Topic: Amps with high mids?

Im looking for a head or combo with high mids.
Taking the Bonamassa idea of running the dumble style amps with the marshall. It seems its very difficult to find out what amps have the higher mids. Can anyone help?

Can't really afford a dumble clone or that, was thinking around £700 max.

Re: Amps with high mids?

I think you can definately get into the Dumble ballpark with that kind of money.  700 British Pounds is about $1100 am I correct?  Here's some quick ebay searches,  I have no experiences with the amps though.

For the Dumble sound on a budget I can can't speak highly enough of the Ceriatone Overtone though it may be slightly above what you are willing to pay.  I think they are a bargain and have ended my Dumble GAS.  Perhaps the cheapest way to get in the ballpark would be to get an old blackface/silverface Fender and put a Dumble style overdrive in front of it.  The Ocean FX Pearl Drive, Fuchs Plush OD, Zendrive, Ethos, Jetter GSR, Menatone Howie, etc are some common Dumble inspired pedals.  One day I cranked my Bassman up, attenuated it, added a slight reverb/echo and it was VERY close to my Overtone.  The best overall choice though would be the Overtone hands down for getting as close to the real thing without selling your house.

Re: Amps with high mids?

Thanks a lot for the links.

See, a problem with Ceriatone is that it costs a hell of a lot to get them sent to the UK. Seems my best option is the usual companies that are available in standard guitar stores really.

Re: Amps with high mids?

Jimi, Stratpaul has a point here. Ceriatone is absolutely high class stuff.
I really would save up some more cash to buy the Ceriatone OTS or HRM.
After buying the 2550 I cannot justify another amp now but I would go for it. big_smile

I am thinking about it now haha.
I had a look at the site, seems the shipping isnt too bad.

Re: Amps with high mids?

+1 on Ceriatone for the value & Nik's service.  I would avoid the S&M version... the mods on that one seem to take you away from Dumble territory.

If you can tweak an amp yourself or know someone who does there is plenty of documentation on ampgarage.com to help you nail the dumble tone, even a set of tweaks specifically aimed at the Ceriatone ODS.  On a HRM with Pre-amp Boost (PAB) engaged you get a nice mid hump (or at least I do on my Bluesmaster clone).

Re: Amps with high mids?

Can anyone tell me how the ODS sounds?

Re: Amps with high mids?

One word answer: Glorious. big_smile big_smile big_smile big_smile

A Dumble ODS is a great sounding amp for most applications.  To my ears here is how I would describe the Dumble ODS.  The amps are not very bassy, but do have a good deal of low end especially through 12" speakers.  The frequencies that are emphasized on the ODS are the highs, upper mids, and mids.  Compared to a 100w Marshall the 100w ODS low end range cannot compare.  The overdrive is a lot "looser" than a Marshall or Fender.  Almost like an old Mesa Boogie Mark I, pretty compressed.  The amps are basically set up like a Fender Twin or Showman (tons of headroom for cleans) but the overdrive section is it's own animal.  With the midboost + PAB it quickly looses it's Fender roots and can be pretty rockin' with the right EQ.  The more you pour on the gain the more Marshall/Mesa they sound.
Now there are the HRM and non-HRM models and they do sound quite different.  The HRM models are a little more aggressive and articulate, less of that syrupy fusion sound.  Don't be fooled though, the famous Dumble tones of Ford/Carlton can easily be had with a HRM.  So in a nutshell the clean channel is a lot like a high powered Fender amp, the gain is like Fender/Marshall/Mesa mixture.

PS. take your time man and get what you want.  Don't settle on something you won't be happy with, life is too short for that.  Besides if you don't like it Ceriatones have great resale value especially because of the wait times for the OTS! smile

Thanks a lot for that review.

Seems that the one I'll be getting if I do at all.

Re: Amps with high mids?

I've heard nothing but good things about these, if you want to go more towards the "Dumble" camp:

Another option might be Budda or Dr. Z. Great amps from both companies!

The Dr. Z Carmen Ghia is a really cool amp, worth checking into.

I will run 2 Amps sometimes. Usually a Budda Twinmaster and a Deluxe Reverb type amp. The Budda covers a similar territory to a Vox. Those Mids, along with the Fender type Mids, really do fill out the sound. I got the idea of the Vox/Fender mix for clean tones, from Carl Verheyen.

No problem man if I wasn't so busy I would post a demo video or something to show you how great it sounds.  My HRM 100 is really the last amp I think I would let go of because of how hard they are to come by and the amazing tones that can be had.  I would try emailing Nik from Ceriatone to ask him what would probably fit your needs the best and also to get a price quote.  He is very reasonable and sometimes even quotes less than what is on the website!  The neat thing about buying the OTS is that it takes a few months to get it so you can spend the money and basically forget about the amp for a while.  Over those three months work some of that money back and VOILA the DHL van will be at your door before you know it!  I did some custom stuff to mine as far as appearances go but it's not neccessary.  I got a custom white color head enclosure with silver piping from www.gabkits.com and then bought some aftermarket black Vox grillcloth to make it look like an old Dumble.  I think all in all for everything it was about $1500 USD.  If you get the 50 watter and less frills you could probably get one for under $1300 easy.  Good luck and let us know what you decide!
