a club outfit right up until Albatross - and I saw them in a 300/400 head venue even after that, even helped carry their gear in. (Not much of that by today's standards)

And hey, something else, they really didn't play that loud, just enough for everyone to feel the music.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

Yes oit was certainly very interesting. Peter did look quite happy and relaxed on film, so that is good! smile Also of interest that is the first time I have heard Jeremey Spencer being interviewed and Mike Vernon was also interesting.

If you did miss it, look for it on i-player.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

I watched the documentary Duncan. Makes you wonder how his career and music would have panned out
if it had not been curtailed by the crap he got involved in.
Maybe he could have joined Joe on stage. Who knows?
Still enjoy the old stuff anyway.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

Due to (Curryman-)David´s help I could watch this very interesting documentary now, too.
What a great soul in such a fragile personality. And how horrifying the journey from bright creativity into the dark night of the soul, in tightness and apathy induced by schizophrenia, but also the "blessings" of modern psychiatry!

Yes, he seemed to be more at ease with himself these days, sometimes really happy. I loved Carlos Santana commenting on Peter´s genius with John Lee Hooker´s words : "it had to come out because it´s in him" - and his hope that - given the right circumstances and the right friends- Peter might spread his wings again.

Re: PETER GREEN DOCUMENTARY ON THE BBC TONIGHT

What a great community this place is. Günter very kindly offered to send me some Peter Green mp3's but what he actually sent looks like his entire Peter Green collection. And boy does Günter have an extensive collection.

I've had a little listen from time to time throughout the day and what a joy to listen to tracks that I haven't heard in years. Stop Messin' Around, Love That Burns etc. from the early stuff really took me back. It made me feel quite old though - those tracks are now over 40 years old roll
