Thanks for letting me know about Oli Brown. It's nice when you come across a gem in the sand, and then able to watch that gem grow. Very much like watching your own children grow up, yes ?

Yes indeed Brack,
Oli is a very bright gem. I sometimes have to remind myself that he is only 19. I will be following his career very closely that's for sure.

Re: Oli Brown Band

Saw Oli at the Beaverwood last Thursday - what a star.  Despite the PA going down before the performance and some rushing around to provide an alterntive Oli, Fred and Simon were brilliant.

Am going to see them again on 11th at the Zoom Zoom club in Herne Hill, London.  Any other forum members going? - It would be nice to say hi before RAH.

Hi Maggie - I was at the Beaverwood (2nd row of seats near the front) and will probably go to the Herne Hill gig too - I'll look out for you - I am 6'5" with silver hair, like yourself, so just look for the tallest guy in the place and you'll probably find me - I'm often at the Beaverwood and Herne Hill so you may have seen me already, or moved to the side to get a better view!!! lol

Re: Oli Brown Band

Hi Eldo,
We will look out for you on 11th - Lydia and I were sitting by the merchandise next to Oli's mum and dad at Beaverwood.
My hair is  shorter than it in my photo but still white! Not quite the shortest person in the place - I am 5'4".  Oh, and I will be wearing my new Oli Brown Tee shirt!

Re: Oli Brown Band

Well, I'm officially sold!! Having seen a few videos on Youtube, and on the recommendations of one forum member in particular, I purchased Oli's debut album....and I must admit i wasn't completely sold at the time, as decent as it was for a debut CD!! However, I definitely wanted to see him live, based on what I'd seen, and on what I'd heard through word of mouth.

I finally got to see him play last night at the Robin 2, and boy did he blow the roof off the place. Such a talent, with fantastic stage presence, natural charisma and confidence, and such a strong voice. I did have to keep reminding myself of how young he actually was. He's got a really tight trio going, and they were all really in the groove, and enjoying themselves.....and the crowd certainly were!! There was also some humourous banter between Oli and some slightly rowdy, and slightly tipsy Brummies (during Oli's mic-less section of Stone Cold), and the place was really buzzing by the second set.

Also, I have to say I admire Oli for switching from F@#$%r to his signature Vanquish guitar, it really allows him to express himself and distances him from all the "clone" talk and obvious comparisons that always seem to surround such skilled F@#$%r guitar players (and it looks and sounds sweet!! For that I admire him a lot.

Anyway, in terms of personal significance, I would definitely put this gig up there with the first time I saw Joe last year. Had a great time, and I urge anyone and everyone to catch this young trio, they're something to behold!!

Thanks so much for the post and I'll take a look at the album.

Listening to it is far more enjoyable! smile

You know, I just found this post and I have to agree with you Tripsy, "listening" to it is far better than "looking" at the album! wink

You know what amazes me? Everyone is talking about young Oli and his Band, but no one is posting their comments on Amazon.com. Check this out; there's only two comments and one of them is the one I just added. Come on gang, speak out! See here:

Hey Paul – I was at the Robin 2 too lol last night – and you’ve taken the words right out of my mouth (or maybe from a review I posted elsewhere earlier today?? wink ). What a terrific gig!
I, like you recognised  “Open Road” as a good blues debut album, but never found it the easiest to listen to. Based on last night’s superb gig, I would say the album is perhaps lacking a little on the production side, as the live versions of the songs had so much more energy about them. Truly infectious stuff! He even took a Gangsta Rap song and turned it into the blues. (Sorry the name of the song escapes me – and I’m far too old for all that nonsense anyway)
Oli is a great entertainer.  Confidence, stage presence, looks, a great voice, oh, and a seemingly natural ability with the guitar – he has the lot. His ability to command his (sometimes rowdy) audience with humour and dignity (especially on the occasion they made him “crack”) was a delight to see in one so young.
Oli and the guys have certainly made huge leaps forward since I saw them supporting Aynsley Lister in December 07. With his youthfulness and (i’m told) good looks, he has the image and ability that given the right exposure could take the blues into the limelight here and capture the imagination of a younger audience.

Lookout music lovers - the Oli Brown Band has arrived!

Paul – just a couple of things I would disagree on – Oli’s Vanquish guitar is a stunner, and the P90’s give him a little more flexibility , yes. But hey – a Fender’s a Fender (or is there something wrong with your keyboard). I don’t go for all that “Clone” nonsense – which an artist’s “sound” rather than what he plays, tends to sometimes attract. It’s all about taking influences and inspiration from ones peers and contemporaries, and you’d struggle to find a guitarist anywhere that hasn’t done that.
And next time you go to the Robin be careful – people from the Black Country object strongly to being called “Brummies”. It’s a bit like calling someone from Newcastle –u- Lyme a “Stokie”, and I’m sure you’ll know about that. lol

Next stop Amazon

My apologies for my sweeping generalization there....wouldn't want to offend!! tongue

As far as his guitar is concerned, a Fender is a Fender like you said, and I have nothing against them whatsoever, and I'd love a go on one myself. I know it's about how the guitar is played rather than what make it is, but from my personal experience of listening to guitarists, other guitars appear more versatile, and allow more personal expression, without the risk of sounding so much like one's influences and peers which isnt a bad thing by any means, for the most part...but it's nice to hear and see something a bit different.

Just my opinion, i don't want to get into the whole Gibson / Fender debate, would love a real one of each...and some talent to play at least one!!!

Hi Paul - don't worry - you wouldn't be offending me - I'm a Stafford boy - smack bang between the Black country and the Potteries wink . Here endeth todays geography lesson.

With regard to guitars and "clones" - it's a subject I could bang on about for ever, but believe me, a Strat can be a very versatile instrument. I'll just leave you one example - would you say that Stevie sounds much like Eric (Johnson or Clapton)? Very diverse styles, tones, and overall sounds there wouldn't you say? Same guitar.
Oli's guitar did get the knowledgable Robin crowd in a stir last night though - I heard quite a few asking what it was. And it did sound great.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed Oli last night,  he's gonna be a big star one day I'm sure. Shame we never got to meet up, but I'm sure we will before long. I did get to have a chat with Martin and his son Alex though. Always good to meet a fellow JB fan - we're a privileged bunch.

Re: Oli Brown Band

Well guys I cannot add anything to your reviews.  As Paul mentioned I think the roof suffered some damage, the whole night was a blinder.  His interaction with the crowd was spot on. Speaking with him afterwards he did mentioned how much he enjoyed the gig and audience.
It was great to meet Paul and Ian first the forum members we have managed to meet:) , I am sure we will meet again.
We arrived early and entered the hall first, as we headed for the stage Graham, Oli's dad and manager greeted us with 'you must me Martin and Alex, Tripsy said you would be coming'.  We were chatting and he introduced me to Virgils dad and manager Hendry McMahon and we all had a good chat.  Virgil and Ollie both came over, both lovely lads and extremely polite. Dam they looked so young (which they are). Alex is a shy person but he loved the attention and the fact that the bands, managers and family members were wanting to talk with him. It made Alex feel quite special:)
As for the Vanquish, I am no guitar expert but it sounded and look lovely. Someone was there from Vanquish, I presume it was Adrian who builds them.

Re: Oli Brown Band

Hey you guys, I'm so glad you all enjoyed yourselves. Sounds like Oli, Fred and Simon played another blinder!
I've been listening to Open Road at work this evening and agree that the live experience does have more energy and excitement. Oli is very charismatic and his singing gets better and better.
Nice to hear that Oli and Graham were their usual charming selves too.
Icon, that rap song is called No Diggity which was done by a group called BLACKstreet. Here it is from the Scarborough gig

Wish I'd been there, can't wait for the next gig smile
