Topic: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Dear folks,

Being a Blues and Rock guitarist (maybe you saw my JTM45 demos I've posted the links to here) I dared taking part in Guitar Idol 09 with a non shredding take. So far I'm doing pretty okay there but to get in the top 20...I would need some support...

It would be totally awesome if you voted for my entry under:

To be able to vote you have to be registered. Please do so if you are not, it cost only 2 minutes of time. THANK YOU.

Thanks a thousand times for your support.

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

You're just another guitar-slinger who just happens to be better than me!
Guess I'll have to keep practicing...
Good luck,

Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Ok, I'll start this off. You're obviously a very good player but from what I can see you're just randomly soloing through the whole piece and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere and it got kind of boring for me after about 30 seconds.
If you watch players like Joe, Eric Johnson, Vai, etc.. you'll notice that when they do instrumentals
they follow a vocal melody line through the song to turn the song into an instrumental  story with dynamics if that makes any sense.
Like I said you've obviously got the talent but I think if you set things up so the tune has a strong melody line with small solo patches around it you'd do a lot better to attract votes.
Good playing though.

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Thanks for the kind and constructive replies.

@Slidewinder:
I will take your point into consideration. For your information this was not a composed solo / melody, it was a first take captured on cam, no overdubs, because I wanted to present myself just the way you see me playing live with my band.

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

ok guys thats not realy fair the point is that he is only not in time and dosen`t let the singel note the space it needs !!!  i thought that he has the same problem than all people and that calls  stage fright yikes cool
you are a great player Jimi if i hadeyour abilities i would be satisfied tongue
a drum machine woud make that good in short time
it would be cool if others here who claim to call them selfs players post a youtube vid too
im a very poor player and my plumber Fingers are not the best equipment to play a guitar but i do and it turns out in musik if you belive or not ...lol
ok so far i like that tread and jimi great work

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Jimi I hope you didn't take my comment as a shot because it was never intended to be anything like that. I was only referring to the competition itself and thought if the you did a tune with a melody line you'd attract more votes. As far as being a player or having talent you've certainly got that.
I could see you were adlibing but non stop soloing without "telling a story" tends to become repetitious and people tend to move on after a couple of minutes or less. You've got the chops no doubt about it and if you played them around a central melody line you'd kick some serious a$$.

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Man you are a killer player with frightening chops!  You get my vote!  You definately have the command over the instrument, and never looked like you were struggling at all.  That is the sign of a truely great guitarist, the ones that "make it look easy".  I was really digging the tones you were getting out of the Strat as well. A++ man keep up the good work!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments.
I felt at no point attacked by anyone here! big_smile

It's very courageous to utter constructive criticism and I am thankful for that.

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Nice playing man!  I didn't even know this contest existed,  might have to give it a go next time it comes around.

Oh yeah... just because I am American doesn't mean I 'll vote for you cause you told me to.  lol  I need to check out the other canidates too...I'll bet there are some other good players.

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

Hi Jimy,

congrats to your clip. Your technique is relly really good. I'm amazed...
But i'm with slidewinder here. The song leads somewhat into the blue.
I also would try to bring the backing track more in the front to underline
the harmonies you play. So as a listener it becomes a bit boring after a while.
I really would try to make a more proper clip especially for a contest like this.

Again, you play very well. But with this clip you stay far behind your obvious
abilities and possibilities. I'm sure with a more proper clip you would be DEFINATELY
under the Top 20. big_smile

You got my vote

Vielen Dank Alex, fühle mich sehr geehrt.

Re: Need support for Guitar Idol competition...

The BEST advice I've got is to tell you to listen to yourself as you play.  Listen to the band and then make sure your doing your part in listening to yourself.  Lots of players know the scales and the tricks but what a lot of players dont do is sit back while they are playing and take in whats coming out.  If you listen to any of the the big names in guitar (blues rock mostly) they all have one thing in common the sound flows from their guitars.  I cant help but agree with SRV when he basically the same thing.  Its help my playing and I'm sure if you do that and be yourself you'll do fine.  Good luck!

Good guitar player joke:

Q...How many guitar players does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A...All of them...one to actually perform the task, the rest to sit back and say, I could have done that faster, smoother and with more feeling...:D

Jimi...make it meaningful to you...not everyone is going to get it or always appreciate it, play what you hear in your head and what you feel in your heart.  People have always told me I should do this or that with my playing, but what I have found lately is that I do it to make me happy, and most of the time the audience gets it,  it's some of the guitar players in the audience that don't...and so be it.  Have fun with it, cause fun is contagious.

Ahh you know there's so much so called "music police" out there and most of the time it's folks that can't even play themselves, standing in the first row analiyzing the playing of this or that player. So I appreciate getting all your feedbacks here and I filter carefully and try to make the best out of the feedback.

Jimi, not only you speak german, you must be here in germany, aren't you? smile
Music police are these guys in front of the stage with crossed arms and analyzing face and waiting
for you to make mistakes... They seem to be everywhere, haha!
Our singer once commented that over the mic and said "Alex give your best unless you wanted to get arrested!" lol

I saw Roy Clark play when I was a kid...When he made mistakes he laughed at himself on stage.  I thought that was so cool, not to take himself that seriously,  I adopted that also.  It also breaks that "I just screwed up" tension.
