Topic: Johny Winter?

As we came out of the fantastic Sardinas gig last night a poster caught my attention 'Johny Winter' headlining and Joanne Shaw Taylor as support. Jo is worth the entrance fee on her own:)
Should be a great night.. Anyone seen Johny live?

Re: Johny Winter?

Hey Martin - I've not seen him live but if thats the gig at the Robin 2 I'll probably be there - especially as JST is support (Thanks for the tip off)
I'm hoping to get to the Oli Brown gig there on 26th March - are you going to that one? - it would be good to meet up if you are.

Re: Johny Winter?

We were about to see him some years ago when we were told half an hour before the show that Johnny Winter and his band (and  some money, as the papers were saying later) have disappeared  the night before. Then two years ago we saw him really. He was very very fragile, nearly unable to stand and to walk. His guitar playing was pretty good, but it was killed by an insensitive drummer.
Meanwhile it´s said that he is in better shape these days.

Re: Johny Winter?

Yes I noticed Winter's dates. It is not the same support act for each date however. The York date on 22nd May shows Ian Siegal as the support act. If I lived near there, I would be at that gig in a shot.

Re: Johny Winter?

Johnny was the victim of a greedy manager, and in the last couple of years, has started to gain strength again. His singing has continued to improve, and his guitar playing is getting to where it used to be. I saw him about a year and a half ago and he was really good. Not 1970s good, but a very good show.

Re: Johny Winter?

Saw Johnny when he was on top of his game the day he recorded Captured Live. He'll be playing Aug. 9 @ the Fire On The Mountain Festival in Sonora, Ca. w/ Coco Montoya, Shane Dwight & others. Unfortunately Joe isn't headlining this one this year.

Re: Johny Winter?

We saw Johnny Winter at the Robin a couple of years ago. I wanted to see him because he is such an icon and I love his stuff from the seventies. When people talk about the blues greats he hardly ever gets a mention.  He did seem quite frail and had to be helped onto the stage. Nevertheless I really enjoyed the show.

I'd go if I were you Martin especially with JST supporting. I'd go myself if I could afford it sad

Tripsy smile

Re: Johny Winter?

Has anyone seen Johnny lately.  We have tickets to see him in February.  He is coming to our small town and playing a Little venue that holds around 500 to 600 folks.   Excited to see his slide work.   We saw Sugar Blue at the same venue about a year ago.  I have been listening to his most recent albums and love the guitar but his voice is a little sketcy

I saw him last Spring. He's very frail and a shadow of what he was but still can bring it for a bit. Enjoy the show and a chance to see a legend.

Re: Johny Winter?

I saw JW in April this year. As Rick said, he was very frail but that didn't stop him playing an excellent set. Certainly worth seeing.

Re: Johny Winter?

A true legend......saw him back in the 70's, 80's, 90's and whenever he comes around.....He can still play....kick A** band too.

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Johny Winter?

Thanks for the info.   It will be worth it just to have the chance to see him play guitar.  Hoping he will sign something for me as well.

Yes that would be a gig I wouldn't let out ... but also a little too far away for me.
Still under the impression of my concert of Ian Siegal's Electric Band (aka the Rhythm Chiefs). They were fantastic lol

Great it works

Re: Johny Winter?

Show was last night and he slayed it. Sound was not great on his vocals but the sound for guitar just stellar.  he may be old but he is the master of the slide

Re: Johny Winter?

I saw him in 2010 & 2012 at the Granada in Dallas. He was great both times!! Also, check out the guitarists who opened for him at those shows. Mike Zito, Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat, and Damon Fowler.
