Topic: The One That Got Away...

Hey guys do you have any stories about any guitars/amps/pedals that just had "it" and you let it slip away from you?  I am constantly haunted by an early model Clapton signature Stratocaster.  It was hanging up at Sam Ash about 5 years ago for less than $800 used.  It had rusty hardware, scratches and dings all over it, and worn out old strings on it.  I was huge into Clapton at that time and had to try it out.  Judging by the looks I was already put off by it but as soon as I plugged it in it just resonated with fantastic tone.  It had the fattest, smoothest tone of any Stratocaster I ever played.  It played itself as far as action went.  I wish I wasn't a poor high school kid at the time or that one would have come home with me.  Ampwise, the only one I've played that had the tone that didn't go home with me was a white 1962 Bluesbreaker.  At $2800 that was better left for the collectors!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: The One That Got Away...

When I was just getting out of High School I like an idiot traded my beloved Fender Evil Twin for a Vox Valtronix to try to get a smaller easier to use package.

I hated that amp so bad I sold it at a major loss and spent a lot of money on another Evil Twin.  Its not the same as the old one though.  Worst mistake I've ever made musically.

Re: The One That Got Away...

Oh God definately.
I had an original Mesa Boogie MKII B that I sold for a MK IIIC, which I sold for a Boogie 50/50 power amp and studio pre.  I'd love to have the MKII back.

I owned 5 Les Pauls.  2 '78 std's. a tobacco SB and a natural,  A silver burst Custom, a wine custom and a '57 special reissue.  I'd love the tobacco SB Std and the '57 special back.  I cry when I think of that guitar.

I had an early Marshall 50 watt master volume head which was amazing at the time...around 1980.  I don't know the model but man it sounded great back then. I don't know whatever happened to that...it's floating around somewhere.

Live and learn.  I not selling anything ever again.

Re: The One That Got Away...

In 1972 I had a shot at a late 60s LP/SG custom, white with gold hardware, 3 humbuckers, and tremolo, pristine condition, $250. I saw it on a Friday, fell in love on the spot and asked the manager if I could give him $50 to hold if over the weekend until I could borrow the rest from my parents. He agreed. But a touring band (don't reacall who) was in town Saturday and a roadie came by on a routine sweep of area music shops and offered $300. You can guess what happened. When I came by Monday with my $200 the guy just shook his head, said he was sorry, and gave me my $50 back. I went out into my 1968 Fairlane and cried. In fact, I'm misting up as I tell the tale.

Blessings,
Larry
