Topic: Derek Trucks Band

Saw the Derek Trucks Band last night at the new House of Blues in Boston.  Excellent show.  They did lots of stuff from "Already Free" as well as their usual serious jaming.  As an added bonus Susan Tedeschi was also there.  She is a local girl and always seems to be at Derek's Boston area shows (at least all the ones I've been to) - probably a good chance to visit with her family.  One really cool bit had Susan singing a short line, and then Derek matched it on his guitar - very cool!

Jamoie's (of the ABB) Jazz Band opened - very cool bluesy-jazz set, but it ran a little long.  The new venue is very pretty to look at (kind of strange - the earthy, primitive decor looked like it was decorated with the DTB in mind) but was set up for standing room and packed - very difficult to see anything.  My feet are too old to stand for 3 hours anymore- although being able to dance is nice!  Was able to pick up Already Free on vinyl!  Have to give that a listen today.  Will be interesting how the song that already sounds like vinyl on the CD sounds like on vinyl!

Interesting to see how Derek has matured over the years - similar to watching Joe mature.

I know he is touring in the US now and then off across the pond - if you get a chance to see him please do.  You won't be disappointed.

And Jeff - I was too far from the stage to see if he smiled at Susan!

Great video Roy. Thanks. I think I will take my camera along.
Do you think It's possible that he would ask Oli on stage for a jam?

Re: Derek Trucks Band

Tripsy -

You will really enjoy yourself, but don't be disappointed if Susan isn't there.  She doesn't travel around with Derek as much anymore because of her other commitments, #1 being their kids.  Boston seems to be an exception for that probably because that is her home turf.  I'll be seeing her solo in June, and have already bought tickets for the Hot August Blues in Maryland in August.

You will find Derek's style and playing quite different to watch from Joe's.  Two amazing talents on the same instrument but such totally different ways of going about it.  I look forward to comparing notes with you at one of the RAH events.

Tripsy, it's possible Derek would do that; I understand he's a very nice guy. I'm sure they woud blend well too as Derek is a master of slide guitar, so I think Oli would blend with his style. You are in for a very entertaining evening my dear. Oh hey, say hello to Simon for me too, OK? smile

Re: Derek Trucks Band

Thanks for the review Sandy ... I just love "Already free", it´s one of those records that I never put back to the shelf, because I play it too often to make the effort to put it back to its place every time. wink

I know that Derek also plays some gigs here in Germany, but I think it´s "bad timing" ... can´t go. BUT I hope to see him at the Hot August Blues Festival in August! Are you coming too Sandy?!

hey Tripsy

I hadn't been able find any details of support bands - so is Oli Brown supporting for all of Derek Trucks' UK dates do you know? If so that's great. After reading the rave reviews from you and others on here I had put Oli down as someone to go and see. Now it looks like I may catch Oli at Derek's Shepherds Bush show. A musical BOGOF you might say.

I also have a question for Eva which might solve a little mystery. Have you got an import of Already Free or did it get released in Germany before the UK? Play.com had it shown for release on 31st March but now it's 3-5 days and Amazon UK are saying release date is 13th April. Just wondered.

Thanks

David

Re: Derek Trucks Band

I'm contemplating going to Shepherds Bush on the 22nd too, David. If I do I'll look out for you.

I can't see this date mentioned here: http://www.oliselectricblues.co.uk/gigs.html
then again, I can't see any mention of the 25th either.

Tripsy, I see Oli's playing Holmfirth again on 16th May. 5.00pm start seems a bit early. roll Could be a long night for you. big_smile

Hi David, it's Simon McBride supporting Derek at Shepherds Bush, Oli is doing the Manchester and Sheffiled shows. Simon is a fine guitarist too... smile

If you do Phil I'll buy you a beer! On the advice of you and Michael I got myself a stalls standing ticket. It'd be good to meet up.

Hey David,

Yes, Already Free is already released here in Germany. I think it might have been Feburary?! Not completely sure, but I think I´ve got it since March. Strange that the UK release dates seem to be so much later sometimes .... ?

Re: Derek Trucks Band

If anyone is interested there is a torrent of the Boston show on Dimeadozen.

Yes, Eva, I already have tickets for Hot August Blues.  Going to have to be a quick trip, though.  As soon as I saw who was playing at that one I started plotting about how to manage that trip.  Are you going to be near Boston at all - if you are let me know.

Re: Derek Trucks Band

That´s cool ... then we´ll hopefully meet there !
My plans for the US-trip are not even near being finished, so I have no idea where I´ll be going yet. Just one thing is for sure: First stop - Cathy´s house!! big_smile
I´d love to travel around a bit, but as a typical European I tend to underestimate distances in the US ... I´ll let you know as soon as I know more. smile

Hi Phil, yes the Holmfirth gig should be good. It's part of the Holmfirth Classic Rock & Blues Splash or CRABS for short!!
The lineup for the day is Tantrum, Oli Brown, Stan Web, Buddy Whittington and Nine Below Zero.
I'd like to see Buddy Whittington and Nine Below Zero are always a great lively band. All for under £20 too.
Just hope I have some money left after the London extravaganza!

David, I'm sure you will enjoy Simon McBride. Oli's support dates for Derek Trucks don't show on his gig listing yet for Manchester and Sheffield but I have it on very good authority that 'tis so smile
I'm sure you will get the chance to see Oli when he tours again in Oct.

Sandy, I wasn't expecting that Susan would be appearing too, although that would have been brilliant. Look forward to chatting with you in London. Four weeks today we'll be on our way!:D
