Topic: Chicago Bulls Nation in mourning
I shed a tear yesterday when I learned of Norm Van Lier's death.
I grew up watching Norm and Jerry Sloan kick the crap out of opposing guard tandems.
Norm was one of those throwback guys that I love. He played his heart out every time he stepped on the court.
He asked no quarter and he gave none. He was as likely to take a charge from Wilt Chamberlain as he was a smaller player...he backed down from nobody. Other fans and opposing players HATED playing the Bulls, because they knew that with Van Lier and Sloan, they were in for a long night.
Johnny "Red" Kerr was as much the face of the franchise as Michael Jordan. In fact, he was with them for something like 54 years. He was their first coach, to this day the only first year coach to get his team into the playoffs (granted, there were only like 4 teams in the league at that time). Johnny then was on the broadcast side until this year, when he could no longer handle broadcasting duties due to health problems (prostate cancer). The Bulls held a tribute to Johnny a few weeks ago and you could tell how much he was loved, because former players and coaches came to pay tribute.
Both these guys bled "Bulls Red". They will be missed.
