Topic: MY FINGERS HURT!!!
I am just learning to play the guitar and my fingers hurt really bad. Any suggestions? I am learning on a kids guitar and am trying to get real one, but I need help with my fingers FAST!!

We all go though it, after about 7 days callouses start to form and the pain goes away (it does honest). One thing I was taught and is a great tip:
Pick an easy cord and strum. Then keep taking pressure of your finger tips while strummming. You will soon find out that you need nowhere near the pressure to make the chord sound true. Make sure your fingers are just behind the frets, other wise more pressure is required.
White spirut will also dry out your finger tips and toughen them up.

so ... no way of getting around it. Being a mom I tried fingernail polish cuz it fixes anything!:) I don't know that my fingers will ever dry out bathing 3 kids every night!:)
It really does goe away, mine were agony for around 2 weeks. Then seemed to clear up over a period of just 2 days.

Just go slow with it and let the callouses form. With my job sometimes I'm gone for long periods and I don't bother taking a guitar with me when I'm flying (too much hassle). So I go a month sometimes without any practice and then I have to start over again...
Another thing - you said it was a kids guitar right? Check the string height over the fingerboard. I'd think anything over 1/8th of an inch is too much but then again I'm not a guitar tech. When I was a kid I had a couple of cheapos (acoustic and electric) and the actions were so high it was like running my fingers over a cheese slicer.
That really discouraged me from playing and I didn't pick it up agian until about 3 years ago when I got a fairly decent guitar.
This is where you'll find out if you want to be a guitar player or not. Man this thread is bringing back some old memories of me learning to play a C chord, G chord, Am chord.......It hurt like hell but I couldn't put it down. The callouses will come and eventually a lighter touch so keep at it.

Me too - first lesson on a 3/4 acoustic/concert guitar, only b-string: |0-0-0---|0-0-0---|0-0-0-0-|0-0-0---||

As you were told here a few times before, it's right. You have to play further, but you should get a "real" fullsize guitar. What string gauge do u use? Do you practise on a concert guitar (nylon strings), a acoustic steel string guitar, or on an electric guitar?

Thanks for your advice........you don't even want to know what I was practicing on. You know the little tiny Discovery first act acoustic guitars. The ones you can buy in the toy section. Yeah my daughter is 4 and it fits her perfectly! I really.... REALLY... wanted to start learning though and that was all I had. My dad just bought me a real guitar though and I can already play four songs!! My fingers felt better the next day after changing guitars. I am practicing about an hour a day, but they still feel better than before.
When I started playing my guitar for lessons, I thought I was pressing on cheese cutters. After Bass strings...well they were. After 3 days I took a day off and noticed that my callouses were extending from the pads of my fingers to the tips.
Then I remembered that I didn't like guitar players, so I quit.
I always found if I pressed really hard on the thinnest strings E / B my calluses would get a bit harder faster... then again after putting my fingers thru that pain it never hurt as much anyhow
Electric guitar strings are a killer when you start and simply evil on a cheap acoustic guitar with a high action. Get a guitar with a low easy action and you will have to use less pressure.Or start on a nylon stringed acoustic.When I first learnt (age 8 ) I used to rub my fingers on the school desk all day to get the fingertips tougned up.
Top Tip - Join the elite, learn the bass, nice 'n comfy on the fingers.
