Of course, I wasn't there, but someone who was told me that one of Joe's four amps apparently packed up while he was playing, leading to feverish activity to try and get it fixed. There were also early feedback issues, so I guess it's fair to say that at times, the sound probably wasn't up to the standard of perfection that we have come to expect.

It's also possible that the people who notice things like this are people who also play, as opposed to those of us who are non-musicians and therefore more easily impressed. wink

Hi Amsterhammer .....
I beleive the amp problem was with the Carol Ann JB-100 amp head, I saw the tech behind the stack replacing tubes and finally Joe giving him the thumbs-up sign ..... the repair must have worked. There was some feedback coming from the house system but the boys never skipped a beat and just kept on rocking. smile

There is a recording of this show on www.dimeadozen.org, with a couple of photos. Joe was awesome but the sound did suffer occasionally especially at the beginning of Just Got Paid.

Enjoy!

Yep, the Carol-Ann was the one getting all the attention from the crew mid show.  Halfway through the repair and during "Another Kind Of Love" Joe tried to switch over to it briefly (during Rick's piano solo) and you could hear the big drop in volume with that head mixed in with the Jubilee.  A few more tube switches (ballsy to switch preamp tubes while running!), Joe did get the thumbs up.  I thought the mixing and production of the vocals suffered during the show, nothing against Joe's singing but it's almost like they ran the vocals too hot and tried to 'ride the faders' to bring it in line during each song.  Joe's guitar/amps and the band sounded great, just the vocals handled better by the board.

Re: 3/28 - South Orange, NJ

I thought the show was great...great tone and playing from the entire band.  Joe's voice just gets better and better too.  Yes, there were feedback issues that cropped up but it didn't put a damper on the show at all.  It's funny, but just prior to the feedback issues I had made an observation that while the overall volume was crankin' along nicely, it was just a bit lower than usual .  I actually felt that the lower overall volume was an improvement from some past shows I have seen (at least in the clubs and theaters I've been at).  I felt I heard more clarity and instrument separation at this show.  It was great to see Joe play a few different Les Pauls - they all have a different tone.  I was impressed how good the converted Bigsby Les Paul sounded.  That one always had the best tone live in my opinion and I was kinda sad when I heard about the conversion.  WOW, did that guitar sound nice!  The theater is very nice but unusual...it's a very modern 500 seater with a balcony and comfortable seats built right off the train station (it's practically part of the station!) that doubles as a cinema.  I had a very good few from row E!

I actually talked with Joe yesterday and he never mentioned this at all. So if it was the CA, it must have just been a simple tube issue. I'm meeting him on Sunday so I'll take a look at it if need be.

Joe does tend to lean on the power tubes of his amps more than most and they are the most prone to fail part in any tube amp. Preamp tubes fail a lot more infrequently. Failure of these is usually due to mechanical failures internally in the tube. I sent him a text to ask what happened, so I'll post it when I find out.

The CA had a 5751 preamp tube die. This tube is used for the efx loop. Dave replaced it with a 12AX7, which is OK to get it going again, but when I saw Joe on Sunday I changed it for an NOS Philips 5751. No biggie, tubes fail from time to time  when they are moved around as much as Joes gear is.
