Topic: JB on Later with Jools Holland

On Friday 17 April 2009, Joe appeared on the long-running (UK) BBC2 TV show, Later with Jools Holland. Armed with his signature Goldtop Les Paul (capoed at the 3rd fret) & a Marshall half-stack, he performed one number with Jools on piano & several members of Holland's R&B Orchestra (bass, drums, guitar, 2 saxophones): a storming version of Lonesome Road Blues. He played the song almost entirely with thumb & fingers apart from the two solos for which he used a pick. (It looks like he retains the pick in the crook of his index finger whilst fingerpicking). There were several great left-hand close-ups showing Joe's peerless fingerboard technique. Jools also did a short, somewhat rushed (50 secomd) interview with JB, discussing his early influences (Clapton, Free, Led Zeppelin) and love of English music. What a guy!

I hope you get a chance to read this but what I think is the greatest part of your appearance on Jools' show was his intro about being told about you from Eric Clapton...Talk about major goosebump factor...

Can you tell us what that meant to you when you heard it?

What bothered me about this show, was that he only got to do one number....

Would have been far better to let him open the show and close with something like India/Mountain Time.....or even Slow Gin, which despite my having listened to over and over....still love.

I grew up with my Dad listening to the likes of Eric Clapton.....I'd say Joe is possibly even better right now than Clapton ever was. It's not about technical ability for me so much, it's more the feeling you get when you hear a musician play, the emotional connection you make with the music. I just get more from Joe's playing. Don't get me wrong, I love Clapton too, maybe it's just that JB is current and from my generation dunno.

I have been meaning to post since seeing Joe on Jools Hollands show, just not gotten round to it until now.

Joe Blew it on Jools Holland........I mean if he wants to go on again I can't see any other artist agreeing to appear alongside Joe and the band cos he made every other artist on the show look mediocre. Was there a moment when Jools stopped playing the piano and just gazed in admiration at Joe with a big grin on his face.

“Later” is one of the few programmes still produced by the BBC, - most get outsourced these days.

What a great find! Excellent version of the song and might be the first time with horns? I wonder if the arrangement was the genesis of the current line-up with Lee and Paulie?

Thanks Phil for the links.  I had seen them a while back online ... almost every day I check the tv program guide ... got Palladia carried by our cable co. only 2-3 years ago ... and older Jools repeats are on almost daily ... but never Joe's episode that I have seen. (would like to DVR and burn it.)
