Topic: I'm writing a review of Joe for Blues Matters!

I thought you might be interested to know that I will be writing a review of Joe’s concert in Glasgow on 27th April this year. A friend of mine is a top class photographer of concerts and at after a recent concert we attended he asked me if I would be happy to write a review of the No Mean City festival taking place in Glasgow later this month for the publication Blues Matters. The concerts include Joe, Garry Moore and Buddy Whittington, Sherman Robertson and the Nimmo Brothers!

Just to clarify this will be a review of Joe, not an interview, but one can hope for the future, eh! As you can probably tell I love writing about music, so I am delighted to be given this chance! Assuming all goes well, you should see the reviews in a future edition of Blues Matters!

Thanks for your responses guys and girls. smile  At least you know it is a Joe fan that will be writing the review (and not a purist!).

Yes, they are here:

Paul is wheelchair bound, so most of his pictures are taken from a lower angle than you may see from other photographers, but I think they are superb. Check out the photo of Ian Siegal which was voted one of the top live concert pictures on flickr.  There are some great ones of Seasick Steve, Aynsley, Robin Trower and many more including some from the Chicago Blues Festival which he flew over to attend last year, including BB King!

Blues Matters is a great magazine with many reviews of albums and live shows, the next edition should be out this week!

tongue  Well I was pulling for you.  Your assumption that a purist could not be a Joe fan, is at best just wrong.

However I am certain that you will do an excellent job.  You write well.

Public congrats to you Duncan.  I'll be looking forward to reading the reviews.  I checked out your friend, Paul Webster's photos and I'm dumbfounded that anyone challenged could produce this level of exceptional photographs - some of the best I've ever seen.  What camera and lens does he use?

Yes maybe, I did not state what type of purist I was referring to anyway, so I could be a Joe purist! smile What I meant though was there will be no references to "biker music" or any such suggestions, and I know the songs!

Curby, I'll find out for you. Thanks to you all for you wishes!

Brilliant Duncan
You must be well chuffed.
I buy BM quite often and I'll certainly be looking for this issue.

One of my secret daydreams (dunno why it should be secret) is to have a maybe one off radio show to play my fave  music......and the 17th track is also from Joe Bonamassa......... smile
Local community station will do.

Re: I'm writing a review of Joe for Blues Matters!

I am really chuffed for you Duncan, even though it means you will have to miss the Sage gig sad
A small price to pay though for the opportunity to see a whole bunch of great bands and for your big break into music journalism!
Thanks for the link to Paul's photos. They are fantastic. I realise I have seen him at Burnley and Colne. Next time I will go and say Hi.

Tripsy smile

Re: I'm writing a review of Joe for Blues Matters!

Not that I have ANY say whatsoever, but here is a list of terms I wish would not be in your article:

SRV
BB King
"new king of the blues"
"child prodigy"
"Bloodline"
"tender age of..."

the reason I say this is because these terms are in every single article I have ever heard. I do believe he is now beyond terms like this. While I do agree that people who don't know him would probably like to know the early days, it really takes away from what is happenning right now. I'd rather read an article that looks forward than one that looks backwards. While it is not belittling, it take attention away form recent success (2003-present). Take all the above terms out of his real history, and he would still have a lot of credibility simply cause of the records he sells and the shows he sells out.

---------------------------------------------------------
Sorry I took a pee first. NOW terms that I like to see:

earned
top of billboard charts for how many albums
gibson inspired by guitar
world tours
playing larger and larger venues
meets and greets
guitar articles & satellite DJ
vintage guitar collection
respect of blues legends
blues in the schools
evolution

The above terms offer all kinds of street-cred. The fact that people & kids enjoy listening to him, he tops charts, he sells out venues... all attribute to someone well worth writing an article about.

Look forward to reading what you have!

No arguments from me on any of that. Joe will need no introduction to the readers though, Sloe Gin was voted the second best blues album of 2007. Certainly I will mention that I he is playing bigger and bigger venues as this will be his largest venue in Scotland so far, and I also hope to witness the meet and greet! smile I'll try to slip in another couple...

The one downside is that I can no longer attend Joe's concert in Gateshead, as i have to cover Gary Moore's show too. Yes I know... hmm

Re: I'm writing a review of Joe for Blues Matters!

Stating the obvious but worth mentioning that even though he is doing larger venues they are still selling out. The are artist much more well known than joe who cannot fill the same venues. Might be worth researching the percentage that sell out. Each time I have seen him folks are begging for tickets outside, even the touts.

That will be an interesting comparison to make in this case as all the concerts are in the same venue, so I will be able to compare the attendence and number of touts that Joe has compared to the other acts.
