Topic: Just look around....

The world may be "going to the dogs" as George indicated in the other thread, but I still think there is much beauty and some very funny things to laugh at in the world. All you have to do is look around you. For example; yesterday I'm standing at the gas station filling up the tank on what we consider in Wisconsin to be a very nice warm day which was 40 degrees F (4.44 C). As I stood there enjoying the fresh air, up pulls a small BMW sport coupe with a very young man behind the wheel. Now mind you, this I'm sure is one of the lower end models of BMW, if there is such a thing. In the passenger side seat is his buddy who also is very young looking.

Out steps the driver and that's when I could barely contain myself. Yes, he couldn't have been more than 17 years old and for some reason, I just knew by his looks that this was not mommy's or daddy's car he was driving, it was his own BMW. Yes like other towns, there are some wealthy families in "Me No Money" Falls too. However, what really cracked me up was what this young man was wearing. He only had a white, short sleeved T-shirt (undershirt) covering his upper body and jogging pants covering his lower body. However you see, the jogging pants weren't really "covering" his lower body. Making his GQ fashion statement of the year, his jogging pants waist was gathered below his butt, exposing for all to see the fashionable underwear he was wearing. Now mind you this was not a mistake, he really thought he looked "cool" in this get up. I had to turn my back so as not to embarrass the young man with my near hysterical laughter. As one of my favorite comedians Billy Connolly once said, "Times may change, but Standards must remain!" Pull up those trousies young man!! lol

So I say, there's still plenty out there to laugh about; you just need to take the time and look. smile

Re: Just look around....

Now Bluesman, don't get me started. Isn't it about the daftest fashion you've ever seen? well for guys anyway. It's a bit like that song "The Emperor's New Clothes". Someone has made one of the best marketing gags of all time and convinced young men thats it cool to have your waistband around your knees with your underwear on show. I must say watching them waddle around like penguins is hilarious.

From April to October I get groups of them coming with schools to climb our course wearing these ridiculous clothes. As if you can expect to wear a safety harness properly with such an outfit. I make no apology, but once we are finished kitting them out they get ripped to shreds mercilessly by the other kids as they look pretty dumb.

That said, I did see some photos of myself and some mates at a friends wedding circa 1978 a couple of months back. Oh dear. Were 3 piece crushed velvet suits and kipper ties ever really fashionable? and those stack heel shoes? It was around this time my mother quietly informed me she would start ignoring me in public if I didn't get my hair cut.

I guess we've all been there at some time. Ridiculous and impratical as it looks now I suppose my time had the same sartorial disasters. I didn't have the BeeEm though, although I did think my Mk3 Ford Cortina 2000E (Arizona Gold with brown vinyl roof - yeeeeuuuck) was the dogs doodah (at the time).

I don't envy them, but I wish I was their age again with all that I now know. Oh yes, that would be fun!

Hans/Mike (sorry, I'm not sure of your exact name) smile

Yes, fashion statements seem to run the course of time, although I'm not sure I'll ever think the young man I saw at the filling station is a snappy dresser.

It apepars no one else has seen anything funny lately. Gosh, I hope that's not an indication of how bad the world has gotten.

Anyway, in addition to laughter, I mentioned that this world is full of beauty and I just happened to observe something first hand and took some pictures this past Sunday while I was working in my yard. I was cutting down some rather large bushes when I heard a squeal of a hawk. However, it wasn't just one hawk, it was three. For some reason two juvenile hawks were standing in the road when my old friend from the bird bath (I think some might remember that story) showed up to chase them out of the road. Because of this bird's size, I assume it was either mom or dad to the two juveniles.

Instead of flying away, the adult hawk then took up a postion standing in the road. You should have seen the look on a woman bicyclist's face who road toward and then around this bird! Finally, my friend decided it was time to escape to the safety of a neighbor's tree. That's when I went inside, grabbed my camera and took these pictures:

I stood across the street and snapped a few so as not to disturb him/her. Like I said, there's still lots of beauty in this world too. All that you have to do to see it is just look around.......

Re: Just look around....

Roy,

Thanks for the story and pictures.  I'm fascinated by birds of prey.  I've got more than a few birdfeeders in my backyard that attract more than the songbirds.  I also visit Alton, Illinois (near St. Louis) every winter to see the second largest Bald Eagle population in the U.S.  Three great rivers meet in the area (Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers) and the terrain also includes high bluffs that's the perfect habitat for eagles.
I'd like to say I always enjoy your posts and a thread like this is a good tonic for these doom and gloom times.

Re: Just look around....

My son is 28 now, and kids were starting to wear their pants like that when he was in high school....I've always been able to talk straight with my kids....I flat told him  "No earings, tattoos, and baggy pants, dont even test me!"....he comes back with "look who's talking, Mr Hippy, tyedyed no taste shirts and loud rock and roll music blasting out the car like a 16 year old"...I told him "you got it right boy, just do as I say, and thats that"....he mumbled as he walked away...."hypocrite"....yep, he was right there too smile

Re: Just look around....

Shred,

Can you hear my laughter?  I bet that little scenario is played out in every home worldwide.  I've learned to bite my tongue a bit to escape the hypocrisy coming out me big mouth.  Thanks for the hoot!

Re: Just look around....

Thank you Scott and you're welcome!

I know the same feeling you have about Bald Eagles. Each year we go up to the border between northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. We stay at a resort called Bent's Camp that lies on the Cisco Chain of Lakes. A friend of mine has a home on one of the lakes in this particular chain and when he first decribed the chain and recommended the resort, he told me the locals called the Bald Eagles there "Pigeons" because of their large number. I didn't believe him until after the first year that we were there.

Each year now we see many Bald Eagles flying and visit their nesting sights quite often. One time when I was out in a boat alone, a Bald Eagle came flying about 15 feet right over me, swooped down to the water and grabbed a fish in his talons. He flew very low over the lake and stopped off at a nearby island where he enjoyed his catch on a fallen birch tree. A fantastic site to say the least. There have also been many times that my daughter and I have been out fishing together and have had one perch on a tree above where we are fishing. Sites and moments like those will be with me for the rest of my life, as I'm sure your sightings will too. smile
