Topic: Custom by Cougar

Hi.

I've come across a few pictures of Joe playing with a Custom By Cougar amp.  A friend of mine said that Joe loved it and wanted to buy it there and then. Joe any truth to this??  I've heard the Philip Sayce Signature amp and does sound amazing. I'm thinking about this being my first really good amp purchase.  2900 EUROS which is quite a chunk of money but is does sound amazing.  Anyone else come across these amps?? What are your views??  My friend has a Mystic Blue Star amp by Cougar and dare I say he thinks it's better than a DUMBLE!!

Re: Custom by Cougar

Never ceases to amaze me about amps. New ones are always coming out that blow others out of the water. Why can't it be like that for guitars? Maybe that'd take some heat off the vintage market! tongue

Re: Custom by Cougar

Philip's Signature head is a great sounding amp and Philip is very happy with it. Although he uses it in conjuction with other amps at times it's been his main amp for awhile now.
It was re-tubed recently and like all high quality amps the tubes make a difference.

Re: Custom by Cougar

I must admit I hadn't heard of him before I was told about this amp but I really like his playing and sounds.  Have you got the amp yourself or do you know Mr Sayce??

Re: Custom by Cougar

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Custom by Cougar offer one of the only Dumble Steel String Singer clones???  I think Two Rock and Fuchs have made stabs at the SSS circuit but from what I gather the Cougar one is pretty much authentic.  I would love to have a 100 watt SSS clone but they are mega bucks...oh well it's just a matter of time until the other cloners get their paws on the circuit and offer more affordable versions.

Re: Custom by Cougar

Tommy got the circuit right and it's a great sounding amp. I've played but never owned a two rock and have owned a few different Fuchs amps. I think the Cougar amp is a much better rendition of a Dumble although Dumbles come in a number of different configurations based on the player using their particular model.
After Philip got the original head he used it for time and then sent it back for mods based on what he wanted to hear and what he needed the amp to do.
Philip was very happy with the result and Tommy came out with the PS model after that.

mickieblue, I don't have the amp but Philip's a good friend.

Re: Custom by Cougar

Thats cool. I'm going to try my friends one out when he comes back from a tour.  He does have one of the top models thou so i'm really looking forward to seeing how that sounds.  Any other Cougar owners out there??

truely amazing amps!!!

Re: Custom by Cougar

Man the clip sounded terrible but the Cougar somehow still sounded good!  Joe vs. Wes...man it really wasn't even fair.  Especially on a BB King tune. lol That Les Paul tone just spanked that thin Strat tone.  I'd like to see someone come along and re-invent the Stratocaster instead of the legions of SRV clones.  Sad because Wes is a great player but put him and KWS in a room blindfolded you'd be hard pressed to tell who was who.
