Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Yes make this a sticky.  I plan on making a few more videos myself so this would be a cool spot for everyone congregate/archive their videos.  The next one I make will be of either my new 21st birthday present from my mom and dad, a 1959 Gibson Korina Skylark lap steel, or a follow up to the original video seeing how I got better at the pairing thing and I've added a little extra touch to it here or there.

I look forward to hopefully hearing everyone else's gear/playing.

I'm down! big_smile  But what is the easiest way to get a decent video recording?  Ben I liked the way yours turned out, how did you record yours?

I only ask because a lot of Youtube recordings lack low end and don't do the sound any justice at all.  Your demo seemed to have plenty of low end without sounding farty or tinny.  I have never really posted a video online so I'm a complete beginner.  I was wondering if there are any techniques that would give better results.  I hope to have a demo posted soon.

LOL Sorry Bro, but I just had to do it.  I knew what you meant.  When I did it I basically Mic'd the overall sound by putting the camera outside the room and zooming in.  You don't want to hit the Mic directly at the cabs b/c all you'll pick up is the high end.  Same principle as setting a Mic on a cab.  I also play at arena volumes so it was the only way.  This will also not give you Mic distortion.  It took a few trial and errors of playing and moving the mic around until it sounded somewhat close tot he original.  It still only sounds about 85% right on the video.  Its much better in person.

Yeah Justin very valid point noone wants to post clips that have inferior sound quality
we want everyone to hear what we are hearing. Bens did sound particuarly good
so Im guessing he had a top quality camcorder .
what I have found is if I record a clip with my camera then transfer it to my computer
then open the file using realplayer and turn the bass up using the onboard equliser
then it starts to sound close to the sound I am recording ,but then how to share this with
everyone becomes the problem  . anyone any thoughts on this?

PS . SAW JOE LAST NIGHT IN GLASGOW , WHAT A SHOW AWESOME!!!!
although I still miss the strat!!!

Nothing fancy - middle of the road camera and my brother doing a good job filming and keeping the mic directly off the cabs.

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Thanks for the tips that is a really good idea.  I have my cab baffled as well to cut down on the death ray.  One more question:  Since your brother was in the room with you filming the demo I'm assuming the mic used was not the camera one???  How did you mic the sound from outside the room not using the one built into the camera?

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

I'd like to know as well.  My sons film with an older, top model Sony Hi8 to film cassette and believe it or not the compression is my friend on indoor gigs.

Outdoors however it loses some bottom.  What mic & how sinc.

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Thats the idea.  If you are using a camera mic like I did you can't pinpoint it at a sound when playing insanly loud as I do.  # 1 those mics are terrible and pickup a ton of high end and # 2 at loud volumes they sound distorted (your farty tinny description).  Its basically picking up the overall sound.  It still wont sound 100% like in person, but it will get you close.  Again, I play just as loud as Joe so recording the sound from a distance cuts down of the above.  Think of the room as a giant speaker cab you never mic the center always the outsides.  If you want to record it at bedroom levels you shouldn't have a problem being in the room but thats not as fun as diming your amps lol.  Also my camera and I think pretty much all new ones have a buffer in it to keep the volume equal.  Thats why my voice sounds lower at times b/c the buffer has to cacth up and re-adjust itself for talking volume instead of arena volume.  I basically tried to compensate for everything.  Do some test runs of just playing.  It will come around you just need to mess around a little bit.

Hope this helps and make sense lol,

Ben

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Thanks a bunch Ben I'll take a crack at it as soon as I get my camera!  Thanks for that inspiring demo of yours.  I probably wouldn't muster up the courage to put up one of my own if it wasn't for guys like you, SOFTMC, and Alex.  And we definately need a dedicated sticky for CLIPS ONLY.  This thread could be used for the comments and stuff. cool

Yeah
I look forward to hearing clips, the good thing here is there is a lot of
knowledge here and we can learn from each other and hear different
combinations of amps , hope Spider is up for this as I want to hear
        OTS/JUBE combination

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Hi,

I like to chime in here! cool Indeed there is very good stuff around here.
And I always like to hear the gear of you guys. Beside Bens great stuff I want to remind
to SOFTMCs great video of the Just got paid solo. I think Jimi75 has posted his stuff too.
To make this sticky would be great.

Its tricky to make a proper clip which does the gear justice.
The bottom end gets cut out in my videos. But I will try as you did.
Main thing we all enjoy this noise we make. lol

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Okay guys I think I've got everything I need now to make some clips! Hopefully I can get everything together today and have posts up ASAP.  BTW thanks to all the fellow players on here pushing me.  I've been wanting to do this for a while!

Re: JB inspired rigs . clips

Justin, indeed we all wait for your clips. big_smile
You have really tasty stuff. I'm pretty curious.
Otherwise I understand if one is lame to make vids.
I personally wasn't sure too..."Is there really anybody interested to hear my stuff?"
Yes. We need a kick in the a$$ sometimes just to do it. wink
I like to hear other gear. Its impossible to try everything unless you are
millionair with a big store full of gear.
I will make a new clip too as soon my two new cabs have arrived.
