Indeed a good article. I've always respected Buckingham but will never forgive him or Stevie Nicks for ruining the real Fleetwood Mac...oh the Peter Green days.
Actually the Mac had many changes before Buckingham Nicks. They rescued us from Bob Welch and Bob Weston. Peter Green took himself out of the game long before Buckingham Nicks went mainstream and took Fleetwood and McVie with them. Granted Christine had a lot to do with it as well. There are those that blame her for the demise of the original.
Agree with Jim, that Green left of his own accord. His is maybe the greatest "what might have been" story in rock history. Likewise, Spencer left Fleetwood Mac through his own choice and Kirwan through his own unacceptable behaviour. There may be a case for suggesting Fleetwood and McVie could have done more to help their troubled band mates at the time but Buckingham and Nicks cannot be blamed for that as they joined several years later. There was also Bob Weston, fired for having an affair with Fleetwood’s wife. In respect of Buckingham, I’ve preferred his solo work to what he did with Fleetwood Mac.
You should also take into account what they all have accomplished on their own, before and after......The Mac was a revolving door of great musicians.
I've always admired Lindsey Buckingham throughout his career - before, during and after Fleetwood Mac. His music didn't tarnish the band's reputation, it just took it in a different direction. Regarding Bob Welch, didn't he write "Oh Well"?

I actually liked Bob Welch who was the first American to join the band. He wrote Sentimental Lady, and Hypnotized, which he had a hit with on a solo album upon his departure from the Mac. It was also included on Bare Trees. Peter Green wrote Black Magic Woman, and Oh Well.
Thanks Jim for the info. Last fall I did a search for "Oh Well Part 2" on iTunes and only found Welch's version. Following the likes of Peter Green would be intimidating, but I thought Bob was more than a capable guitarist.
