Topic: .Glasgow , Scotland The 02 Academy 27/04/09

Hi there guys,

This is my first post.

I am attending the above gig in glasgow and this will be my first Joe Bonamassa gig.

Im getting really excited and can't wait.Ive been reading a lot of the reviews and it just sounds like an amazing night.

Is there anybody else going?

I really wanna be down the front for this gig.I try to collect plectrums from every gig i go to and would love to get one of Joes.

My only problem for the night is gonna be that i am getting laser eye surger on the friday and the gig is on the monday night and ive been told that my eyes will be light sensitive.I hope they are not too bad and dont have to wear sunglasses to gig

Hi Borninhell82,
Hope your eyes will be ok. You could spend the whole night with your eyes shut and still have a great time as long as your ears are working properly lol
You'll have to open them in order to catch a pick though roll
Have a great time and come and tell us about it afterwards.

Tripsy smile

Re: .Glasgow , Scotland The 02 Academy 27/04/09

I'll be there in Glasgow too, Burninhell. I hope he does come out afterwards too

(especially as he was too ill to the last time he was here)

Re: .Glasgow , Scotland The 02 Academy 27/04/09

Just back from the gig. Though it was incredible!
It's now no1 on my gigs list! Well done Joe!

Slightly pissed off now though, cause watching that playing really does make you feel pathetic when you compare it to yourself haha.

The acoustic solo was just amazing, and I think The Great Flood was the best song of the night (personal favourite anyway).

Also, a good laugh, with telling that guy to shoosh while ringing out one note haha.

Other reviews folks?

Re: .Glasgow , Scotland The 02 Academy 27/04/09

Ok guys, here's the set list:

Django
The Ballad of John Henry
So It's Like That
Last Kiss
So Many Roads
Stop
Another Kind of Love
Woke up Dreaming
High Water Everywhere (Boogie beating hell out of the drums)
Sloe Gin
Lonesome Road Blues
Happier Times (Stunning)
Your Funeral My Trial
Blues Deluxe
Story of a Quarryman
The Great Flood (Equally stunning)
Just Got Paid

Encore:
Mountain Time
Asking Around For You

Did the groupie thing afterwards with Duncan standing in the rain at the tour bus. Joe came out to meet and greet, ("Greennose, awesome" said Joe) and we wished him safe journey and good voice for RAH.

Re: .Glasgow , Scotland The 02 Academy 27/04/09

(deep breath) Here goes...

Joe’s concert last night was everything you’d ever want from a Joe Bonamassa show – and more!

Ben Montague was an ok support act with a nice voice, but I’d rather hear someone supporting Joe who can play a bit of blues, there are plenty of them about.

I will spare you a track by track review but the atmosphere was electric when Joe came onto the stage playing Django, and the crowd were in for a real treat. Having seen many live concerts in recent years I have seen great guitar players sound average and average guitar players sound rather good, but with Joe last night this was a guitar player at the top of his game.  He did rocking, subtlety and everything in between, the playing with fluid and always tasteful. His vocals were strong, indeed they grew through the set and his band was superb.

Some of you may recall that one of my early posts was a review of Joe at the Arches in Glasgow last year, and if you got the feeling I was slightly underwhelmed then that was probably true.
At the time Joe was not particularly well, played too many fancy guitar parts rather than songs and the venue was cramped with a low ceiling.

See it here if you want:

http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5232 hmm

Last night everything seemed to be in place and the concert was 10 times better – this was the really Joe Bonamassa experience that I’d read about on here for so long!  The balance and pace of the set list was spot on, the sound was great and significantly Joe was playing a venue worthy of his status.  So forget the discussions on venues, each artist has a stage worthy of their achievements and Joe’s has risen from 40 to 2500 in four years in this city – no mean achievement.

Was great to hear so many new songs from the new album, as Tom says Happier Times and The Great Flood were two of the standout moments, indeed I had a little bit of an Icon (Ian Parker) moment during the solo of the latter. It was also fantastic to hear Blues Deluxe for the first time - this was the third Joe song I ever heard, and doesn’t he play it so well! Woke Up Dreaming had a flamenco style into and then seamed nicely into High Water Everywhere. Lonesome Road Blues was great too (although I could not get Jools’ smiling face out of my sight lol  Unlike the reviewer above, I realised how much I like some of Joe’s songs that I really listen to, it was like that with Sloe Gin and Just Got Paid was enthralling.  To top that we got Mountain Time and a superb version of Asking Around For You where Joe sang open mic after silencing some rowdy crowd members with his finger. Yes a little more conversation would have been nice, but we were there to see Joe play, not talk. All in all Joe was a class act from the first minute to the last.  As I said, he is at the top of his game and I for one cannot wait til Monday. cool

Standing outside in the Glasgow rain was worth it too as Joe did fool us by getting from the venue to the bus without us spotting him under his beano hat, but he did then come out again to sign autographs for those of us who had waited. When I told him my forum name as Tom says he said “Greenose from the forum, that’s awesome” as he signed my copy of TBOJH. Well it was not me, or my appearance that was awesome Joe, it was you – all night! smile

Whatever happens at the Albert Hall Joe, you made me very happy with your performance last night and it’s one I will never forget.  You are head and shoulders above the rest!  As many of you may know, I don’t do gushing and unreserved praise very often, but I’m happy to make an exception in this case. Wherever you are if Joe is anywhere near to you, get yourself out to see this man and his band, he is unstoppable!

To sum up: A Superb and Breathtaking Performance! big_smile

Re: .Glasgow , Scotland The 02 Academy 27/04/09

I have to agree with everyone so far except Bullwinkle on last night's outstanding gig at the O2 Academy in Glasgow.

I went with my Dad, and whilst I go to gigs regularly over a wide spectrum of music, I consider that last night was one of the best I've ever been to.

Bullwinkle, I've got no beef with your review, because everyone wants different things from gigs like this, but I don't agree with your assessment of the atmosphere.  As far as I was concerned, yes, it differed a little from the usual Academy spirit, but the reason for that was the fact that Joe had attracted a crowd that was unlike the usual Academy audience.  He'd attracted a more discerning audience, one that was happy to listen, pause in dumstruck adulation at the end, and then pulsate in appreciation, rather than, as is usual, cheer and holler all the way from start to finish.

Also, as it was suggested earlier, we didn't come to hear the man speak - we came to hear him play, and boy did we?!!

I loved the fact that even though I know Joe's music to heart, I was expecting a completely focussed blues performance but in fact ended up experiencing blues, flamenco, rock, soul and even a little bit of reggae at one point.

It's a gig I'll never forget, and I can't wait to hear the new album which I've still to get my hands on.  I've done a wee review on my blog and reflected a little on Joe's place in today's music industry (http://fortheloveofglasgow.blogspot.com) and hope you don't mind me mentioning it - I just feel the need to share the love about a guy whose talent's made me grin like an idiot since the first time I heard him play.

If you're reading this Joe, thanks again. You've brought a Father and Son even closer with your music & your magnetic performance last night, and I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Glasgow.

Scott
