Topic: Unsung heroes...one song each

These guys are legendary names...but I gave them the unsung label because they haven't reached the stardom of Clapton, BB King or Hendrix. (I know Rory came close, but there's still a lot of people that don't know of him.... same with Bloomfield).

So here is what I ask... give one song to describe them at their best. I must admit I know OF these names, and just need a gateway song to open up the floodgates. Feel free to copy/paste.

James Cotton
Ry Cooder
Michael Bloomfield
Rory Gallagher
Robin Trower
Frank Marino
Danny Gatton

Ry Cooder.
I like him best together with other artists, such as:
the "Indian Cooder": Ganges Delta Blues with V.M.Bhatt (A Meeting by the river),
the "African Cooder": Amandrai with Ali Farka Toure (Talking Timbuktu)
or with John Lee Hooker: This is hip Mr. Lucky) or Crawling King Snake (On Stage)
or him alone playing Paris,Texas (Soundtrack).

For Ry Cooder..."Little Sister" from "Bop Til You Drop"...it was the FIRST digitally recorded record and it's still my favorite. I'll think about the others.    Cathy

Re: Unsung heroes...one song each

Robin Trower: "Bridge of Sighs" and "Day of the Eagle"
Old songs that still hold up today as killer bluesy rock songs. He's still touring too, and still plays great. I've never seen him, but I understand he's very loud.

Joe actually credits Robin Trower for getting him looking at Marshalls. Joe opened up for him at one time when he was still using Fender amps, and was impressed by Robin's Marshalls.

Bridge Of Sighs is without doubt the best album by Robin Trower. The title track is brilliant. In fact the album is one of my all time favourites.
Oh, and yes he does play VERY LOUD!!

I'm kind of suprised to see Cottons name on this list. Just odd to have a harp player mixed in with all these guitarists.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Unsung heroes...one song each

for marino id say off the reallive album

prelude to/stories of a hero.
it is a one of a kind style of guitar and really beautiful drawn out epic playing.

then for trower my favorite and a good intro song to him is 20th century blues.  too rolling stoned is also a badass riff.  like everyone is saying bridge of sighs is a must have album if you are into this type of music.

and I think roy buchanan needs to be added to the list

Walter Trout - he's virtually the Godfather of modern blues rock. There must be few who work as hard as Walter!

Re: Unsung heroes...one song each

This guy was know as a rock guitar god of sorts back in the late 70's and early 80's while touring with TRIUMPH, but Rik Emmett is one of the most eclectic guitarists that I know.  He has a trio of CD's that cover a wide variety of guitar styles.  But he has a nice collection of blues tunes on his Raw Quartet cd.  One song that is underrated from Rik and I feel one of the tunes I'd love to see Joe coveris Too Little Too Late.  Another song from Rik that is truely a masterpiece is Out of the Blue.  It has what Rik describes as his best guitar playing.

I think if you truely love guitar no matter what style, check out Rik's solo material....you won't be disappointed.

Re: Unsung heroes...one song each

I was thinking of another guy. Miller Anderson. He played on Keef Hartley's Halfbreed, a fantastic album!!! The one song would be "Born to Die" from that CD, just a superb track. Matter of fact Joe, if you are ever looking for another slow blues to cover, that one is ace......
